Review: And here is the second volume by J.T. Geissinger. I must say that I was really curious to get into this new one. Although I loved the first book about Jenna, I was eager to follow Morgan this time. It’s interesting because she is a very complex character and it was really nice to discover her a little more.
 
The novel continues immediately after the first one, Jenna is now the Queen but Morgan is always accused of high treason after what she did. And there is only one solution to that, as for all crimes: death. But our heroine perfectly understands this choice and even if she doesn’t want to die, she accepts it without rebelling. But luckily for her, Jenna who greatly appreciates her, has another solution on the day of the sentence. Morgan must go to Rome to find out who the Expurgari are and to kill them once and for all to destroy the threat. But for this, she must be accompanied by Xander, a heartless assassin who will take care of her if she fails. However, their arrival in Rome will totally be turned upside down when they encounter a not identified Ikati who intends to meddle in their affairs.
 
This novel is full of surprises and I really enjoyed following this new couple so different from the first one. It was cute to discover these two characters and see their feelings rising slowly and changing. Well, they both flatly refuse to deal with what they feel, knowing how all this will end. Both of them are complex and interesting, and we take pleasure in understanding them throughout the story. Morgan keeps her composure under all circumstances, and as the first volume presented her to us, she is one of the most courageous and honest woman. A very good point for her.
 
We immediately wonder who are these Ikati in Rome and what they will bring to the story. But we have our answers all along the story, we even open up new possibilities for the rest of the story. We remained fairly confined to the same places in the first volume, and especially the tribe, it was interesting to see other places and I hope it will continue like that.
 

This new novel was therefore a beautiful surprise as the first one. A very good volume with a love story that we enjoy as soon as we start the book.

Mais il y a une lueur d’espoir. Merci à son amitié avec Jenna, la nouvelle reine des Ikati, Morgan possède une dernière chance pour prouver sa loyauté. Elle doit découvrir et infiltrer le QG des Expurgari, l’ancien ennemi des Ikati, pour les détruire une fois pour toutes. Le souci ? Elle a seulement quinze jours pour compléter sa mission et doit être accompagnée par Xander Luna, l’assassin le plus craint de la tribu. Si Morgan échoue, sa vie en sera le prix. Comme Xander est aussi mortel que loyal, personne – pas même cette belle et passionnée rebelle – ne pourra le distraire de cette mission. Mais alors qu’ils se dirigent vers le cœur de l’Italie, l’attraction entre eux devient indéniable. Soudain la justice n’est pas la chose la plus importante : l’amour l’est aussi.
Avis :  Et voici le deuxième tome de J.T. Geissinger. Je dois dire que j’étais vraiment curieuse de me lancer dans la lecture. Bien qu’ayant adoré Jenna dans le premier tome, j’avais hâte de pouvoir suivre Morgan cette fois ci. Il faut dire que c’est un personnage très complexe qu’il est agréable de vraiment découvrir.

Le roman se poursuit tout de suite après la fin du premier, Jenna est devenue Reine mais Morgan est toujours accusée de haute trahison après ce qu’elle a fait. Il ne reste qu’une seule solution, comme pour chaque crime de la sorte, la mort. Mais notre héroïne comprend ce choix et même si elle n’a aucune envie de mourir, elle s’y conforme sans se rebeller. Mais heureusement pour elle, Jenna qui l’apprécie énormément, trouve une autre solution le jour même de la sentence. Morgan doit ainsi se rendre à Rome pour découvrir qui sont les Expurgari et pour les tuer une fois pour toutes et anéantir la menace. Mais pour cela, elle se doit d’être accompagnée par Xander, un assassin sans cœur qui devra s’occuper de la tuer si elle échoue. Cependant, leur arrivée à Rome sera totalement chamboulée quand ils rencontrent un Ikati non recensé qui compte bien se mêler de leurs affaires.
Ce roman est plein de bonnes surprises et j’ai beaucoup apprécié de suivre ce nouveau couple si différent du premier. C’était mignon de découvrir ces deux personnages et de voir leurs sentiments naître doucement, ainsi que l’apaisement de leur méfiance. Il faut dire qu’ils refusent catégoriquement tous les deux de faire face à ce qu’ils ressentent, sachant la manière par laquelle tout cela se finira. Tous les deux sont complexes et intéressants, on prend ainsi plaisir à les comprendre tout au long de l’histoire. Morgan garde son sang-froid en toutes circonstances et, comme le premier tome nous le présente, c’est une personne des plus courageuses et honnêtes. Ce qui est un très bon point pour elle.
On se demande tout de suite qui sont les Ikati que se trouvent ici et ce qu’ils vont apporter à l’histoire. Mais tout sera compris avec le temps, nous ouvrant même de nouvelles possibilités pour la suite de l’histoire. On était resté assez cantonné aux mêmes endroits dans le premier tome, et surtout à la tribu, c’était intéressant de voir d’autres lieux et j’espère que cela continuera ainsi.
Ce nouveau roman était donc une jolie surprise, à la hauteur du premier. Une très bonne intrigue accompagnée d’une histoire d’amour qui nous plait dès le début du tome.

