The Dirt on Ninth Grave by Darynda Jones

Charley Davidson, Book 9

Synopsis: In a small village in New York lives Jane Doe, a girl with no memory of who she is or where she came from. So when she is working at a diner and slowly begins to realize she can see dead people, she’s more than a little taken aback. Stranger still are the people entering her life. They seem to know things about her. Things they hide with lies and half-truths. Soon, she senses something far darker. A force that wants to cause her harm, she is sure of it. Her saving grace comes in the form of a new friend she feels she can confide in and the fry cook, a devastatingly handsome man whose smile is breathtaking and touch is scalding. He stays close, and she almost feels safe with him around.

But no one can outrun their past, and the more lies that swirl around her—even from her new and trusted friends—the more disoriented she becomes, until she is confronted by a man who claims to have been sent to kill her. Sent by the darkest force in the universe. A force that absolutely will not stop until she is dead. Thankfully, she has a Rottweiler. But that doesn’t help in her quest to find her identity and recover what she’s lost. That will take all her courage and a touch of the power she feels flowing like electricity through her veins. She almost feels sorry for him. The devil in blue jeans. The disarming fry cook who lies with every breath he takes. She will get to the bottom of what he knows if it kills her. Or him. Either way.

Review: How not to look forward to each new Charley Davidson book when I’ve already read and devoured the first 8 volumes of the saga. The author manages to wherever propel us into her world and to keep us in suspense from beginning to end. Of course, this time, the story is somewhat different from what we usually read, but it does not change the pleasure to find again the characters of the story.

As we knew it at the end of the previous book, Charley is now amnesia and we find her here under the name of Janey. Janey is working in a restaurant as a waitress and somehow tries to discover who she really is and to understand what happened to her (something very difficult elsewhere). Despite her condition, she is always surrounded by her present family or friends evolving around her but never telling her the truth, hoping that she will manage alone to remember what has been taken from her. It is understandable that this is a very frustrating situation for our heroine, especially when she has the ability to determine whether a person is lying or not. So of course, as a new person in this world, we follow Janey and her discovery of the existence of the ghosts (which is pretty funny), but my favorites are the assumptions of our heroine regarding all the capabilities she has now (savant, traveler in time …). And then there’s Reyes … how not to mention him? How can she forget him? We feel that there is an interest from both parties and I admit that I was impressed by the patience of our man in this situation. Yes, he will leave Charley her free arbitrator, whether she chooses him once again or not. It’s not easy but he holds good and wait for her to do a first step towards him. It’s also pretty impressive that despite her lack of memories to see that Charley remains Charley. Without knowing more about the ghosts, or her skills, she does not hesitate to help those who aren’t really nice with her. This is also why we follow a ghost story where babies die strangely before their one year old, or a pretty terrible kidnapping in which the young woman will be involved much more than expected.

It was a nice novel and I think it’s perfect for the fans of the series. Besides, I think we can speak of it as a volume of transition and I’m curious now to be able to get into the next one. Indeed, the plot itself does not advance greatly but it is fun to see everyone again and as well as seeing them evolve together in the hope that the girl will remember them. The end takes an unexpected detour and it’s true that I’m curious to see how such a decision will impact the lives of our little couple.

You will therefore understand that it’s a novel that we follow with pleasure and it makes us wait for the next one!

Neuf Tombes et des Poussières de Darynda Jones

Charley Davidson, Tome 9

Eighth Grave After Dark by Darynda Jones

Charley Davidson,  Book 8

Synopsis: With twelve hellhounds after her, pregnant Charley Davidson takes refuge at the only place she thinks they can’t get to her: the grounds of an abandoned convent. But after months of being cooped up there, Charley is ready to pop. Both metaphorically and literally since she is now roughly the size of a beached whale. Fortunately, a new case has captured her attention, one that involves a murder on the very grounds the team has taken shelter upon. A decades-old murder of the newly-vowed nun she keeps seeing in the shadows is almost enough to pull her out of her doldrums.

