Dead Ice de Laurell K. Hamilton (VO)

Anita Blake, Tome 24

A Shiver of Light by Laurell K. Hamilton

Merry Gentry, Book 9

Synopsis: I am Princess Meredith NicEssus. Legal name Meredith Gentry, because “Princess” looks so pretentious on a driver’s license. I was the first faerie princess born on American soil, but I wouldn’t be the only one for much longer…

Merry Gentry, ex–private detective, now full-time princess, knew she was descended from fertility goddesses, but when she learned she was about to have triplets, she began to understand what that might mean. Infertility has plagued the high ranks of faerie for centuries. Now nobles of both courts of faerie are coming to court Merry and her men, at their home in exile in the Western Lands of Los Angeles, because they will do anything to have babies of their own.

Taranis, King of Light and Illusion, is a more dangerous problem. He tried to seduce Merry and, failing that, raped her. He’s using the human courts to sue for visitation rights, claiming that one of the babies is his. And though Merry knows she was already pregnant when he took her, she can’t prove it.

To save herself and her babies from Taranis she will use the most dangerous powers in all of faerie: a god of death, a warrior known as the Darkness, the Killing Frost, and a king of nightmares. They are her lovers, and her dearest loves, and they will face down the might of the high courts of faerie—while trying to keep the war from spreading to innocent humans in Los Angeles, who are in danger of becoming collateral damage.

Review: It took a long time for this volume to be released. Yes, it took several years to finally have a sequel to the Merry Gentry’s adventures. I know that a lot of people were waiting impatiently and I confess that it was the same for me. When the novel came out in the US, I was very curious to discover the reviews of the readers before immersing myself in the story, unfortunately the reviews were not so good. Yes, because many appeared very mixed and I confess that it made me a little anxious … Of course I saw one or two good reviews but it was not a lot in a whole. So it’s true that finally that I did not read the book right away and I waited for a moment before doing so. The volume was then released in France and there some new reviews appeared, making me curious again and then someone loaned me the novel. I had therefore no more reasons to wait to make up my own mind.

I think that I understand people and their disappointment. Perhaps I expected too much, especially after so long. It is true that unlike for the Anita Blake series, I had high hopes because I loved each of the volumes. Alas, we have an end for every good thing, right? I’m not saying that this volume was not good because it is, it’s even great to find again the characters and the universe, but I think that I too expected too much. The novel gives a feeling of lack of events that I had not had with the others, or perhaps it is me who wanted things to go faster. It must be said that we have the birth of the babies, the threats made by Taranis and the death of a main character. Yes these are the three frames of the story which ultimately do not do enough for me. It’s true that the fact that we have the death of a character I liked, especially in this manner and as quickly, was a little disturbed and I did not really understand the reason. But we’ll perhaps understand all that later. We can not predict what will happen. I also wondered if the novel finally was not a transition, a way to just get things done in the next volume but it’s the same, we will see about that later.

Am I too negative? I’m sorry, that’s not necessarily what I want to show. As I said I loved following Merry as it’s a character I have grown to love over the years and it’s true that seeing her evolution is always a pleasure. Of course, I was also curious to see what would happen with her children and who the fathers would be! It was nice to see our heroine slowing down a bit and showing a maternal instinct, like her companions, which we did not expect necessarily about. But it was also fascinating to discover the characteristics of these little ones to see the beginning of their powers and to understand that there would be a lot of work with them. Of course, we also find all our men and I must admit that I had forgotten that there were so many of them. Besides after childbirth everyone is waiting impatiently for our heroine to be ready to reiterate as quickly as possible. No, it does not really change from the other previous volumes regarding that. By cons I enjoyed seeing a different side of Andais, this terrible woman and yet with still many surprises.

To conclude, I had a mixed feeling about this book. It was a pleasure to have a novel in the series, as well as seeing the characters, but I expected more.

Frisson de lumière de Laurell K. Hamilton

Merry Gentry, Tome 9

Stacking the Shelves #45

STSmall_thumb[2]

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga’s Reviews

 Thank you Sullivan McPig!
Enemy Within (Enemy, 1) – Marcella Burnard
An intergalactic cold war-and some heated passion- from an inventive new voice in futuristic romance.

