Tyler Johnson Was Here by Jay Coles

Synopsis: When Marvin Johnson’s twin, Tyler, goes to a party, Marvin decides to tag along to keep an eye on his brother. But what starts as harmless fun turns into a shooting, followed by a police raid.

The next day, Tyler has gone missing, and it’s up to Marvin to find him. But when Tyler is found dead, a video leaked online tells an even more chilling story: Tyler has been shot and killed by a police officer. Terrified as his mother unravels and mourning a brother who is now a hashtag, Marvin must learn what justice and freedom really mean.

Review: I found the theme of this novel really interesting and important. I remembered seeing the cover pass when it was released in English and I was curious to get into the story.

But fiou this novel … I want to cry, I have a stomach ache when thinking about it, I’m disgusted and I’m so sad. I think the worst part of all this is that it happens, that it exists and it’s horrible to think that it can happen. It’s an intense story, from which we do not come out unscathed. Yes, it’s a story that breaks our heart. I do not know what else to say to you, because I do not want to tell you the sad story of Marvin. But I can tell you that this is the story of a brave boy, of a boy who loved his brother and who fought for him, even though he was no longer there and that it was dangerous. It’s a boy who just wanted justice done for his twin. But as everywhere, even if we know that we are right, that it is the truth, sometimes it is not enough and we must fight.

  1. This is what I feel after reading Rachel Vincen’t Menagerie. It’s “fantasy” or “fiction” but it’s a sad sad story. I love books who pierces the 4th wall like that.
