Interview: Sierra Dean & Concours/Giveaway (+traduction)

Welcome to Sierra Dean, the author of many wonderful series that I can only recommend you.

————–

Can you present you in a few words?

Funny, ridiculous, overachieving, busy. Basically I do way too much, but it’s what I love, so I keep adding onto the pile.

What would you most like potential readers to know about you and/or your books?

They aren’t your average urban fantasy or romance. I work very hard at making my characters real people, even when the situations they’re in can be crazy. If readers want perfect, flawless characters, these aren’t them. If they want real, complicated individuals, they should try my books.

If you could, would you change places with any of your characters?

In the Secret McQueen universe I think I’d only switch places with Mercedes. She gets into the thick of things but keeps a level head. I think she’s a great character. In all my books overall, I’ll probably love to swap places with Emmy from my Boys of Summer series. Cool job, hot pitcher boyfriend, pretty good deal.

When you sit down and write do you know how the story will end or do you just let the pen take you?

I usually know where the story needs to go and what needs to happen for it to get there, but aside from that I just go with the flow.

Whats the hardest scene for you to write?

There’s a scene towards the end of A Secret To Die For that I’ve known was coming for the whole series. When I finally wrote it I started to cry because I felt so much for my characters in that moment. It’s tough because as a writer you know the scene has to happen, but as someone who loves the characters you don’t necessarily want to do it.

What was the first novel (published or unpublished) that you wrote and how long did it take to write it?

Something Secret This Way Comes was actually the first book I ever finished writing. It took my close to 5 years to finish it. Since then my productivity has picked up a lot.

In your opinion, what are the best and worst aspects of writing for a living?

The toughest part is to force myself to sit down and work every day. The best part is that I have the freedom to set my own hours and I can do things in my own time.

How do you find your titles? Did you imagine them all when you started the series or do you brainstorm each time?

In the case of the Secret McQueen books I originally wasn’t planning to use her name in the titles! What a silly thing to pass up. My editor was the one who suggested taking advantage of Secret’s name and from that point on I had to pick titles that fit within the theme. For other books I tend to pick fun, cheeky names that stand out by are related to the topic.

If you could pick a place to live, anyplace where would that be?

Easy. San Francisco. I love California, and I wish I could live there.

What authors have been an influence for you? And have you read any books lately that you want to share with us or have you been too busy with writing to read?

I get inspiration from everywhere, but I guess my biggest influences before I got published were Laurel K Hamilton and Charlaine Harris. I don’t read a ton of urban fantasy anymore, but graphic novels are huge for me at the moment so I like to see what comic writers are doing and let that inspire me.

Are there any other projects you’re working on or thinking about starting in the near future?

Definitely! I’m working on the third Boys of Summer book right now, as well as a Secret-related project that I’m keeping hush hush for a little longer before I announce anything!

The giveaway is international. Any ebook of choice from my catalogue.

Thanks!

  1. You had me at ‘They aren’t your average urban fantasy or romance‘. Great interview! I love San Francisco as well and Laurell K. Hamilton has always been one of my favourite authors. 🙂

  2. Yay! Sierra Dean. Her Autumn novel was one of the first ARCs that I’ve requested from Netgalley when I was just a newbie blogger. And it was good. I already have the second book, Winter, which I am dying to read but still can’t because of the ARCs.

Happy that you have interviewed her, Mel. Autumn really stayed with me. Once I’m done with the Dog Days series, I may try her McQueen series.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  3. I happen to really like overachievers, possibly because I am one myself. Also, for me, character is more important than anything else, so I think it’s really awesome that Sierra puts extra effort into them. I’m a huge UF fan. Thanks for sharing, ladies.

  4. I love people who see themselves as funny. They usually are and from this interview the author really seems like a funny person. However I really love that characters in her books are real and close to read people as usually in UF books they are perfect kind 🙂 Great interview 🙂

  5. Since I saw this series on Carmel’s blog, I have my eye on it. The cover doesn’t do the series justice but as I trust y’all’s recommendations and judgment, I know this is a good one!

5 years to write and complete a book, that’s something, very inspiring. If I’m writing a book I’d think I’ll be finished with my first draft in a month. Thank God I have no plans of writing one otherwise I’ve given up way before I started.