After a stint in an alien prison, Captain Ari Rose wonders why she even bothered to survive. Stripped of her command and banished to her father’s scientific expedition to finish a Ph.D. she doesn’t want, Ari never planned to languish quietly behind a desk. She wasn’t built for it, either. But when pirates commandeer her father’s ship, Ari once again becomes a prisoner.

As far as pirate leader Cullin is concerned, Ari’s past imprisonment puts her dead center in Cullin’s sights. If she hasn’t been brainwashed and returned as a spy, then he’s convinced she must be part of a traitorous alliance endangering billions of lives. Cullin can’t afford the desire she fires within him and he’ll stop at nothing, including destroying her, to uncover the truth.

The problem is . . . whoever it is may not be human.

Armed with only wit and Pradas, Skylar begins questioning the servants, but the growing list of suspects includes the sexy and brooding caretaker, Dorian, a man desperately trying to forget his tragic past. And a major distraction for Skylar.

Determined to play detective—instead of the fashion police—and unravel the dark history of the mansion, Skylar is plunged into an otherworldly mystery that not even she can explain away. As the boundaries between reality and dreams blur, Skylar’s greatest challenge is to stay alive long enough to learn the truth.

The Monsters In Your Neighborhood (Monstrosity, 2) – Jesse Petersen

As one of Frankenstein’s Creatures, Natalie Gray knows that unique parts sometimes make up a great whole. Still, leading a diverse support group for monsters-now including Cthulhu!-isn’t an easy task. Especially not since the internet arrived. New York City embraces the different and the bizarre. Still, even for such a fun-loving city, the supernatural and monstrous might be a bit too much. It’s been six months since the members of “Club Monstrosity” overcame the most recent spate of anti-monster violence and they’ve reestablished their routine of meeting in a church basement once a week to (ugh!) talk about their feelings. Still, they also know a war against them is brewing.
Natalie and Alec (the werewolf) have begun dating, and the mummies Kai and Rehu are tighter than a bug in a…well, bandage. But when modern means (YouTube, Twitter, bits and bytes) are used to chilp away at the solidarity of these ancient monsters, it’s up to Natalie to save the day. #MonstersInNewYork may be trending on Twitter, but this girl’s trending toward saving the day…somehow.

No Angel No Angel – Helen Keeble

Rafael Angelos just got handed the greatest gift any teenage boy could ever dream of. Upon arriving at his new boarding school for senior year, he discovered that he is the ONLY male student. But what should have been a godsend isn’t exactly heaven on Earth.

Raffi’s about to learn that St. Mary’s is actually a hub for demons-and that he was summoned to the school by someone expecting him to save the day. Raffi knows he’s no angel-but it’s pretty hard to deny that there’s some higher plan at work when he wakes up one morning to discover a glowing circle around his head.

A Cursed Embrace (Weird Girls, #2) A cursed Embraced (Weird Girls, 2) – Cecy Robson

Celia Wird and her three sisters are just like other twenty-something girls—with one tiny exception: They are the products of a curse that backfired and gave each of them unique powers that made them, well, a little weird…

After Celia Wird and her sisters help master vampire Misha save his family, their powers are exposed to the supernatural community of the Lake Tahoe region. But fame comes at a price, and being “weird” isn’t always welcome.

To make matters worse, Celia desires the love of Alpha werewolf Aric, but his pack is bent on destroying their relationship to preserve his pureblood status. And once weres start turning up dead—with evidence pointing to the vampires—she must face the prospect of losing Aric forever. But the chaos only masks a new threat. An evil known as the Tribe has risen—and their sights are set on Celia and her sisters.

The Brokenhearted The Broken Hearted – Amelia Kahaney

A teenage girl is transformed into a reluctant superhero and must balance her old life with the dark secret of who she has become.

Prima ballerina Anthem Fleet is closely guarded by her parents in their penthouse apartment. But when she meets the handsome Gavin at a party on the wrong side of town, she is immediately drawn into his dangerous world. Then, in a tragic accident, Anthem falls to her death. She awakes in an underground lab, with a bionic heart ticking in her chest. As she navigates her new life, she uncovers the sinister truth behind those she trusted the most, and the chilling secret of her family lineage…and her duty to uphold it.

The Chaos of Stars The Chaos of Stars – Kirsten White

Isadora’s family is seriously screwed up.

