Review: I do not know if you know Kristen Callihan, but one thing is for sure, she manages every time to delight me with her novels. Oh yes, this author has an incredible gift and she carries us every time with her stories featuring some new really fascinating characters. Of course, as always, we find many former protagonists and we learn more about the secondary’s. Here, we therefore find Eliza and Adam discovered earlier.

In the previous volume, our young heroine Eliza was released from the strings that Adam had placed on her since she was dead. Her freedom was something she wanted more than anything and we can understand that after all she has endured. Yet it seems that she left behind her a cage to be placed in another one. Mab is hiding many secrets that will completely change the situation concerning the behavior of the young woman and her brother Mallan also has a great role to play in this. It must be said that the two have both their own objectives but it always concerns Adam and Eliza. Our two heroes will then have to team up together to avoid the schemes provided for them. Yet it is very difficult for our young heroine to trust the man who enslaved her. Conversely, Adam is determined to end his curse and it means to connect with Eliza, her soul mate and to show her that they can be much more despite what he did to her, what he made her endure.

I loved the story of this couple. Nothing is easy for them. Eliza does not succumb directly to his attraction, she is quite suspicious, especially after all the events and whatever happens, she tries to stay away from him. Starting the novel, it is very easy to understand the young woman but much less Adam. Still, while getting to know him, knowing his reasons, we assimilate why he did so even though it was not a good idea. Then I must say that our hero does all he can to make amends so she can finally trust him, so she opens herself even if he is in a bad shape.

As I said we also see the appearance of the characters we love like the Archer’s couple or Evernight’s and we even have the chance to catch a glimpse of the person who will be put forward in the following adventures of our characters. In all cases I still had an incredible time once again with this novel. We have a great really compelling plot and we remain fascinated by the characters and their actions.

Peu importe qu’Adam soit diablement irrésistible, Eliza ne pouvait pas supporter l’idée de renoncer à sa liberté pour toujours. Alors elle s’est échappée. Mais elle découvre bientôt qu’elle est traquée par quelqu’un de beaucoup plus dangereux. Le seul homme qui peut l’aider est le seul homme qu’elle a juré de ne jamais revoir. Maintenant la bonté d’Adam est un refuge inattendu, et Eliza constate que certains vœux sont faits pour être brisés…

Avis : Je ne sais pas si vous connaissez Kristen Callihan, mais une chose est sûre, elle parvient à chaque fois à m’enchanter avec ses romans. Oh oui, cette auteure a un don incroyable et elle nous emporte à chaque fois dans ses histoires mettant en scène de nouveaux personnages vraiment fascinants. Bien sûr, comme à chaque fois, nous retrouvons d’anciens protagonistes et nous en apprenons plus sur d’autres restés secondaires jusque-là. Ici, nous retrouvons alors Eliza et Adam découverts précédemment.

Dans le tome précédent, notre jeune héroïne Eliza avait été libérée des chaînes qu’Adam lui avait placées depuis qu’elle était morte. Sa liberté était quelque chose qu’elle convoitait plus que tout et on peut la comprendre après tout ce qu’elle a enduré. Pourtant, il semblerait qu’elle ait laissé une cage derrière elle pour se retrouver au sein d’une nouvelle toute autre. Mab lui cache un grand nombre de secrets qui changeront complètement la donne quant au comportement de la jeune femme et son frère Mallan a aussi un grand rôle à jouer dans cela. Il faut dire que les deux ont tous les deux des objectifs propres mais cela concerne toujours Adam et Eliza. Nos deux héros vont alors devoir faire équipe ensemble pour se soustraire aux schémas prévus pour eux. Pourtant il est très difficile pour notre jeune héroïne de faire confiance à cet homme qui l’a réduite en esclavage. A l’inverse, Adam est bien décidé à mettre fin à sa malédiction et cela signifie créer un lien avec Eliza, son âme sœur et lui démontrer qu’ils peuvent être bien plus malgré ce qu’il lui a fait endurer.