Fourth grave beneath my feet (Charley Davidson, 4) – Darynda Jones

Sometimes being the grim reaper really is that. Grim. And since Charley’s last case went so awry, she has taken a couple months off to wallow in the wonders of self-pity. But when a woman shows up on her doorstep convinced someone is trying to kill her, Charley has to force herself to rise above. Or at least get dressed. She quickly realizes something is amiss when everyone the woman knows swears she’s insane. The more they refute the woman’s story, the more Charley believes it.

In the meantime, the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, has been cleared of all charges. He is out of prison and out of Charley’s life, as per her wishes and several perfectly timed death threats. But his absence has put a serious crimp in her sex life. While there are other things to consider, like the fact that the city of Albuquerque has been taken hostage by an arsonist, Charley is having a difficult time staying away. Especially when it looks like Reyes may be involved. Just when life was returning to normal, Charley is thrust back into the world of crime, punishment, and the devil in blue jeans. 

 The Mage (Sons of Destiny, 8) – Jean Johnson

 Daughter of the Sword (Fated Blades, 1) – Steve Bein

Pouvez-vous vous présenter en quelques mots?
Premièrement, merci de m’avoir ici ! J’écris de la fantaisie urbaine/romance paranormale en m’appuyant plus sur le côté romance pour l’histoire. A part écrire, lire est la chose que je préfère. J’adore le vin rouge, le chili au fromage frit et Ryan Gosling, pas nécessairement dans cet ordre.
Pouvez-vous nous en dire un peu plus sur votre nouvelle sortie ?
Shadow’s Edge est le premier tome de Night Prowler, une série de fantaisie urbaine/romance paranormale portant sur les Ikati, une ancienne race de changes-formes originaire d’Afrique, engendrée par le culte des chats qui a duré durant des milliers d’années. Ils se sont installés dans de petites colonies secrètes tout autour du monde et possèdent un système précis de lois qui punit les traîtres et les déserteurs par la mort. Dans Shadow’s Edge, nous suivons Jenna Moore – la fille d’un des déserteurs les plus connus qui a été élevée dans l’ignorance de son passé – alors qu’elle découvre la vérité au sujet de ce qu’elle est – pour plonger tête la première dans un monde dont elle ignorait l’existence quand un charmant étranger lui offre de lui dévoiler les réponses de son passé mystérieux.
L’histoire est un mélange de fantasy, suspens, mystère et bien sûr de romance.
Quelle est votre scène préférée dans l’histoire ?
Il y a une scène de sexe qui se déroule dans un arbre et c’était très drôle de l’écrire, mais je vais laisser les lecteurs la découvrir.
La couverture représente-t-elle le contenu du livre ?
La couverture a été un challenge car j’étais contre la traditionnelle scène avec un homme torse-nu/ une jeune femme qui se pâme comme pour de nombreuses romances. Mon éditeur, Montlake Romance, a soutenu mes idées au point qu’ils ont même demandé à un artiste de me faire environ 12 échantillons pour que je choisisse cette ambiance sensuelle et mystérieuse qui incarne parfaitement mon livre. J’en suis vraiment contente.
Avez-vous eu besoin de faire beaucoup de recherches pour votre histoire ?
