As of the writing of this post, there are 153 days until THE SHARPEST BLADE hits the shelves in the U.S. That’s five months from now (just a little over four months from the posting of the blog). By the time the third book is released, over a year will have passed since the second book in the trilogy, THE SHATTERED DARK, was published.
I know readers are going a little crazy over this wait, especially with the way the second book ended, but you know who’s going even more crazy than them?
Me! The wait is absolutely killing me.
I turned in my copy edits in June. I’m filling my days with my current manuscript – a fun, sexy, action-packed sci-fi romance – but I’m always aware of just how far off December 31st is. I constantly think of McKenzie’s story and wonder what readers will think of it. Will they hate me for that one thing that happens? Will they be happy with the way that other thing resolves? Will they enjoy the story, the characters, the setting?
I’ve lost sleep worrying over this. I’m the type of author who reads every review, good and bad, despite everyone telling me not to. I enjoy reading reviews, even the ones who hated the books (the bad ones usually make me laugh out loud; I guess I have a thick skin and a good sense of humor). So every time I read a review where a reader is dying – and usually cursing my name – because they can’t wait for THE SHARPEST BLADE, I want to email them the manuscript and say, “Yes! I have the answers! They’re all right here in this book!” Honestly, the only thing keeping me from sending my book to everyone who wants it is that I’m bound by contract not to. It’s still so, so difficult to keep it to myself.
When I finished the first two Shadow Reader books, I was still immersed in McKenzie’s world. But since THE SHARPEST BLADE is the last book of the trilogy, I’ve had to move on to new characters and a new world. I had no idea I would miss McKenzie and her friends this much! I was anxious to reach The End of the series. I have a super short attention span, so I’m always wanting to move on to the next Big Thing. Now, I want to go back in time and continue hanging out with McKenzie and exploring the Realm.
I’m sure the next few months will move quickly. New Year’s Eve will be here before we know it, and then readers will finally get to read what happens next. I won’t be the only one who knows what happens in the Realm. I won’t be the only one who knows who survives to the story’s end, and who doesn’t.

Je sais que les lecteurs n’en peuvent plus de l’attente, surtout avec une telle fin dans le second tome, mais vous savez qui est encore plus folle qu’eux ?
Moi ! L’attente me tue !
J’ai rendu l’histoire éditée en Juin. Je passé mes journées avec mon manuscrit du moment, une romance de science fiction drôle, sexy et pleine d’action – mais je me rends toujours compte du temps qu’il faudra pour arriver au 31 décembre. Je pense constamment à l’histoire de McKenzie et je me demande ce que les lecteurs vont en penser. Vont-ils me demander pour cette chose qui va se passer ? Vont-ils être contents par la façon dont tout se résout ? Vont-ils aimer l’histoire, les personnages, l’intrigue ?
J’en ai perdu le sommeil. Je suis le genre d’auteur qui lit chaque critique, même celles de ceux qui ont détesté les livres (les mauvaises me font souvent rire, je pense que j’ai un bon sens de l’humour). Alors chaque fois que je lis un avis où le lecteur n’est pas content – et maudit souvent mon nom – parce qu’il a hâte de lire THE SHARPEST BLADE, j’aimerais leur écrire et leur dire “Oui! J’ai les réponses ! Elles sont là dans ce livre ! ” Honnêtement, la seule chose qui m’empêche d’envoyer le livre à tout le monde c’est que je suis liée par un contrat pour ne pas le faire. Mais même c’est toujours très difficile de le garder pour moi.
Quand j’ai fini les deux premiers livres Shadow Reader, j’étais toujours immerge dans le monde de McKenzie. Mais depuis THE SHARPEST BLADE, le dernier tome de la trilogie, je suis passée à de nouveaux personnages et un nouveau monde. Je ne savais pas que McKenzie et ses amis me manqueraient autant ! J’étais anxieuse d’arriver à la Fin de la série. Je n’ai jamais eu une très grande attention et je veux toujours passer à la nouvelle grosse chose. Maintenant, je veux revenir dans le temps et continuer à rester avec McKenzie et explorer le monde.
Je suis sure que les prochains moins vont passer vite. Le nouvel an sera là avant même qu’on le sache, et les lecteurs pourront finalement lire ce qu’il va se passer ensuite. Je ne serais pas la seule qui sait ce qu’il se passe dans le royaume. Je ne serais pas la seule qui sait qui survit à la fin de l’histoire et qui ne survit pas.

I have never really considered what it’s like for authors to have the answers to the questions that pain readers without being able to share them. This interview certainly clarifies that the long wait for a sequel can be painful to both author and reader! This is a new series to me as well, but if I wait a little I will be able to finish it without any enforced waits in between! 🙂
