Fifth Grave Past the Light by Darynda Jones

Charley Davidson, Book 5

Synopsis: Charley Davidson may not look like your everyday, run-of-the-mill grim reaper, but she has vowed to reap grimness wherever she goes despite this unfortunate fact. Sadly, she gets sidetracked when the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, moves in next door. As he is the main suspect in her arson case, she is determined to stay away from him until she can find out the truth. According to her therapist, however, she lacks conviction.

When dead women start appearing in her apartment – lost, confused and terrified beyond reason – Charley has no choice but to ask for Reyes’s help, especially when it becomes apparent that her own sister Gemma is the serial killer’s next target. With his ability to observe incorporeally, surely he can find out who’s responsible. And even if he can’t, he is the one man alive who could protect Gemma no matter who or what came at her. But he wants something in return: Charley. All of her – body and soul. And to keep her sister safe, it is a price she is willing to pay…

Review: I waited with great anticipation to read this new novel by Darynda Jones. I love the Charley Davidson series and it’s always a pleasure to immerse myself in another volume.

Since Reyes moved into the apartment next to her, Charley did not really know how to behave. And when she suspects him of burning some buildings, she decides to stay away from him the time to understand what is really happening. But it is not at all to the taste of Reyes, who has other plans for her. In addition, our heroine ends up with more problems than usual. Twenty young blonde women, dead, have taken up residence in her apartment. And despite her desire to help them, none of them speak or pay any attention to her. But this is not everything and the captain of the police begins to ask more questions about her, trying to understand her ability to resolve investigations since her childhood.

It is always a pleasure to follow Charley and Darynda has always some great ideas for her. I must say that I was a bit scared because at the beginning of the novel I had a little trouble to get into the story, but after one or two chapters I was completely swept away. Everything comes together and we do not have time to wait that something new is happening. Thanks to Garrett, we learn a lot more about our two characters and it’s true that I did not expect at all to such revelations. All this makes us want to see how the series will progress! Reyes is of course always equal to himself and always wants more. We wonders how Charley happens to resist him (or does she really do?) But it’s always funny to see her succumb again. This volume is filled with good times like some sad ones but we are always blown away by the style of the author. I confess that I did not expect such an end, and I was heartbroken when I saw all that Charley had to endure. We can also discover a new character with extraordinary abilities and I admit that I’m really curious about it. I wonder if it will become a recurring character in the rest of the story.

As always it is a very good book and if you do not know the series yet I can only recommend it to you, you’ll be blown away. It is a mixture of humor, action and amazing investigations. And if that does not convince you, Reyes will!

Absolutely LOVE this series and so glad that I decided to give it a try two years ago! Was bummed not to have gotten an ARC of this like I did last year, so my wait’s been doubly long it seems!