Pour Shadow’s Edge j’ai eu besoin de deux mois de recherches pour le développement de mes personnages avant de commencer à écrire. La moitié de l’histoire se déroule à Venice Beach, CA, proche de l’endroit où je vis, mais la seconde moitié se situe dans d’anciennes forêts dans le sud de l’Angleterre. Il y a plusieurs endroits qui sont mentionnés dans le livre, bien que j’ai pris quelques libertés poétiques et que j’ai changé quelques détails pour qu’ils conviennent à l’histoire. Ceci dit, New Forest dans les Hampshire, Angleterre, n’est pas seulement une forêt, elle contient aussi des pâturages et des landes, mais pour mon histoire c’est devenue uniquement une forêt. Le second volume, Edge of Oblivion, se passe à Rome et je me suis servie du récent voyage que j’y ai fait, avec de nombreuses heures de recherches sur internet pour développer mon environnement.
Quand avez-vous réalisé que vous vouliez devenir écrivain ?
Ce n’était qu’une lointaine idée quand j’ai eu 20 ans et 30 ans. Ce n’est qu’à partir du moment où j’ai lu Twilight et que je suis tombée amoureuse d’Edward Cullen que j’ai eu envie d’écrire un livre. Je n’avais pas d’histoire, jusqu’au jour où le plus beau des chats noirs est entré dans mon magasin (je suis fleuriste).  Elle a l’impressionnante habilité de s’évaporer dans les airs et me regarde toujours comme si elle voulait dire quelque chose – j’ai alors pensé que les chats étaient mystérieux, intéressants et incompris, ce qui m’a conduit à faire des recherches sur la culture des chats en Egypte, et comment les chats sont apparus dans l’histoire jusqu’à aujourd’hui, cela m’a conduit à l’idée d’une race secrète de changes-formes vivant parmi nous. (J’ai cependant fait d’eux des panthères plutôt que des chats. Beaucoup plus dangereux.) Une fois l’idée en place, j’ai écrit mon manuscrit en quatre mois.
Avez-vous déjà d’autres projets en vue ? Ou bien est-ce top secret ?
J’ai en tête plusieurs possibles séries, dont une au sujet d’un vampire qui travaille dans une banque de sang et veut devenir humain. Une autre YA au sujet d’une fille qui peut communiquer avec les morts. Je suis cependant toujours en train de travailler sur le troisième tome de ma série Night Prowler, et tout le reste est donc en suspens.
Avez-vous un auteur favori ? Ou un livre ?
Mon livre préféré est The Rainbow de D. H. Lawrence. Personne n’écrit de scènes d’amour tel que lui, il capture parfaitement le chagrin et l’intimité du mariage. Un autre, plus actuel, est Everything Matters de Ron Currie, Jr. C’est une histoire au sujet d’un  homme qui est né sachant quand le monde allait s’éteindre.
Pouvez-vous nous dire ce qu’il adviendra dans les prochains livres ?
Je suis en train de travailler sur le troisième tome de la série qui se déroule à Paris, mais il n’a pas encore de titre. Il commence juste après la fin du tome 2. Après celui-ci,  je vais peut-être écrire plus de romans pour la série mais en changeant complètement la direction de l’histoire. Je ne sais pas encore.
Etes-vous déjà venue en France ?
Pas encore ! Mon mari et moi sommes allés récemment en Italie, mais nous avons prévu de venir au Printemps prochain, ce qui inclut Nice, la Provence, Paris et Bordeaux comme nous adorons le vin français.  (Bon, j’adore. Il préfère Napa Valley, mais j’y travaille !)