J’ai adoré l’histoire de ce petit couple. Rien n’est facile pour eux. Eliza ne succombe pas directement à son attraction, elle est méfiante, notamment après tous les événements et quoi qu’il se passe, elle essaie de rester à distance. En commençant le roman, il est très facile de comprendre la jeune femme mais beaucoup moins Adam. Pourtant, en apprenant à le connaître, en connaissant ses raisons, on parvient à assimiler pourquoi il a agi de la sorte même si ce n’était pas chose à faire. Puis il faut dire que notre héros fait tout ce qu’il peut pour se faire pardonner, pour qu’elle lui fasse confiance, pour qu’elle s’ouvre à lui-même s’il n’est pas au meilleur de sa forme.

Comme je le disais nous observons aussi l’apparition de personnages que nous adorons comme le couple Archer, ou encore Evernight et nous avons même la chance d’entrapercevoir la personne qui sera mise en avant dans la suite des aventures de nos personnages. Dans tous les cas j’ai passé un moment incroyable encore une fois avec ce roman. On retrouve une intrigue magnifique et vraiment prenante et on reste fasciné par les personnages et leurs actions.

Review: I was excited to discover this new novel by Kristen Callihan. Indeed, I had a great time with each book in the series and it’s always a pleasure to immerse myself in a new Darkest London story. Every time I finish a new volume I remember why I adore this author that much. She has an undeniable talent for making a spicy romance and a plot that takes us in suspense from beginning to end.

So this time we follow a new couple: William Thorne and Holly Evernight. A year ago, under the control of one man, Holly has deprived William of his heart and implanted instead a clock. Since then, William has vowed to kill the young woman and now he decides to act. However this year and this device have changed him, and he became a savage killer that nothing and no one can help or it is in any case what he believed. Indeed, during his attack, he realizes that a gesture from Holly is enough to allow him to regain his senses a bit. He therefore decides to make a pact with her, he will help her find the person who wants her dead and will protect her as best as he can but in turn, she agrees to help him stay sane by her touch. But while they were enemies at the beginning of the story, something will arise between them along the chapters and it was very touching to see them evolve together.

Holly is a young woman plagued by guilt for what she did to William Thorne and remained for more than a year confined in her home to work on all mechanisms and inventions. When the young man comes to her, she finds herself compelled to help him more than she would have thought. But while working together, William could help her at all levels. But they will also discover the secrets of the Williams’s life, something that could change the situation. I loved Holly, she is pragmatic, trying to keep her cool at all times and has a real heart of gold! Even if it is very difficult for her, she is capable of many things to help those she loves. Regarding William, we can say that it is the opposite end. He does not think a lot before acting, remains impulsive and does not hesitate to speak his mind. Together they will create a truly dynamic duo!

Their story will not be easy but it will evolve over the chapters and the author presents us some beautiful turning situations several times. I confess that I did not expect such a culprit and I was surprised to see that finally all the stories are linked together in a rather surprising way. I was a bit scared by the turn of the conclusion, but I’m finally happy and very eager to read the next novel, which I’m sure will be a pure delight. If you do not know the series, I can only advise you to try it, it is a fabulous discovery.

Avis : J’étais impatiente de découvrir ce nouveau roman de Kristen Callihan. En effet, j’ai passé un très bon moment avec chaque tome de la série et c’est toujours un réel plaisir de me plonger dans une nouvelle histoire des Ténèbres de Londres. Chaque fois que je finis un nouveau volume je me rappelle pourquoi j’apprécie autant cette auteure. Elle possède un indéniable talent pour présenter une romance piquante et une intrigue qui nous prend en haleine du début à la fin de l’histoire.

