Taking the Urban out of Urban Fantasy

Thanks so much to Between Dreams and Reality for having me as a guest today. This is one of my favorite blogs!

The Shaede Assassin series takes place in Seattle. A city with a population of roughly 625,000 people. The streets are crowded, the buildings are tall, and everything is just…congested. Secrets are easy to keep and supernatural creatures can hide their true natures in the crowd. The city doesn’t slow down. A steady pace means non-stop action. Or at least, the possibility for non-stop action.

In my new Sentry of Evil series, I decided to leave the urban setting behind in favor of a small-town atmosphere. It’s tougher to write a small community as opposed to a vast city because the reader is allowed the opportunity to really scrutinize the smaller setting, and the devil is in the details. Whereas a character can easily blend in an urban area and pass the man on the street with nothing more than a glance, in a smaller community, each and every character interacts in some way. Everyone knows everyone and so, everyone pays closer attention to what his neighbor is doing.

One of the great things about urban fantasy is all the trouble supernatural creatures are capable of stirring up. I typically write about the havoc being wreaked on the large city scale, but I think it’s safe to say that a demon could cause just as much trouble in New York City, as he could in a tiny Montana or Wyoming town.

With the Shaede Assassin series, it made sense for Darian to live in a big city. Since she worked for decades as an assassin, she needed to live somewhere that she’d be able to work. I doubt she would have stayed under the radar single-handedly taking out an entire town’s population as the residents hired her to handle their petty disputes. Jacquelyn, the MC in Vengeance Borne, works in a coffee shop. You can find a coffee shop in any town, anywhere, big or small. But just because I chose for her to live in a small town didn’t mean I could be lazy with the world building, either. I had to provide a backstory for Jacquelyn, and part of that backstory had to justify the hows and whys of her living in a small town. In this instance, I decided to use ley lines, invisible magical highways, to justify the abnormal supernatural presence in her town. The ley lines bring the baddies her way, and it gives us a reason for Jacquelyn to be transplanted somewhere with a population of less than five-thousand people as opposed to a bigger city such as Seattle. Like I said, the devil is in the details. Give the supernatural baddies a reason to be there, and they’ll show up. Even in Small Town, USA.

What do you think defines an urban fantasy? Is it the actual city setting, or does “urban” simply define a time period or lifestyle? When does a fantasy no longer become urban? And what then? Does it slip into the category of contemporary fantasy? Is there such a thing? Do we even need the classification?

La série Shaede Assassin prend place à Seattle. Une ville d’une population de 625 000 personnes.  Les rues sont surpeuplées, les bâtiments sont hauts, et tout est juste… encombré. Les secrets sont faciles à garder et les créatures surnaturelles peuvent cacher leurs natures dans la foule. La série ne ralentit pas. Un rythme soutenu signifie une action non-stop. Ou au moins, la possibilité d’action non-stop.

Dans ma nouvelle série Sentry of Evil, j’ai décidé de laisser le côté pour l’atmosphère d’une petite ville. C’est difficile d’écrire sur une petite communauté à l’inverse d’une vaste ville comme le lecteur a l’opportunité de vraiment les petits détails, et les démons sont dans les détails. Alors qu’un personnage peut facilement dans une zone urbaine et passer devant un homme sans la rue sans même lui lancer un regard, dans une plus petite communauté, chaque personnage interagit avec une autre d’une manière ou d’une autre. Tout le monde connait tout le monde, tous font attention à ce que sont voisin fait.

L’une des meilleurs choses au sujet de l’urban fantasy sont les problèmes que les créatures surnaturelles sont capables de créer. J’écris habituellement sur les ravages semés à l’échelle d’une ville, mais je pense qu’il est sûr de dire qu’un démon peut causer autant de problèmes à New-York qu’au Montana ou au Wyoming.

