The Scam by Janet Evanovich & Lee Goldberg

Fox and O’Hare, Book 4

Synopsis: Nicolas Fox is a charming con man and master thief on the run. Kate O’Hare is the FBI agent who is hot on his trail. At least that’s what everyone thinks. In reality, Fox and O’Hare are secretly working together to bring down super-criminals the law can’t touch. Criminals like brutal casino magnate Evan Trace.

Evan Trace is running a money-laundering operation through his casino in Macau. Some of his best customers are mobsters, dictators, and global terrorists. Nick and Kate will have to go deep undercover as high-stakes gamblers, wagering millions of dollars—and their lives—in an attempt to topple Trace’s empire.

It’s a scam that will take Fox and O’Hare from the Las Vegas strip, to the sun-soaked beaches of Oahu’s North Shore, and into the dark back alleys of Macau. Their only backup—a self-absorbed actor, a Somali pirate, and Kate’s father, and an ex-soldier who believes a rocket launcher is the best way to solve every problem. What could possibly go wrong?

Review: As always, I was curious to immerse myself in a novel by Janet Evanovich and this series allows me each time to have a good time with a light and funny reading.

We find as always a new investigation or a new scam I should say, performed to bring down a Casino owner, money launderer for all the biggest criminals of this world. It is up to Kate and Nick to find a ploy to make him fall and thus start a new adventure. But as always, this plan remains far from easy, even with the help of their associates that we have great pleasure to see again here as always. Yes, Willie will be there, along with our beloved crazy actor or Kate’s father who is eager for action and fits easily in rather complicated situations. But that’s not all, because we have some new characters.

As you can see, we are carried away in a new well-planned scam as always and it was very interesting to see what the characters were thinking again. In addition, there is also an evolution for the relationship between Kate and Nick and although everything is very complicated and tense, it’s nice to see how far it will advance and progress.

So it was a nice book to read, especially for holidays, if we do not expect anything too complicated.

Fox and O’Hare, Tome 4

The Job by Janet Evanovich & Lee Goldberg

Fox and O’Hare,  Book 3

Synopsis: He’s a charming con man and she’s a dedicated FBI agent, and they’re about to drive each other crazy . . . again!

The FBI had one demand when they secretly teamed up Special Agent Kate O’Hare with charming con man Nicolas Fox—bring down the world’s most-wanted and untouchable felons. This time it’s the brutal leader of a global drug-smuggling empire. The FBI doesn’t know what their target looks like, where he is, or how to find him, but Nick Fox has a few tricks up his sleeve to roust this particular Knipschildt chocolate–loving drug lord.

From the streets of Nashville to the back alleys of Lisbon, from the rooftops of Istanbul to the middle of the Thames, Nick and Kate chase their mark. When they find themselves pitted against a psychopathic bodyguard and a Portuguese enforcer who gets advice from a pickled head, they decide it’s time to enlist some special talent—talent like a machete-wielding Somali pirate, a self-absorbed actor, an Oscar-winning special effects artist, and Kate’s father Jake, a retired Special Forces operative. Together they could help make this Fox and O’Hare’s biggest win yet . . . if they survive.

Review: I always take a great pleasure in following each adventure with Kate and Nick. Oh yes because it must be said that our authors always have lots of ideas for them in store. Our two characters form a wonderful duo and each of their investigations and scams are always very elaborate. And this time our two heroes will do everything to bring down an important drug baron.

Indeed, a case will fall on them, something that can only intrigue our two protagonists as they will have to face a real villain. The drop would be a great achievement but nobody knows what identity he has taken, or even the face he may have, and finding him seems a feat. Fortunately for them the man is a chocolate and treasures lover. Besides, regarding chocolate, I wonder if it is true that this kind of food can reach such prices. I’m pretty impressed because I did not know that it was possible. But in all cases our heroes will team up again, posing for newlyweds archaeologists trying to sell a lost treasure. But the man they’re facing is far more dangerous than those they have faced before and his right arm, a crazy woman and a torture lover could see through them.

