Don’t Rush Me by Jackie May

Nora Jacobs, Book 1

Synopsis: Most humans have no idea that a dark and deadly underworld, filled with magic and monsters, exists. They wander through life blissfully ignorant of the supernatural world around them. Nora Jacobs is different. Nora knows exactly what kinds of hellish creatures haunt the streets of Detroit.

Thanks to a unique set of psychic abilities, Nora has managed to steer clear of the underworld most of her life. But all that changes the night the most powerful vampire in the city discovers her gifts and decides to use her as a tool to find one of his missing clan members.

As if that’s not bad enough, Nora believes she’s cursed. All her life, people, especially men, have been drawn to her—some to the point of obsession and violence. Underworlders, it seems, are not immune to this curse, and now she’s caught the attention of some of the most dangerous monsters in the city.

Neck deep in an investigation only she can solve, Nora quickly makes as many new allies as she does enemies. Her biggest problem is staying alive long enough to decide which is which.

Review: Since the release of the French version, I see the novel everywhere and I admit that I was curious. I’m not necessarily a big fan of reverse harem, but since I haven’t read much of the genre, I thought it was a good opportunity to try it out.

Nora Jacobs has a rather special gift: she can hear people’s thoughts by touching them, she can also discover the story of an object by touching it too, and it’s quite complicated to deal with. But when her sadistic neighbour decides to kidnap her on her birthday, she decides that the only way out is to go to a club called the Occult, which normally brings together many supernatural creatures. However, that’s also when the trouble starts for her!

I found the novel quite enjoyable to read and I won’t say no to find out what happens next, even though I’m not necessarily in a hurry. I still had a hard time with the reverse harem. Yes, because every man who meets Nora becomes obsessed with her. And if she’s afraid of men, they all want her. I also had a little trouble with Nora’s nature, she who knew nothing about this world, assimilates all that a little too quickly and the people she meets quickly become her greatest friends. I found that not very credible.

Apart from that, it was a decent novel, even if I expected more.