Charley’s been forbidden to step foot off the sacred grounds. While the angry hellhounds can’t traverse the consecrated soil, they can lurk just beyond its borders. They have the entire team on edge, especially Reyes. And if Charley didn’t know better, she would swear Reyes is getting sick. He grows hotter with every moment that passes, his heat scorching across her skin every time he’s near, but naturally he swears he’s fine.

While the team searches for clues on the Twelve, Charley just wants answers and is powerless to get them. But the mass of friends they’ve accrued helps. They convince her even more that everyone in her recent life has somehow been drawn to her, as though they were a part of a bigger picture all along. But the good feelings don’t last for long because Charley is about to get the surprise of her crazy, mixed-up, supernatural life….

Review: I always look forward to every great new novel in the Charley Davidson series and it is with pleasure that I immersed myself in this eighth volume. Of course, and as always, it’s a story that we don’t want to leave and we therefore finish it in one go.

Did I already tell you that I love Charley? Yes, because this is actually the case, especially now that she is wearing Beep! It’s always interesting and fun to see how our heroine considers her future child and I confess that I was eager to see her born to know what would happen. Yes, because it’s true that it’s been a while now that we hear about the prophecy and I was curious to see what was going to happen. In her condition, Charley has to be careful, but while everyone is trying to protect her, to hide from her some secrets and to do everything for her to be safe, it is too much for her! Fortunately, the Cookie’s wedding will bring a bit animation, as well as two surveys … and then we also have Reyes. The only problem is that Charley is determined to understand what everyone is hiding and to act as she wishes, even if it means leaving her Covent incognito to do what she has to do despite the problems (and this meaning even a small go to hell, yes!).

I felt like less things were going on in this new volume but it’s not a concern, no, because the story is very informative. This is only a feeling that remains throughout the chapters. We follow the late pregnancy of our heroine, the Reyes problems that Charley also gradually discovers (I must say that he is very good at keeping his thoughts). Darynda will also give us some revelations that we were waiting for a long time! Oh yes, because we discover the truth about our reaper, her purpose, her true identity, the means of the presence of Mr. Wrong and the hellhounds and I confess that I was not expecting it at all, it was a real surprise. Yes even after eight volumes, the author still manages to surprise us. But that’s not all, because the end leaves us with many other problems and I admit that I’m really curious to find out how they will manage all that.

So yes, as always, I had a great time with the story, we find all the characters that we love and more … did I mention that we see Donovan again? Yes, Yes! He is there and that was also a real surprise and a pleasure of course! I think that I can say once again that the fans of the series will not be disappointed. A new great time and I’m curious to read more with the next volume.

Huit Tombes dans la Nuit de Darynda Jones

Charley Davidson, Tome 8

Blog Tour: Seventh Grave and No Body by Darynda Jones + Giveaway

Charley Davidson, Book 7

Synopsis: Twelve. Twelve of the deadliest beasts ever forged in the fires of hell have escaped onto our plane, and they want nothing more than to rip out the jugular of Charley Davidson and serve her lifeless, mangled body to Satan for dinner. So there’s that. But Charley has more on her plate than a mob of testy hellhounds. For one thing, her father has disappeared, and the more she retraces his last steps, the more she learns he was conducting an investigation of his own, one that has Charley questioning everything she’s ever known about him. Add to that an ex-BFF who is haunting her night and day, a rash of suicides that has authorities baffled, and a drop-dead sexy fiancé who has attracted the attentions of a local celebrity, and Charley is not having the best week of her life.

A tad north of hell, a hop, skip, and a jump past the realm of eternity, is a little place called Earth, and Charley Davidson, grim reaper extraordinaire, is determined to do everything in her power to protect it.

We’re doomed.