I had a great time with this new survey and it was a real pleasure to see our small group. As always their scam is impressive and it was very interesting to see the whole thing. They may have a role a little less to play in this investigation, but their intervention is always required. I loved to see how the two trust each other whatever they might say. Their attraction and tension throughout the volumes is really intriguing and I admit that I’m curious to see when they finally will face their feelings. They both play a cat and mouse game. We know that Kate’s feelings are sincere but it is quite difficult to understand what Nick wants, even if their attraction is undeniable. But it is true that I am eager to see where all this will evolve. I think our agent clearly explains the concerns of their possible relationship without Nick realizing it but nothing can be forgotten.

In all cases it was once again a very nice volume and I’m curious to see what they’ll do and what scam they will realize for our greatest pleasure. A good entertaining novel.

The Job de Janet Evanovich & Lee Goldberg (VO)

Fox and O’Hare, Tome 3

The Chase by janet Evanovich & Lee Goldberg

Fox and O’Hare, Book 2

Synopsis: Janet Evanovich and Lee Goldberg, bestselling authors of The Heist, return in this action-packed, exciting adventure featuring master con artist Nicolas Fox and die-hard FBI agent Kate O’Hare. And this time around, things go from hot to nuclear when government secrets are on the line.

Internationally renowned thief and con artist Nicolas Fox is famous for running elaborate and daring scams. His greatest con of all: convincing the FBI to team him up with the only person who has ever caught him, and the only woman to ever capture his attention, Special Agent Kate O’Hare. Together they’ll go undercover to swindle and catch the world’s most wanted—and untouchable—criminals.

Their newest target is Carter Grove, a former White House chief of staff and the ruthless leader of a private security agency. Grove has stolen a rare Chinese artifact from the Smithsonian, a crime that will torpedo U.S. relations with China if it ever becomes public. Nick and Kate must work under the radar—and against the clock—to devise a plan to steal the piece back. Confronting Grove’s elite assassins, Nick and Kate rely on the skills of their ragtag crew, including a flamboyant actor, a Geek Squad techie, and a band of AARP-card-carrying mercenaries led by none other than Kate’s dad.

A daring heist and a deadly chase lead Nick and Kate from Washington, D.C., to Shanghai, from the highlands of Scotland to the underbelly of Montreal. But it’ll take more than death threats, trained henchmen, sleepless nights, and the fate of a dynasty’s priceless heirloom to outsmart Fox and O’Hare.

Review: I was really curious to immerse myself in this second novel after finishing the first one and it was perfect as it was available. I enjoyed the first one although it lacked of a little something for me to fully understand the characters, but this time I must say that I am satisfied! This novel is really better than the first one and I took a great pleasure in seeing Kate and Nick in a much more complex and customized scam.

Our little duo has a new difficult mission early in the novel: to find an object that China wants to repatriate in its country. Yes, because the object in question is a fake one and it’s up to Kate and Nick to find out where the real object is located and to exchange it as quickly as possible. But of course, everything is more complicated than expected, especially when the man in question is the former head of the White House, and he takes his privacy and security in very high esteem. Moreover, it is also why he is also the leader of a group of professional assassins who do not hesitate to kill for money. But when they manage to quickly recover the desired object, it seems that Carter did not take this robbery well and he is ready to do anything to have Nick, even if it means blackmailing an FBI agent.

I really enjoyed this new story. I find it really fascinating to see how each time Nick was able to construct his plans from beginning to end and to see at the same time the people hired to do this work. We also understand here that tackling influential people sometimes falls back on you quite easily. However, our two heroes are far from helpless and I loved seeing how they would solve their problems together.

As I said in the review of the first volume, I had some trouble to really connect with Kate even though she opened herself a little more at the end of the story, but I think that it is easier here to see who she really is. And I must say that I took great pleasure to read about her again and to see that this new life had finally changed her. This woman who lived only for her hunts, is left with adrenaline missions in preparation. Of course we also have Nick, equal to him, and it is true that I can not wait to see something happening between them and especially to see how they will handle it. I feel it will be very funny! Not to mention the presence of all the characters we met in the first volume, who play an important role here and others that we encounter in the course of the story, making fullest part of the scam. But I think the character I am most pleased to see is Jake, Kate’s father who is always ready for any confrontation and does not hesitate to bring his retired friends to participate in the game.

