Synopsis: Meet Roger. Skilled with words, languages come easily to him. He instinctively understands how the world works through the power of story.
Meet Dodger, his twin. Numbers are her world, her obsession, her everything. All she understands, she does so through the power of math.
Roger and Dodger aren’t exactly human, though they don’t realise it. They aren’t exactly gods, either. Not entirely. Not yet.
Meet Reed, skilled in the alchemical arts like his progenitor before him. Reed created Dodger and her brother. He’s not their father. Not quite. But he has a plan: to raise the twins to the highest power, to ascend with them and claim their authority as his own.
Godhood is attainable. Pray it isn’t attained.
Review: I love Seanan Mcguire, and if you know me a bit, I never resist her novels. So when I found out that she was going to release something different, I threw myself at it! Oh yes, because I was eager to find out what she was going to offer us.
I was really very surprised by the format of this novel. It’s very original and unique: there are different temporalities, a story for children that is spread throughout the story, but also quotes… Really something different.
We discover Roger and Dodger, two extraordinary children: one is a genius of words and the other a genius of numbers. We will see them grow, meet, discover, understand who they are and what they can do all this in the shadow of a man and a woman who constantly monitor them. Life will separate them many times, but it will also bring them together.
It was really a different and interesting novel. I didn’t expect this at all, but I was really curious to find out what was going to happen, how the characters were going to evolve. Everything was fascinating and I had a really good time with the story!
