Review: After the end of Absolution, we can only have one wish: Read Omega. Indeed, the events of the second volume ends in a fairly explosive way and I was curious about the followings events.

So we start directly after the end of the second novel and our whole town took refuge in Omega, but it’s only the start of troubles and Matthias has not abandoned his desire to destroy all the inhabitants of Penton and especially to recover his son. Will and Randa patrol around Omega, trying to understand what the enemy is trying to do. In addition to that, as we have seen it before, a kind of relationship begins to appear between them although Randa fights as she can to not succumb. It was pretty funny to see them evolve together. By their past, they both try to show their values ​​and loyalty to Aidan. But Will is determined to thwart his father whatever that might mean.
 
It was really interesting to follow Will this time in this novel. Despite the character we think we knew in the first two books, we discover a whole new side. We knew that our hero had to overcome many obstacles in order to escape his father, but not what it really meant to him. It was pretty crazy and sad to discover the truth about him. He will open himself to Cage (to help him) and mainly to Randa gradually and we are surprised by his strength and courage. But that’s not all, Randa is also a character that we learn to discover here. She is a young woman proud and strong but also has a high sensitivity and many doubts. She did not really like her vampire side and did everything to forget who she really is though this is not possible. Will will help her to evolve, to understand and accept what she is. Of course we will also discover more about Matthias and Cage here. I admit that I was curious to see what both had in reserve. One is pretty crazy and the other tries to do his best to help Penton.

War is coming faster than expected on the gates of Omega, but our protagonists Aidan, Mirren and the others are far from ready to surrender and fight to preserve the life they have built. A new very good volume and I would love to learn more about Melissa and Cage now.

Penton Legacy, Tome 3

Résumé (traduction personnelle) : La guerre sanglante entre le Tribunal Vampire et la ville Penton, Alabama, fait rage, obligeant ses habitants et leurs humains à battre en retraite dans la forteresse souterraine de dernier recours: Omega. Là, Will Ludlam est chargé de s’occuper des humains de Penton, bien qu’il aspire à combattre aux côtés de ses frères vampires. Il connaît les risques : en tant que fils du chef vicieux du Tribunal, la capture de Will pourrait condamner la résistance. Pourtant, il est déterminé à prouver sa valeur à son père et à l’ancien officier de l’armée américaine Thomas Randa, sa belle partenaire réticente. Avis : Après la fin d’Absolution, on ne peut qu’avoir qu’une seule envie : lire Oméga. Il faut dire que les événements du deuxième tome se terminent d’une façon assez explosive et on reste curieux par les prochaines actions de chacun.

On se retrouve donc directement à la suite du deuxième roman et toute notre petite ville s’est réfugiée dans Oméga, mais l’ennui se fait sentir et Matthias n’a pas abandonné son envie de détruire tous les habitants de Penton et surtout de récupérer son fils. Will et Randa patrouillent autour d’Oméga, essayant de comprendre ce que leur ennemi essaie de faire. De plus, comme nous l’avons vu précédemment, une sorte de relation commence à naître entre eux bien que Randa lutte comme elle le peut pour ne pas y succomber. C’était assez drôle de les voir évoluer tous les deux. De par leur passé, ils essaient tous deux de montrer leurs valeurs et leur loyauté envers Aidan. Mais Will est aussi bien décidé à contrecarrer les plans de son père quoi que cela puisse signifier.

C’était vraiment intéressant de suivre Will cette fois ci dans ce nouveau roman.  Malgré le personnage que nous croyons connaître dans les deux premiers, on découvre de toutes nouvelles facettes. Nous savions que notre héros avait dû surmonter de nombreux obstacles pour pouvoir échapper à son père mais pas ce que cela signifiait pour lui. C’était assez fou et triste de découvrir la vérité à son sujet. Il va se dévoiler à Cage et Randa petit à petit et on reste surpris par sa force et son courage. Mais ce n’est pas tout, Randa aussi est un personnage que nous allons apprendre à découvrir ici. C’est une jeune femme à l’allure fière et forte mais elle possède aussi une grande sensibilité et de nombreux doutes. Elle n’apprécie pas vraiment sa condition de vampire et fait tout pour oublier qui elle est véritablement bien que ce ne soit pas possible. Will va l’aider à évoluer, à comprendre et accepter ce qu’elle est. Bien sûr nous suivrons aussi Matthias et Cage ici. J’avoue que j’étais curieuse de voir ce que tous les deux avaient en réserve. L’un est assez fou et l’autre essaie de faire de son mieux pour aider Penton.