Finally to conclude, therefore, I must say that it was a new great discovery and I’m curious about the next scam and to see all the characters I’ve learned to appreciate.

The Chase de Janet Evanovich & Lee Goldberg (VO)

Fox and O’Hare, Tome 2

The Heist by Janet Evanovich & Lee Goldberg

Fox and O’Hare, Book 1

Synopsis: From Janet Evanovich, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Stephanie Plum novels, and Lee Goldberg, bestselling author and television writer for Monk, comes the first adventure in an electrifying new series featuring an FBI agent who always gets her man, and a fearless con artist who lives for the chase.

FBI Special Agent Kate O’Hare is known for her fierce dedication and discipline on the job, chasing down the world’s most wanted criminals and putting them behind bars. Her boss thinks she is tenacious and ambitious; her friends think she is tough, stubborn, and maybe even a bit obsessed. And while Kate has made quite a name for herself for the past five years, the only name she’s cared about is Nicolas Fox—an international crook she wants in more ways than one.

Audacious, handsome, and dangerously charming, Nicolas Fox is a natural con man, notorious for running elaborate scams on very high-profile people. At first he did it for the money. Now he does it for the thrill. He knows that the FBI has been hot on his trail—particularly Kate O’Hare, who has been watching his every move. For Nick, there’s no greater rush than being pursued by a beautiful woman . . . even one who aims to lock him up. But just when it seems that Nicolas Fox has been captured for good, he pulls off his greatest con of all: he convinces the FBI to offer him a job, working side by side with Special Agent Kate O’Hare.

Problem is, teaming up to stop a corrupt investment banker who’s hiding on a private island in Indonesia is going to test O’Hare’s patience and Fox’s skill. Not to mention the skills of their ragtag team made up of flamboyant actors, wanted wheelmen, and Kate’s dad. High-speed chases, pirates, and Toblerone bars are all in a day’s work . . . if O’Hare and Fox don’t kill each other first.

Review: I love the Stephanie Plum series even if it is true that we now have many volumes. Also, when the author has released this new series, especially in collaboration with Lee Goldberg, author of the Monk TV show (a really nice one), I was curious to see how the first novel would be. I had first read the novella that precedes the novel, but it is true that I had not been so convinced by it. But it was only an introduction, and a complete book usually changes our feelings.

Firstly I must say that this series is very different from the one of Stephanie Plum, but it is true that it is a tone below for me. This does not mean that it was not good, not at all, because I enjoyed it, but it was still a bit more difficult to really get into the story and enjoy it from the start. In the end, however, I can say that it was a nice introduction and I am very curious to read the second book and see what happens to our two heroes. Yes because once they are teaming up, the story becomes truly explosive!

Kate has only one obsession in her life: her work, including Nicolas Fox! This is a man who attracts her and at the same time, he is a criminal that she hopes more than anything to bring to justice! Yet when she finally manages to do that, her purpose is destroyed, and no can can be up to this one. But when she least expects it, Nick fled and against the choice of her boss, she goes after him, only to discover something quite incredible. Indeed, her bosses decided it would be much more interesting to use the man to catch other criminals with his extraordinary talents that brought him in prison. But of course, all that being said, Nick keeps his fugitive status and everyone is still after him. It’s now an undercover mission for Kate. So here they are forced to team up to confuse a very powerful man that no one knows the location. And while Kate remains quite doubtful about this association, we find all the steps necessary to establish such a scam. I was really impressed with everything they had to realize, all the people he had to bring together and all the plans he had to think about, all that for a single event. It was a fabulously organized scam and I loved every minute of it, even if it is true that even when the plan is fully decided, there are still external factors that can change the game at any time.

It is quite difficult at the beginning to really understand Kate, because she seems pretty automated, quite cold and without feelings if it is not question of her hunting. Yet in the course of reading, we discover a few more things about her that allows us to get to know her, even if she always keeps a personality a bit detached. But I think we’ll know more later as she is facing something new. Conversely, we come to understand perfectly that Nick is much more open. It’s quite funny indeed to see the comparison between the two characters as they are completely opposite. We now perfectly understand why their interactions are always interesting.

So it was an enjoyable read and I am curious to know more about it to see what the authors will introduce us for the sequels.