Nous suivons donc cette fois un nouveau couple : William Thorne et Holly Evernight. Voilà un an que sous la coupe d’un homme, Holly a privé William de son cœur et a implanté à la place une horloge. Depuis, William s’est juré de tuer la jeune femme et c’est maintenant qu’il décide d’agir. Cependant cette année et cet appareil l’a changé, et il est devenu un assassin sauvage que rien ni personne ne peut aider ou c’est en tout cas ce qu’il croyait. En effet, durant son attaque, il se rend compte qu’un geste d’Holly suffit à lui permettre de retrouver un peu ses esprits. Il décide donc de faire un pacte avec elle, il l’aide à trouver la personne qui désire la voir morte et à la protéger du mieux qu’il le peut et de son côté, elle accepte de l’aider à rester sain d’esprit par son toucher. Mais alors qu’ils étaient ennemis au début de l’histoire, quelque chose va naître entre eux au cours des chapitres et c’était très touchant de les voir ainsi évoluer ensemble.

Holly est une jeune femme rongée par la culpabilité de ce qu’elle a fait subir à William Thorne et qui reste depuis plus d’un an enfermée chez elle à travailler sur tous mécanismes et inventions. Quand le jeune homme se présente à elle, elle se retrouve obligée de l’aider plus qu’elle ne l’aurait pensé. Mais en travaillant ensemble, William pourrait l’aider à tous les niveaux. Mais tous les deux vont découvrir des secrets de la vie du jeune homme qui pourraient bien changer la donne. J’ai adoré Holly, elle est pragmatique, essaie de garder son sang froid en toutes circonstances et possède un véritable cœur en or ! Même si cela lui est très difficile, elle est capable d’un grand nombre de choses pour aider ceux qu’elle aime. Pour ce qui est de William, on peut dire qu’il est finalement son opposé. Il ne réfléchit pas tellement avant d’agir, reste donc impulsif et n’hésite pas à dire ce qu’il pense. Ensemble, ils vont vraiment créer un duo de choc !

Leur histoire ne sera pas simple mais elle évoluera au fil des chapitres et l’auteure nous présente de jolis retournements de situations à plusieurs moments. J’avoue que je ne m’attendais pas à un tel coupable et j’ai été surprise de voir que finalement les histoires se lient les unes aux autres d’une façon assez surprenante. J’ai eu un peu peur par la tournure de la conclusion mais je suis finalement ravie et je suis très impatiente de pouvoir lire le prochain roman qui je suis sûre sera un pur délice. Si vous ne connaissez pas la série, je ne peux que vous la conseiller, c’est une fabuleuse découverte.

Review: What mostly interested me in the summary of The Hook Up is the meeting between a regular student and the world of college football. True be told, being European I know next to nothing about football, but I’ve always been interested in stories surrounding it. Maybe because college football seems so different and way more grandiloquent than everything taking place in French universities. Therefore I liked the glimpse that the book offered in this world without being the main focus of the story. It is very well balanced and helps to make to have an interesting book for those who enjoy football but also to those who know nothing about it.

Thing is, in this book, football provides an interesting weight to Drew’s story. We clearly see how much important it is for him, how much it’s filling certain voids in his life, and these struggles are part of what makes him such an interesting and profound character in the end. I also enjoyed how he was conscious of himself, of his struggles, and of the state of his life. The author stayed very far from the jock cliché and it was a very nice touch. Plus it makes Drew way more likable than he would have been otherwise.

Anna was herself a very interesting heroine whom it was easy to relate to. She didn’t have the nicest uprising, without it being overly dramatic, and her ideas of love and herself were deeply jagged by it. Being a nobody during her teenage years didn’t make me wonder on her self-love, and seeing her mom date loser after loser didn’t help her faith in men and love either. It’s something that really makes her and that is noticeable from the very start from her wariness of Drew to the way she talks about her ex-relationships as supposedly “safe”. She holds herself back because of her fears and I think it’s something that a lot of people can easily relate to.

