Divine and Dateless by Tara West

Synopsis: Good girls go to heaven. Bad girls go all the way…

What can be worse than electrocuting yourself while getting ready for your internet date? Realizing the hot stud you’ve been fondling is the Grim Reaper? Being chased by a sex-crazed, bloated, naked corpse?

How about an eternity of more bad hair days and horrific dates? Or lusting after the one guy in all the afterlife whose hydrophobia rivals his fear of commitment?

Yeah, that’s a whole lot worse.

Review: When I saw the book, I knew I would have the opportunity to have a light story, without brainstorming and of course, full of humor. And I was not mistaken, I actually had it all to my greatest pleasure. It’s always nice to have such a story at this time of the year.

Ash has never really had much luck, and her death does not help the situation. Electrocuted while she was getting ready for a date taken on the internet, she will have to accept her new situation. Oh yes, because it is difficult to understand that it’s the end when a sexy reaper comes to take you.

I confess that their meeting made me laugh. Ash is determined to make him see all the colors. And while he has a strict schedule, he will have to manage this woman who does not accept her condition and wants proof of his identity and apparently flirting may well be the solution. But then he takes her to heaven, the last level (on 13), where all good souls meet, and Ash will discover there the most wonderful place in the world. Oh yes, because here everything is beautiful, you can have whatever you want, eat without gaining weight (yes it is specified). But you know what Ash prefers in all this? Don’t you? Well a valet is assigned to her, someone who can take the face of everyone she wants. Why is he there? To satisfy her desires! Yes all her desires. And of course, Grim is the one she wants.

Another scene that also made me smile more than once? The next morning when Grim appears, understanding that the servant looks like him and knows what happened with her. But Ash’s reaction when she learned that she did not actually earn her presence in paradise and should go down a level to earn points, was really fun. Oh yes because purgatory is not at all governed by the same rules. Oh no! And our heroine will have to quickly get used to this new environment, even if it’s hard, oh yes, very hard. But with a neighbor like Grim, she may well make sacrifices.

I really had a good time with the book, even if it is true that the story is not original, Ash is full of bad luck and whatever she tries, it does not work out. Yet in this context, she will also meet some adorable characters who will help and follow her in her choices. Whether her neighbor, always there to give her some advices or Grim. Oh man! I think we all want a guy like that at home. He is kind, funny and above all, compassionate. He tries to help Ash his best, to be present for her, not to take advantage of her and it’s true that it was very touching to see him do so. I must say they are both endearing. Then we have Ash. Ah yes, that’s another matter. She may not be very nice, but she is not bad either. She is just trying to exist and continue her life as she has always done it. But in this place, there are all kinds of people and she is very good at making enemies.

I will not say more because it is very easy to tell you everything and I may have already said too much, but in any case I had a great time with this novel. I did not expect the end of the book with such a situation for Ash but I admit that I’m curious to read on to see what the author has in store for us. This is certainly a perfect read for a relaxing time.

  1. Sometimes mindless reads can be just what the doctor ordered, especially after a particularly stressful day. I think it helped that you knew what to expect going in because that way you weren’t disappointed by the unoriginal story, and it still managed to surprise you in a few days which is always a bonus.

  2. Even the cover is fun! Love ones that make you laugh (especially scenes and conversations, though, I hate it when you’re reading in public because awkward, haha) But, hey, a story that isn’t exactly original isn’t that bad, especially when its sounds as fun as this. 🙂

  3. Sometimes, I just need entertainment, pure and simple. Not originality, or even a whole lot of character development. Just a story that makes me laugh and perhaps even swoon here and there. This seems to be just the thing. Great review.
