One Week Girlfriend by Monica Murphy

One Week Girlfriend, Book 1

Synopsis: Temporary. That one single word best describes my life these last few years. I’m working at a temporary job until I can finally break free. I’m my little brother’s temporary mother since our mom doesn’t give a crap about either of us. And I’m that temporary girl all the guys want to get with because I give it up so easily. According to the rumors, at least.

But now I’m the temporary girlfriend of Drew Callahan, college football legend and all around golden guy. He’s beautiful, sweet—and he’s hiding way more secrets than I am. He’s brought me into this fake life where everyone seems to hate me. And everyone seems to want something from him. The only thing he seems to want though is…

Me.

I don’t know what to believe anymore. All I know is, I think Drew needs me. And I want to be there for him.

Forever.

Review: I heard nice things about Monica Murphy but I hadn’t read her work yet. So it’s true that this first volume intrigued me. New adult is not necessarily my favorite genre, but I love to read one from time to time. In the end it is true that I had a great time with the book and I was quite surprised to see that there is a second volume featuring our two protagonists before switching to another character and to finally finishing a fourth volume on the brother of our heroine, Fable.

Fable is known to be an easy girl and this does not give her a lot of good feedback. But one day, Drew, a popular boy she does not really know, shows up at the door of the bar to engage her for a large sum of money. Resistant at first, Fable surrenders rather quickly as she needs all the money possible to run her family and even if the request is strange, she accepts it. Oh yes, because he wants her to become his girlfriend for a week to help him go through the ordeal that awaits him when he returns to his family. Yet while both tries to resist their attraction, something between them might appear, linking them and evolving through the chapters. But will Drew ignore the trauma of his childhood to have a relationship with a young woman?

We understand very quickly that the Drew’s family has something unhealthy. Yes because her stepmother and father both act very strangely. I knew personally rather quickly what was happening, and I think it is the same for Fable, though she expects Drew to confide in her. Yet it is not for lack of trying to make him talk. But the young man is stuck in a painful past and memories that constantly haunt him. He tries to reject Fable, and yet he needs her as nobody before. Yet even if Fable tries to hang on him, to understand, help him, rejection is a very difficult thing. She also tries to stay away from time to time, knowing that she is not a girl for him and that all this is a farce, but it is always more difficult than expected.

As I said I understood very quickly what was happening, even the last revelation was not a surprise but it is not a problem as we have a good time while we follow our characters and understand their complexity. Our heart breaks with them, we want them to find a normal relationship, to live happy and yet nothing is certain. You’ll understand that with the end of the story!

In any case I am very curious to discover the rest of the story of Drew and Fable. To see how they manage to solve their problems and to evolve and create something tangible by making them forget about their past.

  1. I missed these somehow. I do really enjoy her books. I read her Billionaire’s club a while back that’s from Avon and have been reading on her current series that I can’t for the life of me remember the name of but it’s set at a cosmetics company. Very different feel to it. I’ll so have to check out this series when I have a reading break 😀

  2. Yeah, New Adult is not something I usually read, either, but so far since I’m SO picky, most of what I read were gems. I might give this one a try, although I’m worried about the “troubled past” trope since it’s kind of everywhere in this demographic. Hopefully Drew’s past and how it’s tackeld will bring something new to the plate!
