Synopsis: Sometimes being the grim reaper really is that. Grim. And since Charley’s last case went so awry, she has taken a couple months off to wallow in the wonders of self-pity. But when a woman shows up on her doorstep convinced someone is trying to kill her, Charley has to force herself to rise above. Or at least get dressed. She quickly realizes something is amiss when everyone the woman knows swears she’s insane. The more they refute the woman’s story, the more Charley believes it.
In the meantime, the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, has been cleared of all charges. He is out of prison and out of Charley’s life, as per her wishes and several perfectly timed death threats. But his absence has put a serious crimp in her sex life. While there are other things to consider, like the fact that the city of Albuquerque has been taken hostage by an arsonist, Charley is having a difficult time staying away. Especially when it looks like Reyes may be involved. Just when life was returning to normal, Charley is thrust back into the world of crime, punishment, and the devil in blue jeans.
Charley Davidson, Book 4
Review: I was so curious to be able to read this fourth book! Well, it’s true it’s like that at each end of a new Charley’s book, but you know… I’m totally a fan of this series! It’s impossible to dislike Charley or Reyes.
Our heroine still has a lot of problems to deal with since the events of the previous volume and we completely understand that. But her anguish becomes such that she doesn’t even leave her house anymore and stays cloistered, feeling sorry for herself despite the help of the people who love her. However, everything changes when Harper comes to see her and asks for help, thinking that someone is trying to kill her. A very interesting case, but actually quite complicated to understand because nobody really believes in Harper. In addition to this, the company is at its lowest since Charley moved her office out to not see her father and she is now determined to make Reyes pay nearly a million dollars for all that she has endured because him. Well I must say that he has other things in mind, especially since he is fighting against the demons who are looking for him.
You can imagine that I loved this novel as the others. Well the Charley’s arguments are always so fun! We never expect what she will replicate and each answer is more imaginative than the last. Every time I thought it was a really great idea and I would never have thought to say something like that. Our heroine is equal to herself all along the book and it is a pleasure to follow her as she attracts all the problems like in the previous volume. We can’t be bored!
I wondered if we would have the opportunity to see Donovan and Garrett here, because I admit that I have a soft spot for both of them as well. I was a bit anxious at first but I was pretty surprised to read about them here again. They are still a little less present than what I expected but Reyes replaces them perfectly. Well, with Reyes in the room, we don’t need anyone else. I wondered how their relationship would evolve or what would happen, and what is certain now is that we are far from being disappointed.
I also enjoyed the plot of the story in relation to Harper and I did not expect in any way the revelations at the end of the book. It was finally logical but I confess that I stayed a bit stupid to not have thought of it. But it is also the case for everything. I expected, however, the revelation about the apartment in the Charley’s building but it’s true that I spent some time thinking about the person who could choose to live here. All this to say that the whole story is well put together and all the characters are perfectly staged. I’m still a big fan of the comments on the T-shirts at the beginning of each chapter, which are always really fun.
I believe that if you haven’t tried the first book of Charley series yet, you really miss something. Charley is funny, giddy, crazy, brave but also everything we can love in a heroine, and all this makes that all these books are a series that I highly recommend.
