Shaede Assassin, Book 4

Synopsis: Six months can feel like just a couple of weeks when you’ve been away in another realm. Literally.

Now that Darian is back in Seattle, she’s ready to face the life—and the man—she left behind. But it’s not going to be easy when a ghost from her past shows up looking to wreak havoc on Seattle’s supernatural crime scene.

Darian isn’t as careless as she used to be, though. She and Tyler, her sexy Jinn protector, have come a long way in the trust department. And it’s a good thing too—because when Ty contracts her to assassinate a wickedly powerful supernatural who goes by the name of Mithras, it will take all her faith in Ty, and herself, to get the job done.

While Darian does whatever it takes to get to her mark, Xander, the Shaede King is busy making plans of his own. With Darian’s attention divided between Lorik’s secrets and her mission she might not be able to stop Xander from doing anything in his power to separate Darian from her sworn protector and in the process, destroy his own kingdom…

Review: You know what? I love this series… really! Since the end of the last volume, I could not wait to get into this one. But what was not my surprise when I learned that the publisher would stop releasing the novels… One of the saddest things and I was very afraid of not being able to read more adventures of the heroine while I greatly appreciate them. But Amanda did not leave her behind and she was able to present a new book. One thing is sure, it was worth it! The book is once again awesome!

Darian has just returned from two weeks at Brakae’s, but in reality, six months have already passed, and everyone seems to be waiting for her return. However, after what she lived with Kade, it is very difficult for her to deal with Ty and Xander, but nobody seems to take her desires into account. Trying to forget everything that has happened, she will try to launch headlong into work, asking for a new mission. Yet nothing is going to end well when Lorik, a character from her past, comes in asking for help. How has this human managed to live after so many years? And why is he coming back precisely at this time? These are questions that haunt us throughout the reading and whatever we might think, the real answers are given at the end of the story. But she might find her answers by working for him when she discovers that he knows her new target. I confess that I was really intrigued by this character and I had some difficulties to understand exactly what he wanted from the young woman. And even if we understand why she is helping him, I would have been much less comprehensive than Darian, given the situations in which he puts her. Yet it is true that in the end I was really surprised, and I did not expect at all such a turnaround from this character who seemed so boring.

But this is not all of course because in addition to all this, Xander and Ty are also there to put their grain of salt. While Ty remains patient enough with the young woman, leaving her time to regain her brands, he also hides many secrets from her. Oh yes, because Darian has many questions, and it seems that nobody wants to give her the answers. However, after some researches, we discover some new elements about the Jinn and I think we will discover even more thereafter. But one thing is for sure, troubles are only beginning! Oh yes! It is very touching to see the two characters together, trying to do their best to have some kind of relationship. Then there is Xander… I really struggle to choose between the two. It is true that they are very different and we often hate Xander by his actions, but he also has something that draws us to him irresistibly. And while the feelings of the heroine are messed up, it’s the same for ours. While Ty is patient, it is very difficult for Xander to wait to see what the young woman will choose to do. And although it is hard to understand his bluntness, we know that he utterly loves the young woman, and is even willing to risk his kingdom for her. But Darian is not an easy woman and given her fear to confront her feelings and the problems with her past relationship, she refuses to be dictated her choice.

Oh yes, you surely understand that we have a lot of things here and I had a great time with this new volume, but one thing is sure, Amanda Bonilla is terrible and the cliffy at the end of the story makes only want us to jump on the next novel. Oh yes, because a final event completely changes the game and I’m very curious to see what will happen. Darian understands that she has to make choices, even if they are not simple. She will also evolve and work on herself to learn to trust and share her secrets, something which is still quite difficult for her. So yes, a heroine that we continue to love, some colorful characters and an exciting plot. I can only recommend you this series, it is a gem! I hope the next story will come soon because I’m really impatient!

When you HAVE to grab the next book in a series, that is a good sign. There have been so many series that I loved but didn’t continue because I have too many books to read. But some series are so amazing, I have the book in my hands publishing day. I always wanted to read this series. I hope I will love it as much as you do.

    1. Melliane

oh I hope so as well. you’re right it’s perfect to have a series like that where you know you won’t be disappointed.

  6. Jenny @ Supernatural Snark

So glad you loved this one so much Melliane! It sounds amazing save for that massive cliffhanger at the end, that makes me want to cry a little. I don’t do well with cliffhangers unless I have the next book in hand already!!! Can’t wait to see what you think of the next installment:)

    1. Melliane

yes it’s true that it’s difficult sometimes but well it’s worth it!

  7. Mogsy

I hadn’t heard of this series before until I read a review for it on Rabid Reads. It sounds like a series I would love. I hope the publisher or the author will still get the books out to us!

  9. Lily

Okay i don’t remember if you reviewed the prevouis books in this series before because if you did they must already be on my TBR shelf on goodreads for the covers alone! I’m glad this book did it for you! I always want to grab all the books that others enjoy!

    1. Melliane

I think it was before you were following my blog as well but they’re really good!

  10. kimbacaffeinate

I have a love hate with cliffhangers. On one hand I am all nooooos and on the other it keeps me anticipation high for the next book. So glad you are loving this series my friend.

    1. Melliane

that’s true, depends on how it’s done. thank you!

  11. Giselle

  13. Braine Talk Supe

Darn publishers! I just read something like this where the publisher pulled the plug abruptly. Good thing the author did a good job with the ending under the circumstances. Amanda B. would appreciate your review.

    1. Melliane

yes that’s really sad mainly when we really not done with the series. But I’m glad there are other ways too.

  14. Melissa (My World...in words and pages)

I have the first book and really want/need to get to this series. Especially after learning the history in the world. 🙂 Thank you!

    1. Melliane

I’m curious to see what you’ll think of it!

  15. brandileigh2003

This does sound like a great addition to the series but silly pubs

    1. Melliane

      yes I really love it!

  16. anna@herding cats & burning soup

Oh man I worry about that with a few series I read that they’ll just stop pubbing them. Ahh. These sound so good! I’ll have to give a look for book one 🙂 Glad to hear it was so good! And love that cover 🙂

    1. Melliane

oh yes it’s one of my fave so I was really anxious about it but I’m glad she found a way to give us more.

  17. Jessica @ Rabid Reads

And here is another series I need to catch up on. Fortunately, I think I’m only two books behind (this one included), so a lot less daunting than the five Charley Davidson books I need to read 😉 AND 5 stars is highly motivating. I love this series anyway–it’s so unique–but a 5 star book 4 . . . *grabby hands* Great review, Melliane!

    1. Melliane

oh yes I just love this series and I hope it’s the same for you but I understand because so many books out there.

  18. Silvia

I have a confession to make… I love cliffhangers! They always give me the right push to keep reading a series and, when they’re very well delivered, they taste better than a finale. (Hope I don’t sound too crazy, lol) This seems like a gem I should definitely check, thanks for sharing your thoughts, Melliane! 🙂

    1. Melliane

Lol it depends on the cliffy I think. But as I easily forget it’s ok for me.

  19. Kirsty-Marie

I hate when publishers sometimes leave a series behind when it’s not finished. So glad you can still get it at least. Sometimes It makes me boycott them though (like the Vampire Diaries, since they took over from L J Smiths.) I love series’ that include different dimensions though! Glad you enjoyed it at least! Hope you don’t have to wait too long for the next volume! 🙂