But what I liked the best in the book is the chemistry between Drew and Anna that was literally on fire. Their attraction is insane from the start and as we get to know them more properly it’s blatant how much their issues complete each others. Drew is afraid to lose everything, while the omnipresence of football in his life makes him somewhat distrustful about people’s intentions. Anna is herself terrified to not belong and to never be enough. With this it’s very nice to see how they work around their issues and beyond their initial attraction. Plus it’s a nice twist to have a male character who gets the importance of the relationship from the very start while the girl is the one afraid to commit and who doesn’t want to accept her own feelings. In the end it’s very interesting to see how they learn to overcome their fears and how their relationship evolves beyond simple attraction.

The Hook Up is a very nice book to read. The characters are real and compelling, their relationship exciting to witness, and the rhythm enticing. I was so caught up in Drew and Anna’s relationship that I almost read the whole book in one sitting and it’s exactly what I look for in a romance. I had never read anything by Kristen Callihan before this one but I’m definitively changing that !

Anna Jones veut simplement finir l’université et décider de ce qu’elle veut faire de sa vie. Craquer pour le quaterback Drew Baylor n’est certainement pas sur sa liste de choses à faire. Sûr de lui et charmeur, il vit sous les projecteurs et est beaucoup trop séduisant pour son propre bien. Si seulement elle pouvait ignorer ses regards aguicheurs et arrêter de penser à toutes les choses interdites qu’elle pourrait faire avec lui. Facile non ?

Dommage qu’il soit déterminé à lui faire briser toute ses règles…

Le Football a fait de grandes choses pour Drew. Cela lui a donné la reconnaissance, deux Championnats Nationaux, et le Heisman. Mais ce dont il a besoin c’est la sexy mais piquante Anna Jones. Son humour tranchant et son évidente indifférence pour sa célébrité l’excitent comme pas possible. Mais il y a un problème : elle le repousse. Incessamment.

Mais ça c’est jusqu’à ce qu’une rencontre fortuite se transforme en la meilleure partie de jambes en l’air de leur vie, le tout accompagné de la possibilité de quelque chose de génial. Malheureusement Anna veut en rester là et que cela reste un coup d’un soir. Maintenant c’est à Drew de la tenter avec plus : plus de sexe, plus de satisfaction, plus de temps avec lui. Jusqu’à ce qu’elle soit complètement accro. C’est une chance que Drew en connaisse un rayon sur la victoire.

 

All’s fair in love and football…Game on

Avis : Ce qui m’a intéressée dans le résumé de The Hook Up c’est la rencontre entre une étudiante lambda et le monde du football universitaire. Pour être franche je ne connais pas grand chose au football américain, mais le côté grandiloquent du sport dès un “simple” niveau universitaire m’a toujours assez intriguée pour que j’apprécie les histoires le mettant en scène. Du coup j’ai beaucoup apprécié que le roman nous offre un coup d’oeil à cet univers sans que pour autant le football ne devienne le focus principal de l’histoire. C’est un mix bien dosé qui permet de rendre le récit intéressant à ceux qui apprécient le football américain, mais également à ceux qui n’y connaissent rien.

Le truc avec le football ici c’est qu’il apporte un certain poids à l’histoire de Drew, le protagoniste masculin principal. On voit très rapidement que le football est important pour lui mais surtout à quel point c’est ce qui colmate certains vides immenses qui marquent sa vie. Je pense qu’au final c’est vraiment cela qui le rend si intéressant et profond en tant que personnage. Il est d’ailleurs très conscient de cela, de ce qu’il est, et de ses problèmes personnels. L’auteure reste donc plutôt loin du cliché du sportif écervelé et pédant ce qui est un vrai plus. Sans compter que cela rend forcément le personnage plus agréable.