Review: I was so eager to start this new Charley Davidson adventure. I always look forward to each new volume and I was more than delighted to finally get my hands on it. I admit that before starting the story, I’m always a little anxious to be disappointed, not knowing where the author would lead us this time. But what a mistake! We must never doubt Darynda Jones, she has a fabulous talent and it was a treat to discover this novel as always. I find it hard to realize that we are already in the seventh volume … Yes! 7 already! And they are all as good as the previous ones and I hope we’ll still have many more.

So we meet again our dear Charley who will have many things to do with all the things that fall on her throughout the novel. Oh yeah! In addition to the investigations with Agent Carlson, she must also take care of Jessica who seems to want to make her life a living hell by constantly complaining about her condition, bodies disappear in cemeteries, disappearances occurr under the same conditions, the hellhounds are on her trail, she must manage a lack of caffeine and Charley must also take into account Beep. Who is Beep? This is the name that she has decided to give to the child that she is bearing and I must tell you that it makes some pretty funny situations (well, as soon as she named something, the situations quickly become funny). It’s pretty interesting to see how she is changing because of the child, to see that she is already concerned about the mother she will be, she is afraid of not being up to that in fact. It must be said that she decides to start with a goldfish, thinking that if she can keep it alive, then it would be a good step forward to an unborn baby. Yet it is not her condition that will prevent our heroine to get into dangerous situations! Oh no, and I can tell you that Reyes does not enjoy this situation at all! Because he is determined to protect her at all times. Yet it is without thinking about the determination of Charley to confront events alone. I really loved seeing them both arguing about it, and even if we know as much as our heroine that Reyes is right, this does not prevent her from doing it again. But Charley would not be Charley without her determination and lack of consideration of the danger or her desire to upset Reyes.

We learn a lot about our reaper in this novel and I admit that I was surprised more than once. I did not expect that the author would lead us in that direction, but what a great idea! We thus discover more about her history, status and even her powers. She manages to make unimaginable things and I loved to learn more about what she was capable of. Of course, it’s also the only one who is good at getting into completely catastrophic situations. But it’s also why we love our Charley, she does not hesitate to do anything to protect those in need. This young woman has a heart of gold! I must say that this is one of the things that Reyes has troubles understanding sometimes. I was pretty sad to see what he really thought in relation to his position towards Charley. I would not have really thought it possible, but it is even more emphasized at the end of the story in the chapter from his point of view. We realize in this novel about the challenges he has to live with as best as he can every days. Yet it was touching to see that he was able to share his problems with Charley for her to understand what was going on (and so she doesn’t imagine things, yes because she is also very good at that).

I was quite surprised but we also learn a lot about the new demon that we have met in the previous volume, Osh, who will be much more prevalent throughout the story than I thought. I love the character and it was a treat to see him so much here. We suspect that he has a hidden agenda, but I’m curious to see what it is exactly.

I have something else to add. It’s true we expect a little bit such an end, but it is also true that the whole thing was very moving and I did not expect that conclusion. A rather sad end but one opening up many other ways for the following novels. I am also more than impatient for the release of the next volume (yes again! It really is a vicious circle! It’s hellish, we always want more!). But in any case you’ll understand that I was completely conquered and I am delighted with this novel. The author has once again proposed a novel at the height of her talent. I can only advise you to dive into the series if you have not yet tried it. I’m sure you will love it and you will fall in love with all the characters, including Charley and Reyes!

Excerpt:

As Cookie and Gemma planned my wedding, a job I did not envy in the least, I watched Reyes. I tried to single out his emotions, but there was so much blisteringly raw lust in the room, I couldn’t get past it all. Damn him and his sexual tractor beam.

A giggle floated toward me, and I saw the woman’s head tilt back again. Clearly, Reyes was slapping on the charm, but why? Was this about an interview? He’d been asked a dozen times for one and never gave any of the other reporters the time of day. Even 60 Minutes had wanted to do a story on him and got the door slammed in their face. But this woman came in, pinned him with a glittering smile, and he caved?

