A Bad Day for Sunshine by Darynda Jones

Sunshine Vicram, Book 1

Synopsis: Sheriff Sunshine Vicram finds her cup o’ joe more than half full when the small village of Del Sol, New Mexico, becomes the center of national attention for a kidnapper on the loose.

Del Sol, New Mexico is known for three things: its fry-an-egg-on-the-cement summers, strong cups of coffee – and, now, a nationwide manhunt? Del Sol native Sunshine Vicram has returned to town as the elected sheriff – thanks to her adorably meddlesome parents who nominated her–and she expects her biggest crime wave to involve an elderly flasher named Doug. But a teenage girl is missing, a kidnapper is on the loose, and all of this is reminding Sunshine why she left Del Sol in the first place. Add to that the trouble at her daughter’s new school, plus and a kidnapped prized rooster named Puff Daddy, and, well, the forecast looks anything but sunny.

But even clouds have their silver linings. This one’s got Levi, Sunshine’s sexy, almost-old-flame, and a fiery-hot US Marshall. With temperatures rising everywhere she turns, Del Sol’s normally cool-minded sheriff is finding herself knee-deep in drama and danger. Can Sunshine face the call of duty – and find the kidnapper who’s terrorizing her beloved hometown – without falling head over high heels in love . . . or worse?

Review: I really liked what I read from the author and I couldn’t wait to dive into this story!

Sunshine experienced a traumatic event when she was younger: she was kidnapped and held for a week. She doesn’t remember what happened, just that someone dropped her off at the hospital and she was pregnant. 15 years has passed and our heroine became sheriff in her hometown. She returns after years of absence and just when she thought she was in a routine job, a friend of her daughter disappears. She must therefore face her past and her childhood crush is more sexy than ever and on top of that, a madman has escaped! One thing is sure, Sunshine will have her work cut out for her.

In this novel we follow different points of view: the one of Sunshine and the one of her daughter Auri. I really enjoyed discovering them both! Sunshine has a lot of humor and it was great to see her repartee. If Auri is different, we get attached very easily to the two women. And then, there is Levi, this enigmatic and dark man that we hope to discover.

I really had a good time with the story, even if Sunshine really pissed me off! Oh, yes, because she is frustrating! Throughout the novel, everything is obvious, but she doesn’t see the truth even though it is like the nose in the middle of the face. I wanted to shake her up a few times to make her realize what was going on. But anyway, it was a good first tome and okay, it upset me, but I’m very curious to read the sequel!

  1. I’m glad you enjoyed this read. And I totally get how you feel about the main character. Isn’t frustrating if things are super obvious, but they just don’t see it?! You’d like to be able to get inside the story and shake the character for real. LOL!.