La guerre arrive plus vite que prévu, se présentant aux portes d’Omega, mais nos protagonistes Aidan, Mirren et les autres sont loin de capituler et sont prêts à se battre pour préserver la vie qu’ils se sont construits. Un nouveau très bon tome et j’aimerais beaucoup en apprendre plus sur Melissa et Cage à présent.

When Worlds Collide: Creating Heroes and Heroines
For an author, a vampire is in many ways the perfect hero. He can be from any era, setting up with his heroine the cultural clash of a time-travel without the actual time travel. He can be excused a certain amount of bad-boy behavior because he’s a) bored from all the “been there/done that”; b) had several lifetimes to build up bad habits; c) predatory by nature; d) just waiting for the perfect woman to make his long life worthwhile (even if he doesn’t know it).
The heroine in a vampire romance is usually a contemporary of the time period in which the book is set. My Penton Legacy series is set in the near future (think 2016) at a time in which a pandemic virus has resulted in a large number of people being vaccinated. Since the hapless humans don’t know vampires exist, they aren’t aware that the vaccine has changed blood chemistry just enough to poison any vamp who feeds on them.
So now, we have our bad-boy vampires with a new dilemma—they’re starving. Which just begs for a case of Vampires Behaving Badly.
We have good vampires and bad vampires, of course, but only the good vampires get a heroine of their very own. Who the heroine are depends, basically, on who will most push the hero’s buttons, and vice-versa.
In Aidan Murphy, the hero of Redemption (book one of the series), I had a 400-year-old vampire with a classic “protector” personality. He wants to take care of people. He has an overactive conscience; he wants to fix things. He’s very aware of vampires who act like predatory monsters, and he’s determined not to be one. He’s brooding and sensitive (his lieutenant Mirren, who is not sensitive in the least says he’s a walking vampire cliché).
So, for Aidan I developed a situation where he’d have no choice but to hold a woman against her will, to control her in a way that—to his dismay—is causing him to act exactly the opposite of how he wants to see himself. As for Krystal, she has her own issues—she has a problem with controlling men. As in … keep them away from her. So a vampire abductor doesn’t exactly push her romance buttons.
Then there’s Mirren Kincaid, the hero of Absolution (book two). Mirren is a big boy—6-8 and beefy. He has a “don’t bother me” personality. If he could live his life without talking, he’d be perfectly happy, and nothing annoys him more than to have people yapping at him. He has a reputation earned as a mercenary in 17th-century Scotland and Ireland, so people are afraid of him, which suits him just fine.
So what kind of woman did I find for Mirren? Meet Glory, a woman who looks at life without flinching. She’s strong and independent and doesn’t frighten easily. Mirren doesn’t scare her in the least. When she’s nervous she talks nonstop, and Mirren makes her nervous. When she’s threatened she takes action. Well, you can see where THAT’s going to lead. Fireworks.
Finally, we have Will, the hero of Omega (book three, out this week). Will was turned vampire in the late 1960s when he was only twenty-two years old. He had a horrible upbringing and as a result hides behind the facade of a playboy. He’s always quick with a joke. He romances the ladies. He handsome, and he knows it. He’s kind of a jerk.
So who does Aidan make his partner as they patrol their town of Penton? Why, a rigid, by-the-book former Army officer, of course. Randa is bossy and no-nonsense, and has no use for a rich, pretty playboy asshat, as she calls him. Talk about pushing buttons.
So in time for Valentine’s Day, there you have the dynamics of writing relationships. Pick a character, find out what will drive him or her the absolute craziest, and make sure the opposite character does exactly that!