Avec la série Shaede Assassin, c’était sensé pour Darian de vivre dans une grande ville. Alors qu’elle travaille depuis des années en tant qu’assassin, elle avait besoin de vivre quelque part où elle était capable de travailler. Je me doute qu’elle serait restée sous le radar en s’occupant de toute la population alors que les résidents l’ont engagé pour s’occuper de leurs petites disputes. Jacqueline, la MIC dans Vengeance Borne, travaille dans un café. Vous pouvez trouver un café dans toutes villes, n’importe où, petites ou grandes. Mais comme j’ai choisi qu’elle vive dans une petite ville mais cela ne veut pas dire que je serais paresseuse sur la construction du monde. Je devais donner une histoire à Jacquelyn, et une partie devait justifier le comment et le pourquoi de sa vie dans une petite ville. Pour cela, j’ai décidé d’utiliser les lignes telluriques, des routes magiques invisibles, pour justifier la présence surnaturelle dans la ville. Les lignes telluriques ramènent les méchants et cela donne une raison à Jacquelyn d’être mutée quelque part avec une population de moins de cinq mille personnes à l’opposé d’une plus grande ville comme Seattle. Comme je le disais, les démons sont dans les détails. Donner des raisons pour que les vilains surnaturels soient là, et ils vont arriver. Même dans Petite Ville, USA.

Que définit l’urban fantasy pour vous ? Est-ce une ville actuelle, ou « urban » définit-il simplement une période ou un mode de vie ? Quand la fantasy devient-elle différente de l’urban ? Et puis ensuite ? Cela change-t-il de categories de fantasy contemporaine ? Cela existe-t-il ? Avons-nous besoin d’un classement ?

Review: You all know that I love Amanda Bonilla right? No? So I’ll tell you, it’s a wonderful writer and I’m totally in love with her Shaede Assassin series. But you’ll tell me that it’s not this series here but we discover a new whole story. Yes, yes you heard right, a brand new series: Sentry of Evil. Then of course, the characters and the story are completely different but it was really great to discover another book of the author.

Jax is a young woman who works for Sentry. She is a killer who hunts at night to protect the population of McCall. But she is not alone in this adventure and she is accompanied by a bearer who is supposed to help her to carry her emotions when she needs it, find the tracks while sounding people or even healing her when she needs to be. But now, everything would be better if our young heroine had not broken up with her friend and colleague. She can not know if what she feels is hers or if Finn influences her to make her believe what he wants. To understand all this, she needs time away from him and yet it is complicated when the man is very jealous. But fate does not end there, and here comes in the city: Micah, the bearer who does not seem to know what he is and who is irresistibly drawn to Jax, and vice versa. They will also quickly have to team up together when a wave of terrible murders comes to town, leaving them full of questions. But in addition to this, we must not forget that Micah is a novice on this new life and he will have to learn what to do on the job.

I loved Jax. She tries to live while avoiding the easy solution continuously available to her. Of course she hurts and she blames herself for many facts, but she remains determined to control her emotions and not let someone else wear them. Emotions can define a person and she is determined to be what she really is even if it’s difficult sometimes. Yet it is not easy for Finn to accept that, as he wants to live with her, and never quit her, to the point that he tries to handle her feelings so she can understand his own. I must say it is a bit difficult to decide about this character. It is very interesting to discover his feelings and it breaks our heart when we see how difficult it is for him. He does not understand that Jax needs time, and so do him. But I confess that I am very curious to read more about him in the next book now that we know a bit of him throughout the story. And what about Micah? This character is also very interesting to discover and I confess that I can not wait to see him again. He does not hesitate to embark on a world he does not know, far more dangerous than what he has seen so far, all to help and save Jax. This is a lovely man and full of courage just waiting to share something with our heroine. I enjoyed him, it is quite difficult to create a character strong like him and at the same time who shows such sweetness and tenderness in his feelings and his behavior. But of course, it is the same for him, I’m very curious to learn more about him.

This novel introduces us many things. Several colorful characters, an intriguing world and a mysterious organization. Amanda Bonilla managed to win a new challenge in this great novel and I recommend it if you’re a fan of urban fantasy. It’s a nice discovery and I am more than curious to read more now.

Pour cela, elle doit comprendre comment travailler avec son ex – oh, et ​​il y a un bel inconnu en ville qui a désespérément besoin d’une certaine éducation…

Avis : Vous savez tous que j’adore Amanda Bonilla ? Non ! Alors je vais vous dire, c’est une auteure extraordinaire et je suis totalement amoureuse de sa série Shaede Assassin. Mais vous me direz que cela n’a pas de rapport ici comme nous découvrons une toute nouvelle série. Oui, oui vous avez bien entendu, une toute nouvelle série : Sentry of Evil. Alors bien sûr, les personnages et l’histoire sont complètement différents mais c’était un régal de découvrir un autre livre de l’auteure.

