Fourth grave beneath my feet (Charley Davidson, 4) – Darynda Jones

Sometimes being the grim reaper really is that. Grim. And since Charley’s last case went so awry, she has taken a couple months off to wallow in the wonders of self-pity. But when a woman shows up on her doorstep convinced someone is trying to kill her, Charley has to force herself to rise above. Or at least get dressed. She quickly realizes something is amiss when everyone the woman knows swears she’s insane. The more they refute the woman’s story, the more Charley believes it.

In the meantime, the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, has been cleared of all charges. He is out of prison and out of Charley’s life, as per her wishes and several perfectly timed death threats. But his absence has put a serious crimp in her sex life. While there are other things to consider, like the fact that the city of Albuquerque has been taken hostage by an arsonist, Charley is having a difficult time staying away. Especially when it looks like Reyes may be involved. Just when life was returning to normal, Charley is thrust back into the world of crime, punishment, and the devil in blue jeans.

Pouvez-vous vous présenter en quelques mots ?
Bien sûr, Je m’appelle Darynda Jones et je suis l’auteure de la série Charley Davidson, une histoire de fantaisie urbaine/mystère paranormal au sujet d’une femme, détective privé qui est née en tant que faucheuse, et comme Charley, je vis au Nouveau Mexique.
J’écris depuis des années et j’ai vendu mon premier livre Première tombe sur la droite en 2009.
 
Combien de livres comptez-vous écrire pour la série ?
C’est une série en cours, donc je ne sais pas vraiment combien il y en aura. J’adore écrire sur Charley !
Le premier livre a-t-il été difficile à écrire ? Combien de temps cela a-t-il pris ?
Le premier a été difficile de par le fait que j’ai essayé d’écrire différemment de ce que je faisais normalement. Je commence toujours par un contour (trois en fait), et j’écris ensuite à partir de ça. J’ai essayé de tout écrire à partir du premier chapitre, mais ça n’a pas fonctionné pour moi. Je me suis retrouvée bloquée au 6ème chapitre que j’ai abandonné durant plus d’un an. A la fin, il m’a fallu presque deux ans pour l’écrire. Pour faire une comparaison, il m’a fallu 9 mois pour écrire le troisième livre de la série, Third Grave Dead Ahead.