Anna, l’héroïne, est elle-même une personnage intéressant auquel il est en plus très facile de s’identifier. Elle n’a pas forcément eu un passé très simple, sans qu’il soit pour autant dramatique, et ses idées de l’amour et d’elle-même en ont été malmenées. Être invisible durant son adolescence n’a rien fait pour améliorer son amour-propre, et voir sa mère sortir avec des tocards a encore moins aidé sa foi envers les hommes et l’amour en général. C’est d’ailleurs quelque chose qui la définie énormément et qui est très facilement visible de sa méfiance envers Drew jusqu’à sa façon d’évoquer ses anciennes relations en les qualifiant automatiquement de “sûres”. Elle est complètement enfermée dans cette peur maladive de l’autre et c’est quelque chose qui peut très facilement faire écho au lecteur.

Mais ce que j’ai le plus apprécié dans The Hook Up c’est l’alchimie entre Drew et Anna qui est littéralement dingue dès le début. C’est quelque chose qu’on ressent dès leurs premiers échanges et alors qu’on apprend à les connaître il devient évident que leurs problèmes se complètent à 100%. Drew a peur de tout perdre, alors même que l’omniprésence du football dans sa vie le rend méfiant à l’encontre de sa vie personnelle et des gens qui essaient de s’y insinuer. Anna est quant à elle terrifiée de ne pas avoir sa place, d’être rejetée car elle ne sera jamais assez bien. Le fait est qu’au final Drew est plutôt conscient de l’importance de la relation qui se créée entre eux alors que Anna a beaucoup plus de mal à gérer cela à cause de ses peurs. Cela offre une fois de plus un changement assez intéressant comparé aux habituels clichés du garçon qui a peur de s’engager et de la fille qui semble être la seule à prendre conscience de sentiments pourtant évidents. Au final c’est vraiment intéressant de voir la façon dont ils apprennent tout deux à dépasser leurs peurs et dont leur relation évolue bon gré mal gré au delà d’une simple attraction.

The Hook Up est donc un roman très agréable à lire. Les personnages sont réels et attachants, leur relation intéressante à voir évoluer, et le rythme plutôt prenant. D’ailleurs j’étais tellement passionnée par la relation entre Drew et Anna que j’ai quasiment lu le roman d’une seule traite, ce qui est exactement ce que j’attends d’une romance. En tout cas ce qui est sur c’est que si je n’avais jamais lu Kristen Callihan auparavant je compte bien me rattraper par la suite !

Review: Ah what a great story! The PNR books by Kristen Callihan are always a pleasure to read and although I have not read the third book, I was excited to be able to immerse myself in this fourth installment. After following the sisters in the first volumes, we now turn the stories to the secondary characters that we had the chance to discover and this is now about Jack and Mary.

Jack tries to escape his past for years, radically changing his life elsewhere to comply with a more tranquil existence. For years he tried to forget Mary, the young woman who attracts him. And while he had promised never to spend time with her, here she is, volunteered to become his partner and to investigate with him. You can understand that he is really unhappy! But while this barrier he is constructing is reduced gradually each time he spends time with her, his past might resurface and change everything. But in addition to this, some murders are committed, and our two heroes will have to quickly find out who the culprits are before everything falls on them and put their life in danger.

I was very curious to know why Jack refused to create a relationship of any kind with Mary when we see perfectly that something happens between them. They form together a perfect duo, and each complements the other perfectly. And despite what both think, it goes well more than they had hoped for. And while the indices appear gradually throughout the story, we realize that some characters are aware of what actually happens, but we’ll have to wait for the end of the novel to know the truth. And while I understand Jack, I must say that I find it is a pity that he did not try something before to see the reaction of Mary. But this is not the only revelation in the story and I confess that I was also very surprised when I learned the truth about the origins of Jack, this is something that I did not expecting at all. But as always Kristen Callihan is a perfect master for her characters and storylines and it was a great pleasure to discover what she reserved. Of course this is not everything and the investigation is also exciting! It was interesting to understand what was happening, the reason for the killings or the person responsible. All crosses one way or another, past, present, and power struggles.

It was a very good book once again but I had no doubt about it. The magic is waiting for you, all this surrounded by mysteries and conspiracies. A nice surprise and I’m curious to see who will be highlighted in the next volume.
