Persuasion by Jane Austen

Synopsis: Twenty-seven-year old Anne Elliot is Austen’s most adult heroine. Eight years before the story proper begins, she is happily betrothed to a naval officer, Frederick Wentworth, but she precipitously breaks off the engagement when persuaded by her friend Lady Russell that such a match is unworthy. The breakup produces in Anne a deep and long-lasting regret. When later Wentworth returns from sea a rich and successful captain, he finds Anne’s family on the brink of financial ruin and his own sister a tenant in Kellynch Hall, the Elliot estate. All the tension of the novel revolves around one question: Will Anne and Wentworth be reunited in their love?

Review: I do not read lots of classics but I made a decision to read everything that Jane Austen could have written. Persuasion is therefore my new challenge and I enjoyed reading it.

Anne Elliot is the third daughter of the family, the most forsaken and forgotten by all. Her father and sisters treat her all pretty bad, but it does not matter for the young woman, and she evolves in this context as she can while never complaining. Yet something always marks her past … Indeed, eight years ago Anne and Frederick broke up and since, she remains alone and refusing any suitor. Having been convinced by her family, the young woman didn’t leave with the man she agreed to marry and regrets her choice now. But life evolves and things completely change when one day, the debt accumulating, her family must rent their homes to avoid losing too much money. But what Anne did not expect to see is Frederick or rather his brother and sister to settle down in her old house, bringing the man she loves and bringing all the memories she believed buried.

It was an interesting story to follow and I confess that I looked forward to the meeting between our two heroes but this is not what I expected. I was hoping for them to finally talk and solve some of their problems, but it was not really the case. As in many of the novels of the author, there are many missed moments or failed meetings but eventually we end up with a pretty story. Anne is a touching heroine we hope to see happy, so she can finally have her own life but it is also something difficult to manage…

Jane Austen presents us once again a good story and I can’t wait to see my feelings about her other novels.
