Dragons: One of My Favorite Things

By Jess Haines

Hello there!  Jess Haines here.  You might know me as the author of the H&W Investigations series—urban fantasy novels about Shiarra Waynest, a human private investigator in an alternate, present-day New York. Somehow she keeps getting pulled into supernatural troubles way above her pay grade… I also have a new series called Blackhollow Academy that follows the adventures of young magi (think wizards) who are on the hunt for their first familiars.

I’m guessing since you’re here, you like urban fantasy, and possibly some paranormal romance, too. One of my favorite aspects of writing urban fantasy is how you can vary all over the spectrum, from a touch of science fiction to full blown fantasy, while keeping everything in a modern setting.

One of my favorite paranormal creatures to both read and write about is dragons. I know I’m better known for playing in the vampire and werewolf sandbox, but from the time I was a kid, dragons have always fascinated me.

It’s not the treasure. It’s not the ferocious nature. It’s being wise and powerful and mysterious. It’s being king of land, sky, and all they survey.

It’s being a force of nature—one to be reckoned with.

There are some great takes on dragons out there, and whether you prefer the science fiction flavor of Anne McCaffrey, the high fantasy adventure of DragonLance, or the melt-your-panties fantasy-fueled sexiness of Thea Harrison, it’s always fun to see different takes on dragons in fiction.

Since this is a blog devoted to the love of reading and sharing thoughts about books, I thought I might share some of my favorite dragon books with you:

THE ELVENBANE by Mercedes Lackey and Andre Norton: A truly epic fantasy that I believe should be a staple in the library of anyone who enjoys high fantasy that involves dragons. In a world ruled by the decadent, merciless elves, run by enslaved humans, it is prophesized that a halfblood will rise and overthrow the elven regime. The halfblood—raised by dragons.

THE LEGEND OF HUMA by Richard A. Knaak: This is a tragic love story between a silver dragon and a knight. While I might be wearing rose-colored glasses where this book is concerned, I still cherish the worn, time-weathered copy I have had since I was a teenager and like to reread it on occasion. It’s classic high fantasy, and a great introduction to the world of Krynn. I recommend it if you like high fantasy material (Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones) that is a fast read, more along the lines of modern urban fantasy.

DRAGONSONG and DRAGONSINGER by Anne McCaffrey: These books are just lovely. While they do provide a poignant look at the emotional abuse that can be heaped on an artist by family who just don’t understand, it’s a glorious adventure about finding your people—the ones who do love you for who you are and support your endeavors unconditionally. While most of the “dragons” in these books are tiny, they are still powerful friends to have, and make it so much easier to fall in love with the world of Pern that Ms. McCaffrey created.

The Enchanted Forest Chronicles (Series) by Patricia C. Wrede: Okay, I know this isn’t one book, but the whole thing is just fabulous. If you ever got tired of reading about princesses who sit around waiting to be rescued, you will find this a delightful breath of fresh air. It’s a middle grade/young adult series about a princess who is tired of the nonsense about manners and balls and arranged marriages to dull boors, so she sets off on her own adventures and becomes a dragon’s princess. Her attitude and attempts to blow off the knights and princes who attempt to rescue her are hilarious, and I always love to recommend this series, no matter the reader’s age.

Have you read any of those books? My social media contact information is below—let me know if you want to fangirl over some of them with me. Before I go, I do want to throw out a mention of my latest release, SMOKE AND MIRRORS, which involves magic, a whopper of a lie, and—my favorite—a dragon!

Smoke and Mirror (Blackhollow Academy, 1) – Jess Haines

Synopsis: A girl who uses her illusions to fool the world into thinking she’s just like all the other magi.

A dragon who sees through her lies.

Together they just might survive a world that wants to control or destroy them both.

Kimberly may wield ultimate cosmic power, but even a mage has to pay the rent. No one will hire her for her magic talents until she’s got the credentials, so she’s stuck in a crappy rent controlled apartment with her mother, yearning for treats she can’t afford at her part time job in a café, counting down the days until she graduates the secret Blackhollow Academy school for magi. Only then will she have the certificate she needs to land her dream job in a coven.

The problem? She needs a familiar to graduate.

As an illusionist, she doesn’t have the ability to summon or create a familiar of her own. Her only option is to convince a supernatural creature to let her bind it instead. Since having a powerful Other at her beck and call would guarantee her a place in a coven after she graduates—and legendary treasure hoards are an added bonus—she thinks binding a dragon as her familiar will solve all her problems…

Because sometimes a girl needs a dragon, not a knight….

You can win a French copy of Hunted by the Others or an original signed copy of Smoke & Mirror.

  1. Dragons are one of my favourite things, too! I haven’t read any of the books mentioned here, though, so I think it’s time for me to remedy to that 😉
Thanks for the post and the giveaway!

  2. I didn’t know about Jess’ UF series, but it sounds great.

Yep, I’m a fan of the dragons, too. I haven’t read any of those books. I do love it when the dragons make an appearance in Eileen Wilks’ World of the Lupi series that I’m reading.