Quand les mondes entrent en collision : Création des héros et héroïnes
Pour un auteur, un vampire est à bien des égards le héros parfait. Il peut être de n’importe quelle époque, placé auprès de son héroïne à la suite d’un choc culturel résultant d’un voyage dans le temps, sans que ce soit un voyage dans le temps réel. Il peut être exempt d’un comportement de bad-boy parce qu’il  a) en a assez d’”être là / faire cela»; b) a vécu plusieurs vies à se construire de mauvaises habitudes, c) est un prédateur par nature; d) attend tout simplement la femme parfaite pour faire de sa longue vie inutile quelque chose qui en vaille la peine (même s’il ne le sait pas).
L’héroïne d’une romance vampirique est généralement contemporaine de la période de temps pendant laquelle le livre est situé. Ma série Penton Legacy se déroule dans un futur proche (pensez à 2016) à un moment où un virus pandémique a donné lieu à une large campagne de vaccination. Comme les humains malchanceux ne savent pas que les vampires existent, ils ignorent donc que le vaccin a changé la chimie du sang, suffisamment pour empoisonner tout vampire qui s’en nourrit.
Du coup, nous avons nos vampires bad-boys qui sont confrontés à un nouveau dilemme: ils sont affamés. Ce qui nous amène justement au cas des Vampires qui se comportent mal.
Nous avons de bons vampires et de mauvais vampires, bien sûr, mais seuls les bons vampires obtiennent une héroïne qui leur est propre. Qui sont les héroïnes ? Cela dépend. Essentiellement ce sera celle qui sera le plus à même de toucher le héros et vice-versa.
En ce qui concerne Aidan Murphy, le héros de la Redemption (premier tome de la série), j’ai pris un vampire de 400 ans, avec une personnalité «protectrice» classique. Il veut prendre soin des gens. Il a une conscience hyperactive, il veut arranger les choses. Il est très conscient qu’il y a des vampires qui agissent comme des monstres prédateurs, et il est déterminé à ne pas en être l’un d’entre eux. Il est maussade et sensible (son lieutenant, Mirren, qui lui n’est pas sensible du tout, dit qu’il est un cliché ambulant).
Ainsi, pour Aidan, j’ai développé une situation où il n’aurait d’autre choix que de maintenir une femme contre sa volonté, de la contrôler d’une manière qui, à son grand désarroi, l’oblige à se comporter d’une manière totalement opposée de celle qu’il voudrait. En ce qui concerne Krystal, elle a ses propres soucis, elle a un problème avec les hommes qui aiment tout contrôler. Elle préfère les fuir. Ainsi, un ravisseur vampire n’est pas vraiment le type d’homme qui pourrait la séduire.
Ensuite, il y a Mirren Kincaid, le héros d’Absolution (tome deux). Mirren est un garçon grand et costaud. Sa personnalité est du style “ne me dérange pas”. S’il pouvait vivre sa vie sans parler, il serait parfaitement heureux, et rien ne l’agace plus que d’avoir des gens jacassent autour lui. Il a gagné sa réputation en tant que mercenaire au XVIIe siècle en Ecosse et en Irlande, les gens ont peur de lui, ce qui lui convient très bien.
Alors, quel genre de femme j’ai trouvé pour Mirren ? Faites connaissance avec Glory, une femme qui regarde la vie sans broncher. Elle est forte et indépendante et qu’on n’effraie pas facilement. Mirren ne l’effraie pas le moins du monde. Quand elle est nerveuse, elle parle sans arrêt, et Mirren la rend très nerveuse. Quand elle se sent menacée, elle prend les devants. Eh bien, vous pouvez voir où tout cela va mener. Un feu d’artifices.
Enfin, nous avons Will, le héros de Omega (tome 3, sorti cette semaine). Will a été transformé en vampire dans les années 1960 quand il n’avait que vingt-deux ans. Il a eu une éducation horrible. Résultat : il se cache derrière la façade d’un playboy. Il est toujours rapide pour ce qui est des blagues. Il fait la cour aux dames. Il est beau, et il le sait. C’est une sorte de crétin.
Alors, avec qui Aidan choisit-il de lui faire faire équipe pour patrouiller dans la ville de Penton ? Un ancien officier de l’armée bien sûr. Randa est autoritaire et sans fioritures, et n’a pas besoin d’un riche playboy, comme elle l’appelle. Elle sait comment le faire sortir de ses gongs.
Donc, à l’approche de la Saint-Valentin, vous avez là la dynamique en ce qui concerne  l’écriture des relations. Choisissez votre personnage, trouvez ce qui va le ou la conduire à la folie la plus absolue, et assurez-vous que le personnage en face fasse exactement cela!