Can you introduce yourself in a few words?
First, thanks for having me! I write paranormal romance/urban fantasy with a strong focus on the romance in the story. Aside from writing, my favorite thing to do is read. I love red wine, chili cheese fries and Ryan Gosling, not necessarily in that order.
Tell us about your newest release.
Shadow’s Edge is the first installation of the Night Prowler Novels, a paranormal romance/urban fantasy series about the Ikati, an ancient race of shape shifters that originated in Africa and spawned the cat-worship culture that thrived there thousands of years ago. They’ve settled in small, secret colonies around the world and have a system of iron-clad laws that punish traitors and deserters with death. In Shadow’s Edge, we follow Jenna Moore—and daughter of one of the tribe’s most notorious deserters who’s been raised in ignorance about her past—as she discovers the truth about her roots and is plunged head-first into a world she had no idea existed when a handsome stranger shows up offering her answers about her mysterious past.
The story is a blend of fantasy, suspense, mystery and of course romance.
Can you tell us a little about your favorite scene in the story?
Well, there’s a very hot sex scene that takes place in a tree and was a lot of fun to write, but I’ll leave that to the readers to discover.
Does your cover represent what is between the pages?
The cover was a challenge because I was adamant about not having the traditional bare-chested man/swooning woman scene that so many romance novels depict. My publisher, Montlake Romance, was so supportive of my ideas they even had the cover artist make me over half a dozen samples until I got that edgy, sensual, mysterious vibe I felt embodied the tone of the book. I’m very happy with it.
How much research does there go into your stories?
For Shadow’s Edge I did about two months of research and character development before I began writing. Half of the story takes place in Venice Beach, CA near where I live but the other half takes place in the primeval forests of southern England. There are several actual places mentioned in the book, though I took some poetic license and changed some details to better fit the needs of the story. For instance, the New Forest in Hampshire, England isn’t actually all forest, it’s pastureland and heathland as well, but for the story it became all forest. The second installation in the series, Edge of Oblivion, is set in Rome and I drew on a recent trip I’d taken there along with many hours of online research to develop the setting.
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
Being a writer was the farthest thing from my mind during my 20s and 30s. It wasn’t until I read Twilight and fell in love with Edward Cullen that I was seized with the need to write a book. I didn’t have a story, though, until one day the most beautiful black stray cat wandered into my store (I own a flower shop). She has the most amazing ability to vanish into thin air and is always looking at me as if she’s just about to say something—it got me to thinking about how mysterious and interesting and misunderstood cats are, which led to a bunch of research on the cat worship cultures of ancient Egypt and how cats have otherwise been maligned throughout history, which led to the idea of a race of secretive shape-shifters that live among us. (I made them panthers instead of housecats, though. Much more dangerous.) Once I had the idea I wrote the manuscript in under four months and that was that.
Have you already other plans for future series? Or isit top secret?
I have plans for several other series,  including a series about a vampire who works at a blood bank and wants to be human, and a YA series about a girl who can communicate with the dead. I’m still at work on book 3 of the Night Prowler novels, however, so everything is on hold until that is completed.
Do you have a favorite author? Or a favorite book?
My all-time favorite book is The Rainbow by D.H. Lawrence. No one can write beautiful, emotional sex/loves scenes and capture the true heartbreak and intimacies of marriage like he could. A current/contemporary favorite is Everything Matters by Ron Currie, Jr. It’s the story about a man who was born knowing when the world would end.
Can you tell us about what’s coming up next for you writing wise?
I’m currently working on the third installation of the Night Prowler series which is set in Paris but doesn’t yet have a title. It picks up where book #2 left off. After that I may write more in the series or go off in a completely different direction, I’m not sure yet!
Have you ever been in France?
Not yet! My husband and I recently went to Italy, but we’ve planned a trip next spring to France that includes Nice, Provence, Paris and the Bordeaux wine regions because we love French wine. (Well, I do. He prefers Napa Valley, but I’m working on it!)

Review: I confess I didn’t know what I could expect when I started this book, I was a little anxious to have the same story as the Drakon series by Shana Abé. Indeed, the two books have a lot in common. A species who can shift in creatures or vapor, a world built far from Humans, some hunters who will do everything to kill them, a young woman living out of this community they want back. Well, a lot of elements I was puzzled about. But once in the story, I confess I didn’t stop until I finished it.
Jenna is a young woman who works as a win specialist in a little restaurant. Since her childhood and the disappearance of her father, she runs away an unknown threat, a threat that hangs constantly over her head. And, when one day she meets a strange man, she wonders if it’s not him she is supposed to flee away. But so tired of being hunted, she will ask him for help to finally know the truth about her past.
We’re immediately intrigued by Leander, we try to understand what he really wants from her. It’s difficult for him to understand his feelings when he meets with Jenna, the woman he was asked to take back home. But our heroin is far from being docile, and nobody could impose his choices. I really enjoyed this heroin so determined. Despite everyone tries to manipulate her all along the book, to change her in a person she isn’t, she is fierce and faces all the problems alone. I was very impressed by her nature; she stays strong even if this new life is difficult for her. She doesn’t want to be part of this world, but there is no choice for her. It’s was very pleasant to follow her all along the story, to assist to her discovery of the truth and to assist to her adaptation.
I also enjoyed Morgan, she is different from the others with her desire for freedom and her weaknesses. We think at first she is strong and rough, but it’s finally only a facade… We also discover her all along the book, at the Jenna’s side and we understand her desires that finally are the same as the ones of our heroin.
A big part of the story is about Jenna and the answers she tries to find out but the author also introduces us to the hunters, who do everything to kill them all. This volume announces like that some big things for the sequel, a future difficult war, I’m sure. I’m very curious to know what will happen now and I can’t wait to follow Morgan this time as she also seems very interesting.

