Synopsis: In Darkhaven, peace doesn’t last long.

Ayla Nightshade has ruled Darkhaven for three years. With the help of Tomas Caraway, her Captain of the Helm, she has overcome her father’s legacy to find new confidence in herself and her unusual shapeshifting abilities.

Yet three years ago, a discovery was made that could have profound consequences for the Nightshade line: a weapon exists that can harm even the powerful creatures they turn into. And now, that knowledge has fallen into the wrong hands.

An assassin is coming for Ayla, and will stop at nothing to see her dead.

Review: I enjoyed the first volume of the Ayla’s adventures and it’s true that I was curious to see what happened to her after the end of the novel which put her on the throne of Darkhaven. It must be said that the end of the previous novel was not necessarily very gay, and our heroine was left with many consequences to be considered.

Three years have passed, although I confess that I have not really felt it at the beginning the novel and Ayla is always there to govern with the help of her lover, Tomas. But now, the enemies are legion, and it appears that they now know how to put the woman dowm to take her throne. With the characters we have previously discovered, such as Naeve, our heroes will learn that an assassin was sent to kill Ayla. The whole story turns on this fact and more precisely on Tomas’ investigation while following the tracks and it is true that the revelations still managed to surprise me at the end regarding the culprit.

I enjoyed the novel and I had a great time with the story as well as the investigation even if it’s true that I found some passages a little long. Yet this is not really disturbing because the dynamics of the book makes us really want to know more and to know the truth about what is happening. We also focuse on the recruits of the Helm trying to understand who is the killer between them. Thus we take pleasure in discovering the different characters, some with deep resentment toward Darkhaven and it was interesting to see how they evolved gradually.

We also go back in time a few times to understand how our characters got there. In any case, it’s nice to see Ayla, Tomas and Marlon (you will discover who he is) together and see that they finally got to create a life that suits them even if it is true that the determination of Ayla and her desire for freedom are sometimes dangerous.

A nice second volume as the first one.

Ayla Nightshade a gouverné Darkhaven pendant trois ans. Avec l’aide de Tomas Caraway, son capitaine du Helm, elle a réussi à surmonter l’héritage de son père pour trouver une nouvelle confiance en elle et en ses capacités inhabituelles de changes-formes.

Pourtant, il y a trois ans, une découverte a été faite et pourrait avoir des conséquences profondes pour la lignée Nightshade: il existe une arme pouvant nuire à ces créatures puissantes dont elle prend la forme. Et maintenant, ce savoir est tombé dans de mauvaises mains.

Un assassin est venu pour Ayla, et ne reculera devant rien pour la voir morte.

Avis : J’avais apprécié le premier tome des aventures d’Ayla et c’est vrai que j’étais curieuse de voir ce qu’il lui arrivait après la fin du roman qui l’avait mise sur le trône de Darkhaven. Il faut dire que la fin du roman précédent n’était pas forcément très gaie et notre héroïne se retrouvait avec de nombreuses conséquences à prendre en compte.

Voilà trois années ont passé, même si j’avoue que je ne les ai pas vraiment senties en commençant le roman et Ayla est toujours là à gouverner avec l’aide de son amant Tomas. Mais voilà, les ennemis sont légions et il semblerait qu’ils sachent maintenant comment faire tomber la jeune femme pour lui prendre son trône. Grâce aux personnages que nous avons découverts précédemment, tels que Naeve, nos héros apprendront qu’un assassin a été envoyé pour tuer Ayla. Toute l’histoire se tourne d’ailleurs sur ce fait là, sur l’enquête de Tomas, des pistes qu’il suit et c’est vrai qu’on arrive tout de même à être surpris à la fin par le coupable.

J’ai bien aimé le roman et j’ai passé un très bon moment avec l’histoire et la découverte de l’assassin même si c’est vrai que j’ai trouvé certains passages un peu longs. Pourtant, ce n’est pas vraiment dérangeant parce que la dynamique du livre nous donne vraiment envie d’en savoir plus et de connaitre la vérité sur tout ce qu’il se passe. On se concentre d’ailleurs plus particulièrement sur les recrues du Helm, qui s’entraînent et auxquelles on pense que le tueur appartient. C’est ainsi que l’on prend plaisir à découvrir des personnages différents, certains avec des rancœurs profondes face à Darkhaven et c’était intéressant de voir comment ils évoluaient petit à petit.

On repart aussi parfois en arrière dans le temps pour comprendre comment nos personnages en sont arrivés là. Dans tous les cas, c’est agréable de voir Ayla, Tomas et Marlon (vous découvrirez qui il est) ensemble et de voir qu’ils sont finalement arrivés à créer une vie qui leur convient même si c’est vrai que la détermination d’Ayla et son envie de liberté sont parfois dangereuses.

Un joli second tome en tout cas qui est dans la lignée du premier.
