Kiss of Frost by Jennifer Estep (VO)

Mythos Academy, Book 2

Synopsis: Logan Quinn was trying to kill me. My Spartan classmate relentlessly pursued me, swinging his sword at me over and over again, the shining silver blade inching closer to my throat every time. A smile tugged up his lips, and his ice-blue eyes practically glowed with the thrill of battle …

I’m Gwen Frost, a second-year warrior-in-training at Mythos Academy, and I have no idea how I’m going to survive the rest of the semester. One day, I’m getting schooled in swordplay by the guy who broke my heart — the drop-dead gorgeous Logan who slays me every time. Then, an invisible archer in the Library of Antiquities decides to use me for target practice. And now, I find out that someone at the academy is really a Reaper bad guy who wants me dead. I’m afraid if I don’t learn how to live by the sword — with Logan’s help — I just might die by the sword …
Review: I really enjoyed the first novel and I was very curious to get into the second one to see if my feelings would stay the same. I confess I have a preference for the first one which was very unpredictable and the end was a total surprise. Well, for this volume it’s a little different. Of course there are a lot a new surprises but I think there are some facts we understand quite easily while it’s not the case for Gwen at all. It’s quite frustrating sometimes because we would like to shake her so she could understand what is going on, but it’s impossible.
We find of course, all the characters from the first novel and we learn a lot about some who only were in the background. We even learn some information about the hero. And I can say it’s a real pleasure to learn so many things like that. I’m always so curious and I think it’s the reason why I love these moments.
So we start the story with our little Gwen who isn’t very motivated to go skiing with the whole school, but thanks to Daphne, here they are, for a new adventure in a new environment. While Gwen decides to search by herself who tried to kill her, the others have fun, days and nights.
This story is a fast read like for the first one, the reminders about the Gwen’s mum
death weren’t a problem with me this time. It was a little too redundant in the first volume, but this time it wasn’t the case. We also learn some new facts, futures and past that will change the fate of our heroine. Of course, it’s not a lot yet, but they will lead us little by little to something much more bigger. Therefore, it’s true that when we finished the book, we wish we could have quite fast the sequel to understand what will be going on now (and it’s worse when we read the first chapter of book 3!).
The writing style is fluid and the book is well written. A good novel despite I told you my preference is for the first one, but this one makes us even more curious about the story. It sets some new bases which will surely be deepened soon. The universe is always interesting and we enjoy all the characters. It was a real pleasure to evolve in this new environment, with the snow, the mountain, with some new creatures.

  1. LOL aren’t those sneak peaks to the next book in the series like torture items?? They always tease you into craving the next novel even more! x) I find that the first book is almost always a bit better than the sequel too, but Kiss of Frost still sounds SO GOOD (especially with the promise of a cool ski trip)! 😉

Amazing review, Mel! I just can’t wait to start this series — Jennifer Esptep is on my must-read-authors list!! 🙂

    • Aaah it was terrible! REALLY! I think they do a good job for that lol. Yes now I’m so curious to know how Dark Frost will be. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it when you’ll start the series. Thank you Mimi!

    • I’ve only read the first one of the adult series but I have the second and third book, I also have Karma girl, so many books to read lol. Hope you’ll enjoy them all!

  2. Oooh, Melliane, this one sounds fun! I’ve been looking forward to reading it for months, and I’m glad you liked it, even if you still preferred the first. I’ve read Jennifer’s Elemental Assassin series, and really liked them, but I had a problem with the repetition, and had the same issue with Gwen’s mum in the first book. Glad it wasn’t such an issue here! Great review xx

    • I was afraid to be the only one, I’m happy it was the same for you. I hope you’ll enjoy it when you’ll read this one too. I need to read the second one of the Elemental Assassin series, I have book 2 and 3. I just need more time lol. thank you.

  3. I agree completely with you. I thought Gwen was a bit naive, it was very obvious who the villain was and I couldn’t believe she didn’t notice anything wrong with him. I’m looking forward to next book, I want to see how Logan is going to behave from now on. Great review.

    • I thought she was more clever in the first book, so many things happened, it’s strange she didn’t notice anything. I totally agree with you, I’m curious to know what will be going on now.