Cela devient-il plus facile avec les livres suivants ?
Pas si facile étant donné que je n’arrive pas à gérer les délais. Je dois écrire et cela même quand je ne suis pas d’humeur. Hahaha. Et j’ai appris qu’écrire des suites est finalement un peu plus dur en de nombreux points. Vous devez, par exemple, trouver comment installer la trame de fond sans ennuyer le lecteur. C’est beaucoup plus difficile que ce que j’avais pensé.
Comment trouvez-vous vos titres ? Les aviez-vous tous imaginés quand vous avez commencé la série ou vous prenez-vous la tête à chaque fois ?
Les trois premiers sont venus assez rapidement. C’est assez amusant parce que j’essayais justement d’avoir quelque chose de drôle pour le premier et ça m’est juste tombé dessus un jour, Première tombe sur la droite. Les deux d’après étaient un jeu d’enfant.
Mais après ceux-ci, qui sont assez légers, je voulais quelque chose de plus sombre. Mon éditeur n’a pas été vraiment d’accord, donc après Fourth Grave beneath my Feet, qui est un peu plus sérieux, nous reviendrons sur des titres plus légers. Le prochain livre est déjà nommé Fifth Grave Past the Light.
Comment en êtes-vous venue à écrire des livres de fantaisie urbaine/romance paranormale ? Un autre genre vous plait-il ?
Promis, TOUS les genres me plaisent ! J’ai commencé des manuscrits pour à peu près tous les genres possibles. J’écris surtout du paranormal, de la science-fiction, du young adult, et j’ai même quelque manuscrits commencés (non finis) de romance historique. Je les aime tous. J’ai aussi une histoire d’espions et une sur un couple d’assassins quelque part.
Vos personnages sont-ils inspirés de personnes que vous connaissez ?
Pas généralement, bien que je puisse dire que la meilleure amie de Charley, Cookie, est basée physiquement sur une amie à moi. Je fais ça parfois, seulement pour une référence physique. J’aime combiner les gens aussi. Comme peut-être les traits physiques de quelqu’un avec le sens de l’humour de quelqu’un d’autre.
Y-a-t-il eu un personnage plus difficile à écrire que les autres ?
La chose la plus difficile à écrire n’est pas pour moi un personnage, mais l’attraction entre Charley et celui qu’elle apprécie, Reyes. Reyes est physiquement tellement parfait et si gentil parfois pour ensuite être un abruti, il est alors important de le faire séduisant et digne de l’amour de Charley même quand il est en colère ou imbécile. Ce n’est pas toujours facile et je ne suis pas sûre d’y arriver à chaque fois.
Qui est votre personnage préféré dans la série ?
Probablement Charley, j’adore sa relation avec sa meilleure amie/assistante Cookie. Cookie est toujours géniale à écrire. Ensuite il y a Reyes. Si je devais vivre sur une ile déserte, j’irais avec Reyes. J
Avez-vous déjà d’autres plans pour une future série ? Ou est-ce top secret ?
Et bien, j’ai une série YA qui sort en Octobre aux US. Le premier est appelé Death and the Girl Next Door et c’est au sujet d’une fille dont la vie va radicalement changer quand l’Ange de la Mort fait sa rentrée au lycée dans sa petite ville. Heck, à qui vais-je faire croire ça ? Je travaille toujours sur de nouvelles séries. C’est vrai j’en ai au moins 17 maintenant. Je dois juste décider laquelle je veux finir en premier.
Pouvez-vous nous dire un petit quelque chose au sujet du quatrième livre ? Et au sujet de votre livre young adult ?
Bien sûr, voici quelques petites choses :
FOURTH GRAVE BENEATH MY FEET
Parfois être une faucheuse n’est que ça. Sinistre. Et depuis que la dernière affaire de Charley est allée de travers, elle a pris quelques mois de vacances pour se vautrer dans les merveilles de l’apitoiement sur soi-même. Mais quand une femme se présente devant sa porte, persuadée que quelqu’un essaie de la tuer, Charley est forcée de se redresser. Ou du moins de s’habiller. Elle réalise rapidement qu’il lui manque quelque chose quand tous les amis de cette femme lui jurent qu’elle est folle. Et plus ils réfutent l’histoire de la jeune femme, plus Charley y croit.
En même temps, le sexy, sensuel fils de Satan, Reyes Farrow, a été innocenté. Il est libéré de prison et sorti de la vie de Charley, selon ses souhaits et menaces de mort parfaitement synchronisés. Mais son absence freine particulièrement sa vie sexuelle. Alors qu’il y a d’autres choses à considérer, comme le fait que la ville d’Albuquerque ait été prise en otage par un pyromane, Charley a du mal à rester loin de tout cela. Surtout quand il semble que Reyes y est pour quelque chose. Et quand la vie revient à la normale, Charley se retrouve à nouveau dans le monde du crime, la peine, et du diable en jean.
DEATH AND THE GIRL NEXT DOOR
Il y a dix ans, les parents de Lorelei disparaissaient sans laisser de traces, mais elle commence seulement à accepter le fait qu’ils ne reviendront pas. La vie doit continuer. Elle a ses grands-parents et le soutien de ses meilleurs amis, de plus, le lycée n’est pas aussi difficile qu’elle l’aurait pensé.
Jusqu’au jour où le solitaire de l’école, Cameron Lusk, commence à la suivre, apparaissant dès qu’elle s’y attend le moins, attendant dehors dans l’ombre, nuit après nuit. Les choses deviennent plus compliquées quand un nouveau garçon – le terrifiant, coriace, sexy Jared Kovach – arrive à l’école. Cameron et Jared se détestent immédiatement et Lorelei semble être la raison de leur animosité.
Que sait Jared au sujet de ses parents ? Pourquoi Cameron dit-il à Jared qu’il ne peut avoir Lorelei ? Et que vont-ils faire quand la Mort viendra elle-même ?
A-t-il été difficile de créer Reyes ? Parce que je pense que maintenant tout le monde en veut un.
Haha ! Eh bien, encore une fois, je pense que la chose la plus difficile à été de faire de lui quelqu’un de sexy, coléreux et vulnérable en même temps. Mais j’avais une idée très précise de lui en tête depuis le début, donc pas si difficile, seulement pour le maintenir. Donc, oui, il a besoin de beaucoup de maintenance.
Avez-vous eu besoin de faire beaucoup de recherches pour vos livres ?
Pas du tout. Je casse à peu près toutes les règles, alors j’ai inventé beaucoup de choses. Mes recherches se sont centrées sur le travail de détective privé, ce qu’ils peuvent ou ne pas faire selon la loi. Certaines choses m’ont surpris.
Avez-vous un auteur favori ? Ou un livre ?
J’ai BEAUCOUP d’auteurs favoris et encore plus de livres que j’adore. Au sommet de ma liste, on trouve l’auteur J.R. Ward, Jeaniene Frost, Jacquelin Franck, Julian Quinn, Stephen Hunter, Neil Gaiman, Molly Harper… Et je pourrais encore continuer comme ça. Deux de mes meilleurs livres de tous les temps sont LOVER AWAKENED de J.R. Ward et THE DUKE AND I de Julia Quinn. Des livres exceptionnels !
Ou préférez-vous écrire ?
Sur mon bureau. En fait, j’ai du mal à écrire autre part à présent.
Vos livres vont sortir en France. Vous voyez-vous rencontrer vos fans Français un jour ?
Dans mes rêves, je le fais sûrement ! J’ADORERAIS venir en France !!!

