The Opportunist by Tarryn Fisher

Love Me with Lies, Book 1

Synopsis: Olivia Kaspen is a sharp tongued manipulator used to always getting what she wants. With just one exception-Caleb Drake, the one she foolishly let slip away. After a chance encounter brings Caleb back into her life, Olivia finds herself wanting a second chance with her first love, and asking herself how far she is willing to go to get him back. Her only problem is a red head named Leah, Caleb’s new love. Olivia must fight for what was once hers, and in the process discover that sometimes love falls short of redemption.

Review: I was able to discover Tarryn Fisher with the Never Never series co-written with Colleen Hoover but it was true that I was curious to see what she could write alone. At first I must confess that I was not sure by such a story but how to resist?

In this story, we follow two characters: Olivia and Caleb. We follow them over the years as soon as they meet in high school alternating present and past. The story thus begins nowadays by the meeting between the two protagonists in a CD shop. It seems that something terrible happened between them but the feelings of Olivia have not changed since and when she realizes that Caleb is amnesic, she finally sees it as a second chance. So begins a rather strange relationship, especially when we know that the young man is already with someone. It’s quite difficult to see the conflict in Olivia’s mind … She is happy to have finally found the only boy she ever loved and at the same time she can only feel guilt about the fact that she lies to him and that as soon as he will discover the truth about her, she will find herself alone again.

It’s a difficult story that we’re following here … I was really wondering what might have happened between them two years ago, which had pushed them to separate in this way and finally I understood. I think it’s very difficult for the people around her to understand Olivia. She may seem harsh and manipulative and it is true that she acts this way, but when we dig farther we understand that her insecurities are the cause and that finally nothing has managed to calm them down. I can understand that it is difficult for others because she is not really easy and at the same time she is very intense.

I will not say more because I think I have already said a lot but it is a story that took me to the guts, which made me hope but this is not a cute story, it is not so simple. It is a book of manipulations, of secrets, and of a difficult love, it is a story of missed love, about two people who love each other since adolescence but whose paths are only separating.

  1. You know I love when a story is not that “easy” and it touches you in some way. Really glad to hear this one worked so well for you, I might decide to go for it as well!

  2. Isn’t that funny … reading the synopsis my first thought was to wonder about how many of us finding ourselves longing to know what might have been, of longing to get back with our first loves.

Not at first a book I thought was for me but your comment that it is not a simple read, that it is a book of manipulations, of secrets has me wondering.

    Great review, thanks Melliane.
