Shadowdance by Kristen Callihan

Darkest London, Book 4

Synopsis: Once a heart is lost in shadow…

Life has been anything but kind to Mary Chase. But the Society for the Suppression of Supernaturals has given her purpose. Now she’s been tasked with catching a vicious murderer dubbed the Bishop of Charing Cross. But someone is already on the case—and the last thing he relishes is a partner.

Only someone who lives in darkness can find it.

Jack Talent has been alone with his demons for many years. He never expected to have the willful Mary Chase assist him on the Bishop case. Their age-old rivalry reaches new heights—even as their desire for one another reaches a fever pitch. Though he aches to bring her close, Jack’s dark secrets are a chasm between them. With dangerous enemies closing in, Jack must find the strength to face the past…or risk losing Mary forever.

Review: Ah what a great story! The PNR books by Kristen Callihan are always a pleasure to read and although I have not read the third book, I was excited to be able to immerse myself in this fourth installment. After following the sisters in the first volumes, we now turn the stories to the secondary characters that we had the chance to discover and this is now about Jack and Mary.

Jack tries to escape his past for years, radically changing his life elsewhere to comply with a more tranquil existence. For years he tried to forget Mary, the young woman who attracts him. And while he had promised never to spend time with her, here she is, volunteered to become his partner and to investigate with him. You can understand that he is really unhappy! But while this barrier he is constructing is reduced gradually each time he spends time with her, his past might resurface and change everything. But in addition to this, some murders are committed, and our two heroes will have to quickly find out who the culprits are before everything falls on them and put their life in danger.

I was very curious to know why Jack refused to create a relationship of any kind with Mary when we see perfectly that something happens between them. They form together a perfect duo, and each complements the other perfectly. And despite what both think, it goes well more than they had hoped for. And while the indices appear gradually throughout the story, we realize that some characters are aware of what actually happens, but we’ll have to wait for the end of the novel to know the truth. And while I understand Jack, I must say that I find it is a pity that he did not try something before to see the reaction of Mary. But this is not the only revelation in the story and I confess that I was also very surprised when I learned the truth about the origins of Jack, this is something that I did not expecting at all. But as always Kristen Callihan is a perfect master for her characters and storylines and it was a great pleasure to discover what she reserved. Of course this is not everything and the investigation is also exciting! It was interesting to understand what was happening, the reason for the killings or the person responsible. All crosses one way or another, past, present, and power struggles.

It was a very good book once again but I had no doubt about it. The magic is waiting for you, all this surrounded by mysteries and conspiracies. A nice surprise and I’m curious to see who will be highlighted in the next volume.

  1. Wow! You have a weird of reading series because it’s okay for you to skip one book to go to the next one. I couldn’t do that, Mel. If I do, my reading experience will get ruined. Hahahha. I am so obsessed with reading series books in order.

I am happy that you enjoyed this one. I always love it when one of the two MCs try to stay away from the other and yet, he/she always ends up with him or her. It’s cliche but I always find the process of finally bringing them together very interesting. 😀

  2. Ooh nice review to you too! As you already know I really loved this one and it’s now my fave in the series! Glad to see you enjoyed it too!

Did you see that Evernight is the next novel and that Holly and Will are our heroes?! And with that epilogue, I know that that one will start out marvelous! 😉