Interview with Darynda Jones for her Charley Davidson series

We’re very happy today to have on the blog the author of the Charley Davidson series: Darynda Jones. The fourth book of the series will be released for October, like the first book of her new YA series: Death and the Girld next door.

Can you introduce yourself in a few words?
Absolutely! My name is Darynda Jones and I write the Charley Davidson series, a paranormal mystery/urban fantasy story about a female private investigator who was born the grim reaper, and like Charley, I live in New Mexico. I’ve been writing for many years and sold my debut book, First Grave on the Right in 2009.
How many books do you intend to write for this series?
It is an ongoing series, so I’m not sure how many there will be. I am hoping it will continue for a few more years. I love writing about Charley!
Was it difficult to write the first book? How long did it take?
The first book was only difficult because I tried to write “differently” than I normally do. I always start with an outline (three actually), and then I just kind of write all over the place. I tried to write it from chapter one straight through and it didn’t work for me. I got stuck on chapter 6 and just left it there for over a year. In the end, it took me two years to write it. As a comparison, it only took me 9 weeks to write the third book in the series, Third Grave Dead Ahead.
Did it become easier with the following books?
Not so much easier because I’m not on deadlines. I have to write even when I am not in the mood. Hahaha. And I’ve learned that writing sequels is actually a bit harder in some ways. For example, you have to figure out how to bring in all that backstory without boring your reader to tears. It’s much more difficult that I was hoping it would be.
How do you find your titles? Did you imagine them all when you started the series or do you brainstorm each time?
The first three I came up with pretty quickly. It’s funny because I was just trying to come up with something kind of fun for the first one and it just hit me one day, First Grave on the Right. The next two were a breeze.
But after those, which are very light, I wanted to go a bit darker. My editor does not want me to though, so after Fourth Grave Beneath my Feet, which is a bit more serious, we are going back to the lighter titles. The next book is already titled Fifth Grave Past the Light.
How did you end up writing Urban Fantasy/ paranormal romance books? Is there any other genre that appeal to you?
I swear, EVERY genre appeals to me! I have manuscripts started in every genre under the sun. Mostly I write in paranormal, science fiction, young adult, and I even have several manuscripts started (and one completed) in historical romance. I love it all. I even have a spy story and a couple of assassin stories in there somewhere.
Does the inspiration for the characters come from people you know?
Not generally, though I will say that Charley’s best friend, Cookie, was physically based on a friend of mine. I will do that sometimes, just for a reference for physical characteristics. I like to combine people too. Like maybe the physical traits of someone combined with the sence of humor from someone else.
Is there a character more difficult than the others to write?
Probably the most difficult for me to write is not necessarily the character, but the attraction between Charley and her love interest Reyes. Reyes is so physically perfect and such a sweetheart at times and then he’s just a jerk at others, so it’s important for me to make him attractive and worthy of Charley’s love even when he’s angry or being a jerk. That is not always easy and I’m not sure I always pull it off.
Who is your favorite character in the series?
Probably Charley, though I do love her relationship with her best friend/assistant Cookie. Cookie is fun to write, too. And then there’s Reyes. If I was stranded on a desert island, I’d have to go with Reyes. 🙂
Have you already other plans for future series? Or is it top secret?
Well, I have a YA series coming out in the US in October. The first one is called Death and the Girl Next Door and it’s about a girl whose life is irrevocably changed when the Angel of Death starts high school in her small town. I’m also working on two more YA series. Heck, who am I kidding? I’m always working on new series. I swear I have about 17 started right now. I just have to decide which one to finish first.