Of course, as the human daughter of Egyptian gods, that pretty much comes with the territory. She’s also stuck with parents who barely notice her, and a house full of relatives who can’t be bothered to remember her name. After all, they are going to be around forever—and she’s a mere mortal.

Isadora’s sick of living a life where she’s only worthy of a passing glance, and when she has the chance to move to San Diego with her brother, she jumps on it. But Isadora’s quickly finding that a “normal” life comes with plenty of its own epic complications—and that there’s no such thing as a clean break when it comes to family. Much as she wants to leave her past behind, she can’t shake the ominous dreams that foretell destruction for her entire family. When it turns out there may be truth in her nightmares, Isadora has to decide whether she can abandon her divine heritage after all.

Kara is the prisoner of yet another demonic lord, but she quickly discovers that she’s far more than a mere hostage. Yet waiting for rescue has never been her style, and Kara has no intention of being a pawn in someone else’s game.

There’s intrigue to spare as she digs into the origin of the demonic lords and discovers the machinations of humans and demons alike. Kara is shocked to discover that she has her own history in the demon realm, and that the ties between her and the demonic lords Rhyzkahl and Szerain go back farther than she could have ever imagined. But treachery runs rampant among all the lords, and she’s going to have to stay sharp in order to keep from being used to further their own agendas. The lords have a secret that dates back to earth’s ancient history, and it could have devastating repercussions for both worlds.

The Spellman Files (The Spellmans #1) The Spellman Files (Spellman, 1) – Lisa Lutz

Meet Isabel “Izzy” Spellman, private investigator. This twenty-eight-year-old may have a checkered past littered with romantic mistakes, excessive drinking, and creative vandalism; she may be addicted to “Get Smart” reruns and prefer entering homes through windows rather than doors — but the upshot is she’s good at her job as a licensed private investigator with her family’s firm, Spellman Investigations. Invading people’s privacy comes naturally to Izzy. In fact, it comes naturally to all the Spellmans. If only they could leave their work at the office. To be a Spellman is to snoop on a Spellman; tail a Spellman; dig up dirt on, blackmail, and wiretap a Spellman. Part Nancy Drew, part Dirty Harry, Izzy walks an indistinguishable line between Spellman family member and Spellman employee. Duties include: completing assignments from the bosses, aka Mom and Dad (preferably without scrutiny); appeasing her chronically perfect lawyer brother (often under duress); setting an example for her fourteen-year-old sister, Rae (who’s become addicted to “recreational surveillance”); and tracking down her uncle (who randomly disappears on benders dubbed “Lost Weekends”). But when Izzy’s parents hire Rae to follow her (for the purpose of ascertaining the identity of Izzy’s new boyfriend), Izzy snaps and decides that the only way she will ever be normal is if she gets out of the family business. But there’s a hitch: she must take one last job before they’ll let her go — a fifteen-year-old, ice-cold missing person case. She accepts, only to experience a disappearance far closer to home, which becomes the most important case of her life.

Riveted (Iron Seas, #3) Riveted (Iron Seas, 3) – Meljean Brook

A century after a devastating volcanic eruption forced Iceland’s inhabitants to abandon its shores, the island has become enshrouded in legend. But the truth behind the legends is mechanical, not magical—and the mystery of the island a matter of life and death for a community of women who once spilled noble blood to secure their freedom.

Five years ago, Annika unwittingly endangered that secret, but her sister Källa took the blame and was exiled. Now Annika serves on an airship, searching for her sister and longing to return home. But that home is threatened when scientific expedition leader David Kentewess comes aboard, looking to expose Annika’s secrets. Then disaster strikes, leaving David and Annika stranded on a glacier and pursued by a madman, with their very survival depending on keeping the heat rising between them—and generating lots of steam

Kiss the Dead by Laurell K. Hamilton

Anita Blake, Book 21

Synopsis: When a fifteen-year-old girl is abducted by vampires, it’s up to U.S. Marshal Anita Blake to find her. And when she does, she’s faced with something she’s never seen before: a terrifyingly ordinary group of people—kids, grandparents, soccer moms—all recently turned and willing to die to avoid serving a master. And where there’s one martyr, there will be more…