Jenna a passé son enfance à se cacher, à fuir quelqu’un – ou quelque chose – que ses parents ont toujours refusé de lui révéler. Elle ne fait confiance à personne, pas depuis la mystérieuse disparition de son père, et surtout pas depuis qu’elle possède des habilités hors du commun. Quand le charmant et énigmatique Leander apparait, promettant de lui révéler le mystère entourant son passé, elle sait qu’elle ne peut pas non plus lui faire confiance. Mais leur connexion est indéniable, et aussi puissante que l’ennemi qui s’acharne à détruire les leurs.

Avis : Je dois dire que je ne savais pas trop quoi penser au départ de cette histoire, j’avais un peu peur que ça soit un copié collé de la série Drakon de Shana Abé. En effet, les deux livres ont énormément de points communs. Une race pouvant se transformer en bête ou en vapeur, un monde créé à l’écart de tous, des chasseurs faisant tout pour les tuer, une jeune femme vivant en dehors de la communauté qu’on cherche à ramener. Enfin beaucoup d’éléments qui m’ont laissé perplexe. Mais une fois lancée dans la lecture je l’avoue, je n’ai pas pu m’arrêter avant de l’avoir terminé.
Jenna est une jeune femme, travaillant en tant que spécialiste des vins dans un restaurant. Depuis toute petite et que son père a disparu, elle fuit une menace inconnue, une menace qui plane au-dessus de sa tête constamment. Et quand un jour elle fait la connaissance d’un homme plus qu’étrange, elle se demande si ce n’est pas lui qu’elle était censée fuir. Mais lasse de tout cela, elle va même aller jusqu’à demander de l’aide afin de découvrir la vérité sur ce qu’elle est et sur son passé.
On est tout de suite intrigué par Leander, on essaie de comprendre ce qu’il veut. Il a du mal à comprendre les sentiments qui l’assaillent dès qu’il rencontre Jenna la femme qu’il doit ramener dans sa tribu. Mais notre héroïne est loin d’être une femme docile et personne ne lui imposera ses choix. J’ai vraiment adoré cette héroïne si déterminée. Bien qu’on essaie de la manipuler tout au long du livre, de la transformer en une personne qu’elle n’est pas, elle garde la tête haute et affronte tous les dangers. J’ai été impressionnée par sa nature, elle ne plie pas au moindre problème, et pourtant il faut dire que niveau stress et ennuis elle aura son lot. Elle ne veut pas s’adapter à ce nouveau monde qui l’attend mais elle n’a pas le choix, et la fuite n’est finalement pas une possibilité. C’était très agréable de la suivre tout au long de l’histoire, d’assister à la découverte de la vérité et à son adaptation dans ce nouvel univers.
J’ai aussi beaucoup apprécié Morgan, sa fraicheur, son envie de liberté et ses faiblesses. On la croit au premier abord, forte et tenace, mais ce n’est finalement qu’une façade… On la découvre tout au long du livre, aux côtés de Jenna et on comprend ses désirs qui semblent finalement vraiment coïncider à ceux de notre de héroïne.
Le plus gros de l’histoire se centre sur Jenna et les réponses qu’elle tente de trouver mais l’auteure nous introduit aussi aux chasseurs qui font tout pour décimer leur race. Ce début nous annonce ainsi de grandes choses pour la suite, une guerre en perspective qui sera difficile à gagner. J’ai hâte de pouvoir lire le second tome pour savoir comment ils se sortiront de cette bataille à venir et de pouvoir cette fois-ci suivre le personnage de Morgan qui semble plus qu’intéressant.