What does Jared know about her parents?  Why does Cameron tell Jared he can’t have Lorelei?  And what will any of them do when Death comes knocking for real?
Was it difficult to create Reyes? Because, well, now I think everyone wants one.
Haha! Well, again, I think the difficult part is making him hot, sexy, angry, and yet vulnerable all at the same time. But I had a very clear picture of him in my mind from the start, so not difficult to create, just to maintain. So, yeah, he’s high maintenance.
Did you need to do a lot of researches for your books?
Not much at all. I pretty much broke all the rules, so I made up a lot of stuff as I went. Mostly my research had to do with being a private investigator, what they can and cannot do by law. Some of it surprised me.
Do you have a favorite author? Or a favorite book?
I have MANY favorite authors and and even more favorite books. At the top of my list are writers like JR Ward, Jeaniene Frost, Jacquelyn Frank, Julia Quinn, Stephen Hunter, Neil Gaiman, Molly Harper…. I could go on and on. Two of my all-time favorite books are LOVER AWAKENED by JR Ward and THE DUKE AND I by Julia Quinn. Outstanding books!
Where is your favorite place to write?
At my desk. In fact, I have a hard time writing anywhere else anymore.
Your books are going to be released in France, do you see yourself meeting your French fans one day?
In my dreams, I most certainly do! I would LOVE to go to France!!!

Thank you so much for having me! I have to say, I was thrilled when the first three in the Charley Davidson series sold to Milady/Bragelonne in France. What an honor. While I don’t have a release date yet, I am hoping they come out soon. And I really think I should do some kind of book tour, too. You know, to promote. 🙂 
Charlotte “Charley” Davidson is a private investigator who just happened to be born the grim reaper. Because of her supernatural status, she is often called upon to solve cases for both the living and the dead. It makes for an interesting day. She is shoved into one messy situation after another and she handles it with more sass and bravado than she probably has a right to.

In the meantime, she is dealing with intensely hot dreams about an entity who has been following her all her life. The entity seems vaguely familiar, and in book one of the series, FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT, Charley sets out to figure out exactly what, or who, the entity is. But she soon finds out he is surrounded by danger and a darkness that she never dreamed really existed. Falling in love with him would be a mistake, but Charley never claimed to be the most sensible girl in designer underwear.

