Tin Star by Cecil Castellucci

Tin Star, Book 1

Synopsis: On their way to start a new life, Tula and her family travel on the Prairie Rose, a colony ship headed to a planet in the outer reaches of the galaxy. All is going well until the ship makes a stop at a remote space station, the Yertina Feray, and the colonist’s leader, Brother Blue, beats Tula within an inch of her life. An alien, Heckleck, saves her and teaches her the ways of life on the space station.

When three humans crash land onto the station, Tula’s desire for escape becomes irresistible, and her desire for companionship becomes unavoidable. But just as Tula begins to concoct a plan to get off the space station and kill Brother Blue, everything goes awry, and suddenly romance is the farthest thing from her mind.

Review: I think you all know that I have a little trouble with science fiction and above all that: space, vessels and other things like that. Yet when I received the book and when I saw the significant thickness of the novel, I thought it was an opportunity to read something different. So here I am with Tin Star, and I must say that my reading was a very good surprise. It is true that this is a real pure science fiction book but also full of pretty ideas.

We discover Tula, a girl on the way to another planet, living in a colony leaded by Brother Blue. But while her mother and sister are completely under the influence of this man, the girl asks questions but this will lead her to her downfall. Beaten and left for dead by the man that everyone admires, she is abandoned on Yertina Feray, a space station, where no human lives. Problem? It also seems that all Aliens hate her kind and now that she is left alone, she must find a way to survive. And while Heckleck takes her under his wing and tries to teach her to stay alive in this intriguing place, she understands that her preconceived ideas on these species were far from being true. Whether about her savior or about one of the persons in charge of the place: Tournour, she learns to live another life, while understanding that there is much more than she thought. But her life is turned upside down the day three people arrive, stranded because of the explosion of their ship. Therefore, the girl will have to make a choice and understand what is best for her, but her plans are finally constantly changing.

I loved to follow Tulan, she is a strong girl, disillusioned by humans, she nevertheless wants to take revenge and she is preparing it for years. Yet her solitude weighs on her and despite the friends she has made, it is difficult for her to stay away from these new humans once arrived. I must say that I quite understand her mistrust of them, especially after all she has suffered. I must say that I immediately understood that everyone wanted something from her, even if it takes a bit before we understand what it is exactly. Yet Tula will not be alone, and I loved Heckleck as he is a very complex character and he is always there for our heroine, but this is not the only one and I had a lot of questions about Tournour. Indeed, he always seems to follow her from near and far and it’s a bit difficult to understand exactly what he wants. We learn much more about him here and I’m really curious to find him in the next novel.

The ideas of the author were really interesting, whether at the level of the universe and the station where we evolve or about the different species we discover here. Yes because I have to say they are far from having the same physical as humans but I’ll leave you the chance to discover that for yourself. To conclude this was a good story and I’m curious to see how the second volume will be.

  1. oh wow this sounds great, I have to admit I cannot remember the last time I myself read a science fiction novel. I love watching shows, but as far as reading them goes, I been a little behind.