That was not like Reyes.

“I need a pretzel,” I said, ignoring my food.

Before any of them could say anything, I rose and walked to the bar, which put me a few precious feet closer to the happy couple. If he were ever to break up with me, I would so be that stalker ex- girlfriend who stole his underwear and hid in the hedges outside his bedroom window. But finally I had a clear path and could read Reyes’s emotions. Only I still couldn’t feel him.

He was blocking me!

Sixth Grave on the Edge by Darynda Jones + Giveaway

Charley Davidson, Book 6

Synopsis: Few things in life can come between a grim reaper and her coffee, but the sexy, sultry son of Satan is one of them. Now that Reyes Farrow has asked for her hand, Charley Davidson feels it’s time to learn more about his past, but Reyes is reluctant to open up. When the official FBI file of his childhood abduction lands in her lap, Charley decides to go behind her mysterious beau’s back and conduct her own investigation. Because what could go wrong?

Unfortunately, another case has fallen into her lap—one with dangerous implications. Some very insistent men want Charley to hunt down a witness who is scheduled to testify against their boss, a major player in the local crime syndicate. If Charley doesn’t come up with an address in 48 hours, the people closest to her will start to disappear.

Add to that a desperate man in search of the soul he lost in a card game, a dogged mother determined to find the ghost of her son, and a beautiful, young Deaf boy haunted by his new ability to see the departed as clearly as he sees the living, and Charley has her hands full. The fact that Reyes has caught on to her latest venture only adds fuel to the inferno that he is. Good thing for Charley she’s used to multi-tasking and always up for a challenge…especially when that challenge comes in the form of Reyes Farrow.

Review: Ah this series … each volume is always a delight to read and I admit that I was really excited to discover this new novel featuring our dear Charley. And it is true that as soon as I got it, I rushed to get into the story.

I admit that by starting the novel, I did not expect to see Charley in so many situations at once and with that many problems. Yes because it must be said, there are lots of them this time. Between Reyes who decided that he had to protect her at all times and who is looking forward to the answer to his marriage proposal. It was something very funny indeed, as he is always looking for her answer and he is full of imagination! But in addition to this, our dear heroine is determined to understand the Reyes past, even if he wants to tell her the truth or not and I must say that she will discover a much more complicated story than she would have thought. Of course we also have our ghosts, between a naked man who seems determined to follow her without saying anything and the ghost of her apartment she begins to understand. I admit that I’m curious about it since the beginning of the series and we manage to discover a little more about him. No, we do not have any real answers, but it is true that I am impatient to discover the truth about him. Anything else? Oh yes because we still have many things. Charley ‘s father seems determined to act in relation to his daughter, and again, despite the questions we have, we do not have the answers. In addition, a crime lord decided that the young woman had to find a witness who is supposed to drop him, blackmailing her to kill one of her friends. Problem? It seems that no one of her friends has recently disappeared. I confess to that point that I immediately knew who it was, but I did not expect at all the purpose of the story. But we also have some revelations about Angel, the encounter with a new entity, new revelations about Charley and another threat from the underworld on the way. So yes, our reaper will have a lot to manage with and we’re brought in a wild ride!

I really enjoyed seeing so many things in the novel and Charley will discover here that her actions have sometimes serious consequences. She will have to make choices that can change her future and that of the world. As always, our heroine comes perfectly to get in fairly catastrophic situations while she always has the best intentions, but as Reyes said, sometimes she is just too nice to people she does not know about. As for Reyes, it was really interesting to see him trying to lead a normal life while watching the young woman, but I must say he is always behind what is happening. We are introduced to some new characters in this sixth installment and I’m sure we will see them very quickly and take an important place in the following volumes.

To conclude, I can tell you that I still had a great time even if maybe the others were a little better and I can only recommend you to start the series, you will melt for Reyes and you will love Charley!