Merci beaucoup de m’avoir invitée ! Je dois dire que j’étais ravie quand j’ai su que les trois premiers tomes de la série de Charley Davidson avaient été vendus à Milady/Bragelonne en France. Quel honneur ! Bien que je ne sache pas encore pour quand ils sont prévus, j’espère que ce sera pour bientôt. Et je pense aussi qu’il peut être intéressant que je fasse un « book tour ». Vous savez pour promouvoir un peu. 🙂
 
Charlotte “Charley’ Davidson est une détective privée qui apparait être aussi une faucheuse. A cause de son statut surnaturel, elle est souvent appelée à résoudre des affaires à la fois pour les morts et les vivants. Cela lui fait des journées très mouvementées. Elle arrive à se mettre dans des situations plus compliquées, les unes après les autres et elle s’en sort avec plus de toupet et bravade qu’elle ne devrait pouvoir le faire.
En même temps, elle doit s’occuper de rêves très sensuels au sujet d’une entité qui l’a suivie tout au long de sa vie. Cette entité semble vaguement familière, et dans le premier livre de la série, FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT, Charley décide de trouver exactement ce qu’est ou qui est cette entité. Mais elle va très vite s’apercevoir qu’«il» est entouré de beaucoup de danger et de noirceur, des choses qu’elle n’aurait jamais pensé pouvoir exister. Tomber amoureuse de lui pourrait être une erreur, mais Charley n’a jamais prétendu être une fille sensible qui porte des sous-vêtements de créateurs.
J’espère que vous aimerez la série autant que j’ai apprécié l’écrire. Merci encore de m’avoir invitée.

Charley Davidson, Book 2

Synopsis : When Charley is rudely awakened in the middle of the night by her best friend who tells her to get dressed quickly and tosses clothes out of the closet at her, she can’t help but wonder what Cookie’s up to. Leather scrunch boots with a floral miniskirt? Together? Seriously? Cookie explains that a friend of hers named Mimi disappeared five days earlier and that she just got a text from her setting up a meet at a coffee shop downtown. They show up at the coffee shop, but no Mimi. But Charley finds a message on the bathroom wall. Mimi left a clue, a woman’s name. Mimi’s husband explains that his wife had been acting strange since she found out an old friend of hers from high school had been found murdered a couple weeks prior. The same woman Mimi had named in her message.

Meanwhile, Reyes Alexander Farrow (otherwise known as the Son of Satan. Yes. Literally) has left his corporeal body and is haunting Charley. He’s left his body because he’s being tortured by demons who want to lure Charley closer. But Reyes can’t let that happen. Because if the demons get to Charley, they’ll have a portal to heaven. And if they have a portal to heaven…well, let’s just say it wouldn’t be pretty. Can Charley handle hot nights with Reyes and even hotter days tracking down a missing woman? Will Cookie ever get a true fashion sense? And is there enough coffee and chocolate in the world to fuel them as they do?

Review : I’ve just loved this novel, even more than the first one. I think the synopsis allows us to understand very well what will happen this time, but there are so much more too ! We can follow the adventures of Charley who, we have really well understood, doesn’t have any luck ! So even if some men break in her apartment a lot of times with guns, true to form, she isn’t afraid and doesn’t really care about what could happen.

In this second novel, we will learn a little more about Cookie, who follows our heroine all along the story. As she was less present in the first one, we can discover a lovely character who could do anything to help her friends. On the other hand Garrett was a little less present in this one, but he will be always here to irritate Charley and of course to save her too.
And Reyes… Ah Reyes ! It’s a pleasure to find him here one more time ! He is always the same, but it was without counting on the Charley’s determination who only thinks about one thing : to find his body before he could die. A trap ? And so what ? She doesn’t care about it, her only goal in to keep Reyes alive as much as she can. But it’s more complicated to do that when this man does everything in his power to interfere in her plan. Even if he had to treat her friends life to succeed.
The plot is amazing all along the story and it was very difficult to stop reading the novel. Indeed, once we start it, we just want to know more ! All the events happen the ones after the others, and therefore we want to know what will happen next. I was surprised all along the book, about her father, the murder’s culprit, or even about where Reyes was. The writing style was slight and also very serious sometimes, it was a great mix. Charley is a heroine we can only love, we understand her really fast, her feelings, her fears. It was a terrible end, I just can’t wait to read the third book ! I want it now !!!!

Charley Davidson, Tome 2

Résumé (traduction personnelle) : Quand Charley est réveillée en pleine nuit par sa meilleure amie qui lui demande de s’habiller au plus vite, en lui balançant des vêtements à la figure, elle ne peut que se demander ce que veut Cookie. Une veste en cuir avec une mini jupe fleurie ? Ensemble? Sérieusement ?