But even vampires have monsters that they’re afraid of. And Anita is one of them…

review: I’m always very anxious before starting a new Anita Blake novel. Well I think everyone can understand my reasons if you follow the series. I had a few problems with some books and I was wondering if L.K.H. managed to change the situation we had about the characters and the story. It’s a series I really loved, but I think it’s always difficult to keep the same level for so long, mainly with our heroine’s sexual life. I’m sure you know what I mean without enter in the details.
I have to say I’m very happy that this book was about a real police investigation. It’s been a long time since we hadn’t had something like that! Of course, as always, everyone judges her, but it’s more regulated than before. The appearance of some new vampires different from others arouses the suspicion of our young Marshal who tries to understand what is going on and who stands behind it. Mainly when we learn that these vampires want to fight to be free, to live without any masters. I confess I was very surprised by the idea; it’s an interesting aspect we can approach here. But I think everything is resolved a little too fast, mainly as we finally don’t even see Benjamin, the man we speak about all along the book. It’s perhaps normal… But I confess I was intrigued by him and I was disappointed to have an easy solution.
Well, as always, the personal life of our heroine has a big impact on the story. I think it could never be different. But we’re getting used to it now, don’t we? It’s true we have many sex scenes… And Anita is so much in the action that she even forgets to feed the ardeur. Yes, yes it’s true! So, of course, poor Anita needs to restart from the beginning. I confess the idea made me smile, for one time, OK I got it, but after twice we wonder if she doesn’t do it on purpose. Personally, I think that some of the scenes didn’t help the story to progress and they were quite useless… It’s unfortunate because it was so good at first…
I know it seems I’m very negative about the book and it’s also a pleasure to read a new book featuring Anita but I think I’ll wait one more time and see how the sequel is. We can feel the desire to return to the first books but I think it’s impossible. So we need to adapt ourselves. It was however pleasant to find all the characters despite Richard isn’t here this time. But Micah, Nathaniel, Jean Claude, Asher and many more are here for us.
Despite all that, I really enjoyed getting into the world of our heroine and the story is a fast read. Well, it’s true the chapters aren’t very long either and we can progress quite quickly. I liked this book, more than some last ones and I would like to see what will happen now.

Kiss the Dead de Laurell K. Hamilton (VO)

Anita Blake, Tome 21

The Laughing Corpse (Volume 1 and 2) by Laurell K Hamilton (VO)

Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter : The Laughing Corpse, Volume 1 : Animator

Synopsis : Anita Blake is back in the second volume of Marvel’s comic adaptation of Laurell K. Hamilton’s bestselling series of novels! What would you do for a million dollars? Would you resurrect a two-and-one-half-century old corpse? Harold Gaynor poses just that question to Animator and part-time vampire hunter, Anita Blake… Plus, some crime scenes are even too horrible for a vampire slayer, and the worse they are, the more questions they raise.

Review : This time I start with the first volume, and I can tell it was better! One more time, we get into the story very quickly. The meeting with the voodoo priestess is very impressive and we feel all the horror and the feelings that inspire the machinations about the zombies. The dead are very well realized, but I confess the last ones are a little too much green. Shouldn’t they be gray instead?

Otherwise I think the story follows the book very well, and we find Anita in an investigation about some horrific murders. But we can also add Jean Claude, a billionaire man determined to hire Anita even if she doesn’t want it. The end of the comic concludes with the gift of the priestess, and I’m curious to assist to the first meeting between Anita and Jean Claude, I think it will be epic!

This first volume is as good as the others I’ve read. Anita is always the same and I really liked to see her penguins collection.

Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter: The Laughing Corpse, Volume 2: Necromancer

Synopsis : The second chapter of best-selling author Laurell K. Hamilton’s thriller! Vampire hunter Anita Blake has crossed the paths of the worst St. Louis has to offer – and now they want her out of the picture for good! But Anita isn’t the type of person to go down without a fight… and she’s going to make sure it hurts something fierce!

Review : Oh the meeting between Anita and Jean Claude is amazing! It happens exactly the way I thought it was. We experience very well the discomfort feeling for our heroine and the determination of Jean Claude. It’s very funny, we always want to see them in a place together to know what will happen.
The murders were well realized and we quickly see the horror of each, mainly when it’s about children. We understand too why Anita is so uncomfortable with all these events. I read this volume really fast, it’s mainly based on our two characters despite the story progress a little. But we know we have to wait the sequel to know more about the investigation.
I think the only problem with comics is that we must have a lot of volumes to read a whole story.