Jax est une jeune femme qui travaille pour Sentry, c’est une tueuse qui chasse la nuit pour protéger la population de McCall. Mais elle n’est pas seule dans cette aventure et elle est accompagnée d’un empathe qui est censé l’aider à porter ses émotions quand elle en a besoin, trouver les pistes en sondant les gens ou même la guérissant quand besoin en est. Mais voilà, tout se passerait mieux si notre jeune héroïne ne venait pas de rompre avec son ami et collègue. Elle n’arrive pas à savoir si ce qu’elle ressent vient bien d’elle ou si Finn l’influence au point de lui faire croire ce qu’il veut. Pour comprendre tout cela, elle a besoin de temps loin de lui et pourtant c’est compliqué quand l’homme est quelqu’un de très jaloux. Mais le destin n’en a pas fini là, et voilà qu’arrive en ville Micah, cet empathe qui ne semble pas savoir ce qu’il est et qui est irrésistiblement attiré par Jax, et inversement. Ils vont d’ailleurs très vite faire équipe ensemble quand une vague de meurtres effroyables arrivent en ville, les laissant pleins d’interrogations. Mais en plus de cela, il ne faut pas oublier que Micah est un novice par rapport à cette nouvelle vie qui s’ouvre à lui et qu’il va devoir apprendre sur le tas.

J’ai beaucoup aimé Jax. Elle essaie de vivre tout en évitant la solution de facilitée qui lui est proposée continuellement. Bien sûr qu’elle souffre ou qu’elle culpabilise pour de nombreux faits, mais elle reste déterminée à maîtriser ses émotions et à ne pas laisser quelqu’un d’autre les porter pour elle. Les émotions font d’une personne ce qu’elle est et elle est bien décidée à être celle qu’elle est réellement. Pourtant ce n’est vraiment pas facile avec Finn qui veut vivre avec elle, et ne jamais la quitter, au point de manipuler ses sentiments pour qu’elle le comprenne. Je dois dire que c’est un peu difficile de statuer sur ce personnage. Il est très intéressant à découvrir et ses sentiments nous brisent le cœur quand on voit le mal que cela lui fait. Il n’arrive pas à comprendre que Jax a besoin de temps, tellement lui a besoin d’elle. Mais j’avoue que je suis très curieuse de pouvoir en lire plus sur lui dans le prochain roman maintenant qu’il nous a été introduit un peu tout au long de l’histoire. Et qu’en est-il de Micah ? Ce personnage est aussi très intéressant à découvrir et j’avoue que j’ai vraiment hâte de le revoir. Il n’hésite pas à se lancer dans un monde qu’il ne connait pas, bien plus dangereux que ce qu’il ait pu voir jusque-là, tout cela pour sauver et aider Jax. C’est un homme adorable et plein de courage qui n’attend que de pouvoir partager quelque chose avec notre héroïne. Je l’ai beaucoup apprécié, c’est assez difficile de créer un personnage qui soit fort et qui en même temps montre une telle douceur et sensibilité dans ses sentiments et sa manière d’agir. Mais bien sûr, il en va de même pour lui, je suis très curieuse d’en apprendre plus à son sujet.

Ce roman nous introduit de nombreux éléments. Plusieurs personnages hauts en couleur, un monde intriguant et une organisation des plus mystérieuses. Amanda Bonilla a réussi son challenge dans ce nouveau roman que j’ai beaucoup apprécié et je vous le conseille si vous êtes fan d’urban fantasy. C’est une jolie découverte et je suis plus que curieuse d’en lire plus maintenant.

Toute Californienne digne de ce nom sait tenir sur une planche de surf. Sauf moi, Allison Robbins ! Le seul truc sur lequel j’ose tester mon équilibre, ce sont mes stilettos. Normal : mon trip c’est plutôt réunions à rallonge et pause café express. Je ne vous raconte pas le stress ! Jusqu’au jour où j’ai eu une crise d’angoisse en plein milieu d’une présentation. Résultat : mon boss m’a mise au repos forcé et mon médecin m’a prescrit des séances de surf. Rien de tel pour se détendre, a-t-il assuré. Se détendre ? Facile à dire quand le moniteur est un grand blond aux yeux verts et au physique de demi-dieu ! Sean ? c’est le prénom du demi-dieu  a beau être ultra zen, il met en surchauffe tous mes capteurs sensoriels. Pas besoin de vous faire un dessin : je suis amoureuse. A votre avis, est-ce que la reine des plannings serrés et des pronostics de résultats, bref une fille comme moi, a des chances d’intéresser un mec aussi cool que Sean ? En tout cas, je tente ma chance !