Après avoir emmené Charley dehors et essayé en vain de faire rentrer ses affaires dans le coffre – Cookie lui explique finalement que son amie Mimi a disparu depuis cinq jours et qu’elle vient de lui envoyer un texto pour la retrouver dans un café en ville. Elles s’y rendent donc, mais pas de Mimi en vue. Après une petite enquête, Charley découvre un message sur le mur des toilettes. Mimi a laissé un indice, le nom d’une femme. Elles se dirigent ensuite vers le parking pour être braquées par un mari hystérique. Après quelques explications, et quelques exercices de respiration, le mari, alias Warren Jacobs, engage Charley pour l’aider à retrouver sa femme. Il lui explique que sa femme agissait de manière étrange depuis qu’elle avait découvert qu’une ancienne amie de son lycée a été retrouvée assassinée quelques semaines auparavant. La même femme dont Mimi parle dans son message.

Pendant ce temps, Reyes Alexander Farrow (ou aussi connu en tant que le Fils de Satan. Oui. Littéralement) a quitté son enveloppe corporelle et hante Charley. En effet, il est torturé par des démons qui veulent découvrir où est Charley. Mais Reyes ne peut pas laisser faire ça. Car si les démons la trouvent, ils auront accès au portail menant au paradis. Et si c’est le cas… hé bien, on peut dire que ça ne serait pas joli joli. Charley peut-elle jongler entre ses nuits avec Reyes et des journées encore plus dures à traquer une jeune femme disparue ? Est-ce que Cookie pourra-t-elle développer un sens pour la mode ? Et y aura-t-il assez de café et de chocolat dans le monde pour elles ?
Avis : J’ai juste adoré ce tome, encore plus que le précédent je dois dire. Je pense que le résumé nous explique bien tout ce qu’il va se passer dans cette histoire, mais il y a aussi tellement plus ! On retrouve avec un grand plaisir notre Charley, qui il faut le dire et ça on l’a bien compris, n’a jamais vraiment de chance. Alors même si des gens entrent par effraction chez elle avec des armes, elle reste égale à elle même sans même avoir peur de ce qui pourrait lui arriver.
Dans ce deuxième tome on en apprend beaucoup plus sur Cookie qui suit notre héroïne tout au long de l’histoire. Comme c’était moins le cas dans le premier, on découvre un personnage qu’on ne peut qu’apprécier et qui serait prête à tout pour aider ses amis. Garrett est un peu moins présent quant à lui mais toujours au rendez vous pour énerver Charley et la sauver, bien entendu ! Et Reyes… Ah Reyes ! Quel plaisir de le retrouver ici une fois de plus ! Toujours le même, mais c’était sans compter sur la détermination de Charley qui ne pense qu’à une chose : retrouver son corps avant qu’il ne meure. Un piège ? Et alors, elle n’en a que faire, son seul objectif étant de garder Reyes en vie le plus longtemps possible. Mais c’est plus compliqué à faire quand ce dernier fait tout son possible pour qu’elle n’y arrive pas, jusqu’à menacer quiconque voudrait bien l’aider.
L’intrigue nous tient en haleine durant tout le livre et il est difficile de s’arrêter de lire. En effet, une fois commencé on ne peut qu’avoir envie de connaître la suite ! Tous les évènements se précipitent les uns à la suite des autres, nous donnant toujours envie d’en savoir plus. J’ai été surprise tout au long de l’histoire, que ça soit au sujet de son père, du coupable des meurtres ou encore de l’endroit où se cachait Reyes. Le ton de l’histoire peut parfois être léger, comme très sérieux, nous permettant d’avoir un bon mélange. Charley est une héroïne à laquelle on ne peut que s’attacher, on se met très vite dans la peau du personnage, partageant avec elle ses sentiments et ses peurs. Et cette fin me laisse en manque ! Il me faut le tome 3 d’urgence ! J’ai vraiment hâte de pouvoir le lire ! C’est un gros coup de coeur !
