Heroine Complex by Sarah Kuhn

Heroine Complex, Book 1

Synopsis: Being a superheroine is hard. Working for one is even harder.

Evie Tanaka is the put-upon personal assistant to Aveda Jupiter, her childhood best friend and San Francisco’s most beloved superheroine. She’s great at her job—blending into the background, handling her boss’s epic diva tantrums, and getting demon blood out of leather pants.

Unfortunately, she’s not nearly as together when it comes to running her own life, standing up for herself, or raising her tempestuous teenage sister, Bea.

But everything changes when Evie’s forced to pose as her glamorous boss for one night, and her darkest comes out: she has powers, too. Now it’s up to her to contend with murderous cupcakes, nosy gossip bloggers, and supernatural karaoke battles—all while juggling unexpected romance and Aveda’s increasingly outrageous demands. And when a larger threat emerges, Evie must finally take charge and become a superheroine in her own right… or see her city fall to a full-on demonic invasion.

Review: I like novels about superheroes, I find it always intriguing and different, so I was curious to discover this story. Still, I must say that it pissed me off. Oh yes! I will explain you immediately why. We follow here Evie, Aveda’s assistant and best friend since childhood, the superheroine who protects San Francisco. But now, Aveda gets hurt one day and she forces Evie to replace her. Except that Evie does not want to, she hates doing that, but accepts because it’s Aveda. This is the side that frustrated me and pissed off throughout the novel. Evie bends over backwards for Aveda and she does everything to please her even though it’s something she can not stand. She never says no or very rarely and it must be said that the super-heroine takes advantage of that. Evie wanted to stay at home? No, Aveda is moving her without even telling her. Evie tries to do everything so that her sister Bea finishes her studies? No, Aveda thinks it’s better to hire her to manage her social networks. Evie asks Aveda to keep her sister safe? No, Aveda makes her drink in her back and then Evie dares to be angry after her? So yes I was frustrated and upset because here at the end it’s just too much.

Well, I think I look very negative, but that’s not totally the case because the style and the ideas are very nice to discover. And then, I really liked the humor of the heroine. But it’s true that I wanted to shake Evie all along and that’s complicated …

    • This trilogy is so good!!!
The whole Evie does what Aveda says and Aveda acting bossy is part of the character growth of both and turns out fine.
      I highly recommend this series!