Fallen Angels, Book 2

Review: I was eager to read this book. As I loved the first book, I was very happy to find Jim and his two sidekicks for a new mission. And I was not disappointed.

The story begins two days after the events of book 1. Jim, Adrian and Eddie leave Caldwell to go to Boston. It is there that Jim must complete his second mission: save Isaac Rothe’s soul. Isaac earns his living as an underground cage fighter. But during a police raid, he is arrested. To get through this, he must rely on Grier Childe, his court-appointed lawyer.

I must say that overall I loved it. Here, we don’t have any allusions to the BDB series. If Covet was a foretaste of this new world, with Crave we can say that we enter in the heart of the matter and this time, the battle between good and evil is really engaged. Here the mission takes a turn much more personal than in the previous book because Jim and Isaac know each other. They are both former members of the XOps, a top secret commando unit led by Matthias. Isaac had deserted the XOps, when the only way to leave this organization is in a coffin. Jim will not only have to fight for the soul of his friend, but he will also have to confront his former boss, Matthias who is determined to get rid of Isaac.

As for Covet, Crave is a little bit long to start but once you get past the first few chapters, the book is very hard to put down. The plot here is still well done. Jim is now a fallen angel. He has wings and can dematerialize himself every time he wants to. It was fun to see him learning all that. In book 1 we learn that there are seven souls at stake, seven chances for good or evil to prevail and he is the only one who can determine the fate of these seven souls. It was pretty impressive to see him doing his new job with his new powers but there are so many things he still doesn’t know about this fight … And his partners as well as his new boss, seem unwilling to reveal things to him.

Among the many points of views, we have Adrian’s POV, who is much more present in this book, as well as Nigel of course. I enjoyed these passages and I hope we will see them more in the next books. But the most fascinating thing in this book is the fact that we also have Devina’s POV! I loved these passages. It was interesting to discover her as she really is and learn all these things about her. I loved the way that the author tries to dedemonize her, and she does the same with Matthias.

I confess that I would have liked to see Jim experiencing his duality. Indeed, he has equally a part of good and a part of evil in him so I was expecting that he would be confronted with this inner conflict sooner or later but it is not the case. Instead, Jim seems determined to remain on the side of the good guys. His confrontations with his enemy are explosive, trying but also very intense. The demoness is determined to win this game at all costs, she doesn’t hesitate to cheat. We can’t help but wonder how all this situation will evolve. I loved the twist at the end, although I was expecting it.

In the end, I found this second book as good as the first one, except for the romance because I found it lacked a bit of spark. Indeed, I didn’t connect with Grier and Isaac. I was not as thrilled by their love story as I was by Vin and Marie-Terese. On the contrary I found they were rather insipid but however it was a great read and now I’m looking forward to read book 3.

Review: I love Janet Evanovich, well I should say that I love her Stephanie Plum series. I read the first volume of this new series to its output with much hope and I was a little disappointed. But knowing what to expect this time, I enjoyed this new story. Well it is for sure far from our Stephanie but Lizzy is also quite a character. This is a nice read once that we know the direction of the story.
 
Then I must say that I love Diesel, I adored him in the spin-offs and I still enjoy him here. He is so determined in his choice, and if our heroine does not agree with him, well then … what difference does it make? It is always quite funny as he arrives for her to do whatever he wants all times. Okay but not nearly in all circumstances. She is always brought in some terrible stories that make her discover some new aspects of the world where she lives.
 
