Nice Dragons Finish Last by Rachel Aaron

Heartstrikers, Book 1

Synopsis: As the smallest dragon in the Heartstriker clan, Julius survives by a simple code: keep quiet, don’t cause trouble, and stay out of the way of bigger dragons. But this meek behavior doesn’t fly in a family of ambitious magical predators, and his mother, Bethesda the Heartstriker, has finally reached the end of her patience.

Now, sealed in human form and banished to the DFZ–a vertical metropolis built on the ruins of Old Detroit–Julius has one month to prove that he can be a ruthless dragon or kiss his true shape goodbye forever. But in a city of modern mages and vengeful spirits where dragons are considered monsters to be exterminated, he’s going to need some serious help to survive this test.

He only hopes humans are more trustworthy than dragons…

Review: I heard so much about this series and having loved the author’s SF series under the name of Rachel Bach, I was eager to immerse myself in this new story! And how to resist dragons?

Julius is not the dragon that his family would like him to be. He misses all the traits of individualism, egocentricity, the desire to dominate the world, well everything … No Julius is just nice and his mother can not take it anymore! So, she throws him out one day and tells him that if he does not do something in his life she will eat him. This is a real threat. Even worse, she sends him to DFZ, the only city that eradicates dragons, and Julius knows he’ll have to be careful not to get too much attention. Yet one of his brothers is waiting for him and offers him a job. He must try to find a wrist that has run away to bring her back to her family. Without money, without friends (because hey, the dragons must not have any!), he will ally himself with a girl, Marci, who runs away from her problems. Together, they will do everything to find the runaway, but it will be far from simple.

I had a great time with this novel although seeing all the praise I expected to be a little more blown away. However, I must say that it was a very good discovery and I loved discovering Julius and his whole a bit crazy family. It was also nice to find a real urban fantasy without romance and so to go back to the sources! Our protagonist has all of the anti-heroes and I also found it very nice for a change. Marci is also a great character to follow and I loved her ghost cat! Their adventure takes us completely away and I am curious to discover what will happen to them now!

  1. I listened to the series and I’m not sure how much the wonderful narration added to the story (I have had that happen to me several times where the narration really brings a ‘meh’ story to life). I will say that the stories get better and better.