Review: I’m a big fan of the Shaede Assassin series by Amanda Bonilla, so it was only natural that I start this new series.Of course it is very different andit has nothing to do with what I‘ve read from Amanda Bonilla, but this new story is also very enjoyable to read. It must be said that it’s not the same genre here, aswe have the opportunity to read paranormal romance.

We discover Cait, an explosive and dynamic young woman, forced to marry the man who betrayedher a few years ago. She holds a deep grudge thinking only of revenge against the loverwho cheated on her. But once arrived, when she finds Logan, her feelings resurface and so facing her revenge is more complicated than expected. The past also seems to catch them up, revealing the truth they didn’t know.

It really was a nice little storyand I confess that the end of the book I was a little frustrated as I wanted to know more. I think I would have loved to havean entire novel on Cait and Logan. I must say that I really enjoyed this young woman with this fiery temperament and I was curious to see what she woulddo. Of course, I hope I’ll find out more info, but it’s a nice and pretty story. The read is quite fast, featuring a new threat.

I’m curious to see where we will have Amanda Bonilla for us.

 Sexy Shifter Shorts, Book 2

Review: And this is the secondstory about our shapeshifters. I was curious to see who the novel would feature this time and it is with pleasure that we find a character met in the first volume: Andrew. But this is not everything and we meet another characteralready seen before.

Andrew wakes up one morning in a hotel room with no memory of the recent events. Butit will only take a few seconds forthe police to arrive, accusing him of kidnapping a young woman he does not even know. But worse than that, her sister, Erica,is determined to use her nymph powers to make him talk and pay for what he could dare to do. But unfortunately, nothing goes as planned and this meeting will change her beliefs.

It was quite interesting to discover Andrew, he is much calmer than his brother and also quite intriguing. I confess that I did not expect to meet a nymphin this book and I was immediately curious by her abilities and powers. This book is in continuity with the first one although it starts anotherstory and it is true that like the first one it makes us quitecurious about the purpose of the events. Curious to read Volume 3 now.

Review: We follow this time Erica ‘s sister: Kiera, kidnapped in the previous novel. I confess that I am quite surprised to see that it’s not Andrew who went after the culprit. But then we discover a new character, Carter, hired to discover, and help to destroy the man who puts them all at risk. But it is certain that he did not expect to succumb to the beautiful nymph when he manages to find her and she thinks he is only a hallucination.

I confess that I would have liked to see the characters of previous volumes but it was still nice to find Kiera after everything we heard about her. Carter, however, intrigued me and I was curious to learn more about his past or who he really was. Maybe we’ll know that next time? This is a cute little series we can read very fast, which allows us to discover a little more the Amanda Bonilla’s world.

Quand ils se rendent compteque la passion érotique entreeux est toujours aussi intense, Logan et Cait devront décider si demeurer dans le passé vaut la peine de sacrifier l’avenir…
Avis : Je suis une grande fan de la série Shaede Assassin d’Amanda Bonilla, alors il était tout naturel que je me lance dans cette nouvelle petite histoire. Bien sûr c’est très différent et cela n’a rien à voir avec ce que j’ai pu lire d’Amanda Bonilla, mais cette nouvelle série est aussi très agréable à lire. Il faut dire que le registre même change, comme nous avons l’occasion ici de lire de la romance paranormale.
On découvre Cait, une jeune femme explosive et dynamique, contrainte à se marier à l’homme qui l’a trahie voilà quelques années. Elle en retient une rancœur profonde, ne pensant qu’à se venger de cet amant qui l’a trompée. Mais une fois arrivée, lorsqu’elle retrouve Logan, les sentiments refont surface et faire face à sa vengeance est plus compliqué que prévu.  Le passé semble d’ailleurs les rattraper, leur révélant la vérité qu’ils n’ont pas pu voir auparavant.
C’était vraiment une jolie petite histoire et j’avoue qu’en fin de livre j’étais un peu frustrée de ne pas avoir plus. Je crois que j’aurais bien pu suivre un roman entier sur Cait et Logan. Il faut dire que j’ai vraiment beaucoup apprécié cette jeune femme au tempérament de feu et j’étais curieuse de voir ce qu’elle allait pouvoir faire. Bien sûr, j’aurais aimé pouvoir en découvrir plus mais c’est une jolie petite histoire, assez mignonne et je suis contente d’avoir eu l’occasion de découvrir ce premier tome. Tout se lit très vite, profilant même une future menace.
Je suis curieuse de voir où nous mènera Amanda Bonilla par la suite.