Sure Wulf and Hatchet are there too and it was a delight to follow them. I must say that it’s hard to really understand them, they can in a second pass from the nicest person to the most wicked person of the world. Then see Hatchet ender some spells, what could be better? This is the most hilarious between laxatives, buttons or love, there are plenty problems. Well I admit that I preferred his character when he was in love with Glo. Well he doesn’t hesitate to do what he needs when he wants something. A serenade? Yes, yes, of course!
 
In this novel, the characters are all here and we meet Sandman, the same we saw in the  Stephanie Plum series, okay he didn’t do that much, but it’s really nice to see him. So here we find our little duo who always tries to cope with their attraction, in search of the stone of love/lust that everyone wants. Why is that? It is hard to say even if we understand pretty fast for Anarchy. However, for Wulf it is a different story. But finding that the stone is not a simple matter. This quest will lead them in places that they could not imagine.
 
This book was light and fun. A mixture always perfect when you are on vacation. I read with pleasure the whole adventure of our two protagonists. Well, when Janet Evanovich offers the Chick-lit story, I’m always up for it!

Lizzy & Diesel, Tome 2

Suivant les indices contenus dans un livre de sonnets du XIXe siècle, Lizzy et Diesel fouillent les catacombes de Boston, les bâtiments administratifs, et les résidences de milliardaires. Sur leur chemin, ils vont laisser derrière eux une trainée de tombes dépouillées, de nombreux problèmes d’ordre public, et le chaos général.

Le sombre cousin de Diesel, Gerwulf Grimoire, veut lui aussi la pierre. Ses motifs sont loin d’être purs, et personne ne sait ce qu’il compte faire du trésor… Mais Lizzy Tucker craint d’être sur son chemin. Toujours là et surveillant, Grimoire a évolué, intéressé par la pâtissière qui se trouve pouvoir retrouver les choses perdues. De même qu’un autre dangereux et sombre opposant s’ajoute à la chasse – une dévote de l’anarchie et du chaos, aussi connue en tant que Anarchy.

Les trésors seront trouvés, et le pouvoir de la luxure sera confirmé alors que Lizzy et Diesel essaient de surpasser Anarchy, Grimoire et son acolyte médiéval, Hatchet, à travers des énigmes tordues et un jeu de cache-cache.


Avis : J’adore Janet Evanovich, enfin je devrais dire que j’adore sa série Stephanie Plum. J’avais lu le premier tome de cette nouvelle série à sa sortie et avec autant d’espoir j’avais été un peu déçue. Mais Sachant à quoi m’attendre cette fois ci, j’ai beaucoup apprécié cette nouvelle histoire. Bon c’est sûr que Lizzy est loin de notre Stephanie mais c’est aussi un sacré personnage. C’est une lecture sympathique une fois que l’on connait la direction de l’histoire.

Puis il faut dire que j’adore Diesel, je l’adorais dans les spin-offs et je l’apprécie toujours autant ici. Il est si déterminé dans ses choix, et si notre héroïne n’est pas du même avis, eh ben… qu’est-ce que cela change ? C’est toujours assez drôle comme il arrive à lui faire faire tout ce qu’il veut en toutes circonstances. Bon d’accord pas en toutes circonstances mais presque. Elle se retrouve toujours embarquée dans des histoires abracadabrantes qui lui font découvrir de nouveaux aspects du monde dans lequel elle évolue.

Bien sûr Wulf et Hatchet sont là aussi et ça a été un régal de les suivre. Il faut dire qu’on a du mal à vraiment les comprendre, ils peuvent en une seconde, passer de la personne la plus gentille à la plus méchante du monde. Puis voir un Hatchet soumis à des sortilèges, que demander de mieux ? C’est des plus hilarant, entre les laxatifs, les boutons ou encore l’amour, il y a de quoi. Bon j’avoue que j’ai préféré son personnage alors qu’il était amoureux de Glo. Il faut dire qu’il n’y va pas de main morte quand il veut quelque chose. Une sérénade ? Si, si ! Comme dans les pièces de théâtre.

