Execution Underground, Book 1
Synopsis: Hunters of the supernatural, the Execution Underground are an elite group tasked with protecting humanity…but what happens when danger collides with desire?
Jace McCannon has one loyalty: the Execution Underground. Despite his mixed blood, his hatred for the werewolves he hunts is legendary. But in his search for a sadistic killer, Jace finds himself face to face with a stunningly seductive packmaster…and longing for a night with his mortal enemy.
Nothing can stop Frankie Amato from defending her kind–or catching the rogue responsible for killing women in her territory. For that, this alpha female needs Jace’s skills more than she wants to admit. But as their investigation exposes evil truths, need burns into a passion that dare not be fulfilled. For to do so will have deadly consequences for them both…
Review: I’ve read the Kait Ballenger’s novella before having the opportunity to read the first novel and I admit that I was curious to see how the story would be. Yes I was looking forward to see if I would find the characters I met in the first volume but eventually I completely forgot the novella when started.
Jace is a hunter pursuing rogues werewolves, yet he is himself hybrid and would be killed if his partners learn the truth about him. However, he enjoys his job and even becomes one of the best. Yet it is a very complex case this time for him. Indeed, many young women are killed by a sadist and it is up to him to find the culprit. But as time passes, there are many victims but no track is looming. Also when he finds Frankie, a young woman he is attracted to, she explains that she is herself seeking for the killer, and with her he sees a chance to solve the case. But this girl is not like any other and she is all he can hate in a person, that is to say, an alpha werewolf. And while all objects, an unshakable bond will unite them although neither of them actually accept it.
I loved this story, much more than the novella. It was very interesting to follow each of the characters and get to know them. I was also very curious to understand what the killer had against Jace because we finally learn it at the end of the novel and it was a real surprise, I did not expect that. The plot is well done and I was looking forward to see where the story would lead us. Jace is a person who hates himself, because of his nature and Frankie will help him to gradually accept who he is. I loved this heroine. She is strong and does not let herself pushed around as she is the pack leader. It is also rare to see a women in literature in this position and it was really nice to see she was able to handle everything even if itshe was able to handle everything even if it’s not easy.
So it was a very good paranormal romance book and I admit that I’m curious to read the second volume and discover the rest of the stories of the other characters. It’s a nice mix of action, love and investigation. A very good new series.