Mais quand les étincelles commencent à voler et sa nature de nymphe des boisl’oblige à chercher quelque chose d’autre que la vengeancede l’insupportable Paige Andrew, Erica ne peut pas s’empêcher de se demander si elle va succomber à la tentationsucrée de ce sexy change-forme avant qu’elle élucide le mystère de la disparition de sa sœur…
Avis : Et voilà la seconde petite histoire au sujet de nos lions changes-formes. J’étais curieuse de voir qui le roman mettrait en scène cette fois et c’est avec plaisir que l’on retrouve un personnage que l’on a croisé dans le premier tome, Andrew. Mais ce n’est pas tout et nous rencontrerons aussi un autre personnage vu auparavant.
Andrew se réveille un matin dans une chambre d’hôtel sans aucun souvenir des derniers événements. Mais il ne faudra que quelques secondes pour que la police ne débarque, l’accusant d’avoir kidnappé une jeune femme dont il ne connait même pas l’existence. Mais pire que ça, sa sœur, Erica, est bien décidée à user de ses pouvoirs de nymphe pour le faire parler et à se venger pour ce qu’il aurait pu oser faire. Mais malheureusement rien ne se passe comme prévu et cette rencontre va bouleverser ses croyances.
  
C’était assez intéressant de suivre Andrew, il est beaucoup plus posé que son frère et aussi assez intriguant. J’avoue que je ne m’attendais pas à rencontrer une nymphe dans ce livre et j’ai tout de suite été curieuse par ses aptitudes et pouvoirs. Nous pourrons d’ailleurs en apprendre plus sur tout cela assez vite. Ce livre reste en continuité avec le premier bien qu’il amorce encore une fois une autre intrigue et c’est vrai que l’amorce rend assez curieux par rapport à la finalité des événements. Curieuse de pouvoir lire le tome 3 à présent.

Après la perte de sa compagne il y a près d’un siècle, Carter s’est résigné à ce qu’il connaît le mieux – exceller dans son travail et servir sa meute – solitaire, mais un travail honorable.

Lorsque Carter se présente, Kiera pense que l’homme trop-sexy-pour-être-vrai doit être le fruit de son imagination … tandis que Carter ne peut pas nier les vibrations de son cœur autour de cette femme étrangement magique.

Essayant de sauver leur vie, Carter et Kiera pourraient trouver la miséricorde dont  ils ont si désespérément besoin … s’ils arrivent à rester en vie!

Avis : Nous suivons cette fois-ci Kiera, la sœur d’Erica, kidnappée dans le roman précédent. J’avoue que je suis assez étonnée de voir que ce n’est pas Andrew qui s’est mis à la poursuite du coupable. Mais on découvre donc un nouveau personnage, Carter, engagé afin de découvrir, aider et détruire, l’homme qui les met tous en danger. Mais il est sûr qu’il ne s’attendait pas à succomber pour la jolie nymphe des bois qui quand il arrive dans la caverne où elle est retenue et le prend pour une hallucination.

J’avoue que j’aurais bien aimé revoir les personnages des tomes précédents mais c’était quand même sympa de découvrir Kiera après en avoir tant entendu parler auparavant. Carter m’a cependant intrigué et j’étais assez curieuse d’en apprendre plus sur son passé ou qui il était vraiment. Peut-être le saurons-nous une prochaine fois ? C’est une mignonne petite série très rapide à lire, qui nous permet de découvrir un peu plus d’éléments sur le monde d’Amanda Bonilla.