Dans ce roman tous nos personnages sont au rendez-vous et on rencontre même Sandman que nous avions vu dans Stéphanie Plum, bon d’accord il ne fait pas grand-chose mais c’est vraiment agréable. Nous retrouvons donc ici notre petit duo qui essaie toujours de faire face à leur attirance, en quête de la pierre de l’amour/luxure que tous veulent. Pourquoi ? C’est assez difficile à dire même si on comprend la raison assez vite pour Anarchy. Pour Wulf c’est une autre paire de manche. Mais il faut dire que trouver la pierre n’est pas non plus une mince affaire. Ça c’est sur et cette recherche va les mener dans des endroits que l’on ne pourrait pas soupçonner.

Ce livre était léger et distrayant. Un mélange toujours sympa quand on est en vacances. J’ai suivi avec plaisir toute l’aventure de nos deux protagonistes et je lirai la suite avec plaisir. Il ne me faut pas grand-chose, quand Janet Evanovich propose de la Chick-lit, je suis partante pour tout !

I’m thrilled to be able to talk about TEMPING IS HELL, and the Necessary Evil series. A lot of it comes from experiences I had when temping and working as a secretary (before I wrote full time.)  From the time I graduated from University, and even when I wrote my first ten books or so, I juggled writing and office life. And a good chunk of that time was spent in the San Francisco Bay Area – specifically, on the “east side,” or Oakland.

For years, Oakland has had a reputation of being sort of rough, seedy… “ghetto.”  I went to college in Berkeley, which is just north of Oakland, and lived just south of it.  I worked in Oakland for about five years.  

I fell in love with the city.  I would take the train, or sometimes the bus, headed to work.  There would be lots of places with graffiti and urban decay – broken windows, abandoned buildings.  But that made the pockets of sheer beauty that much more startling and stunning.  A roof-top garden on top of a strip mall.  A perfect rose on a grungy street.  The unassuming restaurants with the fantastic food.  The unexpected smiles and helping hands. 

There’s a quote that I found while writing this:  “Every saint has a past.  Every sinner has a future.”

TEMPING IS HELL is about Kate O’Hara, an irreverent temp who seems to have screwed up her life, and who seems to only makes things worse in her efforts to rectify the situation.  But it’s also about second chances, and finding the good where others only see the flawed.  Kate is funny, strong, smart – and more than people give her credit for.  

I love reading (and writing) about those kinds of heroes.  And I hope you enjoy reading about them, as well!

Je suis vraiment contente de pouvoir parler de TEMPTING IS HELL, et de la série Necessary Evil. Une grande partie vient de mes expériences quand je tentais de travailler en tant que secrétaire (avant que j’écrive à tant complet). Quand j’ai eu mon diplôme à l’université et même quand j’ai écris mes dix premiers livres, je jonglais entre l’écriture et le bureau. Et une grande partie de ce temps a été passé à San Francisco Bay Area – plus spécifiquement que la « côte est » or Oakland.

Pendant des années, Oakland a eu la réputation d’être assez dangereux, miteux… “ghetto”. Je suis allée au collège à Berkeley, qui est juste au nord d’Oakland et vécu juste en dessous. J’ai travaillé là pendant cinq ans. 

Je suis tombée amoureuse de la ville. Je prenais le train, or parfois le bus pour me rendre au travail. Il y avait de nombreux endroits avec des graffitis et de l’art de rue – des vitres cassées, des immeubles abandonnés. Mais cela faisait de quelques endroits jolis quelques choses de différent et magnifique. Un petit jardin sur le toit d’un centre commercial, une rose parfaite dans une rue sale. Les restaurants sans prétention avec de la nourriture fantastique. Les sourires inattendus et les mains tendues.

TEMPING IS HELL parle de Kate O’Hara, une vacataire téméraire qui semble avoir raté sa vi, et qui semble ne faire qu’empirer les choses en essayant de rectifier la situation. Mais c’est aussi au sujet des secondes chances, et la volonté de trouver le bien quand les autres ne voient que quelque chose de défectueux. Kate est drôle, forte, intelligente – et plus que ce que les gens pensent. 

J’adore lire (et écrire) sur ce genre de héros. Et j’espère que vous aimerez les lire aussi !

Synopsis: WORST. JOB. EVER.
