Detective Kathy Mallory is counting on herself to save his life. It takes her a while to realise that the missing-person case she is pursuing is so intimately connected to the massacre on the mayor’s lawn. But she will find Jonah – she just hopes it will be in time.

Review: If there is a detective series that I love to follow it is Kathy Mallory. I must admit that sometimes you have to be patient as the volumes can take several years to come out but it is always a treat to embark on every new adventure.

If you know the series, you know that Kathy is not a mere policeman and she is now facing a new case that could be much more complicated than expected. Indeed, a nun disappeared as well as her nephew and while she is found dead in the mayor’s garden with other people, the boy has disappeared. Our detective is determined to find him whatever may happen, but will she be able to do so in time?

It was really interesting to see the behavior of this blind boy who manages to do a lot of things despite the conditions in which he finds himself, it’s impressive to see how he plays to try to manipulate this killer. Regarding Mallory, she threw herself into the heart on this story, manipulating everyone to achieve her ends.

I will not say more, but I can only advise you to discover the series if you like the detective stories. It was a very nice surprise but I am surprised to have spent so much time finishing this twelfth volume. I hope that we will have a new novel very soon because it was a pleasure to find all the characters once again.

Jonah Quill, aveugle depuis sa naissance, est assis dans une voiture conduite par un tueur et se demande où ils vont. Bien qu’aveugle, Jonas voit plus que la plupart des gens. Il compte sur ce secret pour lui sauver la vie.

Puis l’autre disparu.


La détective Kathy Mallory ne compte que sur elle-même pour sauver sa vie. Il lui faut un certain temps pour se rendre compte que l’affaire de personnes disparues qu’elle poursuit est intimement liée au massacre sur la pelouse du maire. Mais elle trouvera Jonah – elle espère juste que ce sera à temps.

Avis : S’il y a une série policière que j’adore suivre c’est bien Kathy Mallory. Je dois avouer qu’il faut parfois être patient comme les tomes peuvent mettre plusieurs années à sortir mais c’est toujours un régal de se lancer dans chaque nouvelle aventure. Vous voulez une bonne nouvelle ? C’est une série traduite en Français et dont les livres sont à jour et je suis persuadée que ce nouveau tome ne va pas tarder à arriver aussi !

Si vous connaissez la série, vous savez que Kathy n’est pas une policière banale et la voilà maintenant face à une nouvelle affaire qui pourrait bien être bien plus compliquée que prévue. En effet, une nonne a disparue ainsi que son neveu et est retrouvée morte dans le jardin du maire avec d’autres personnes, le jeune garçon a lui disparu. Notre détective est bien déterminée à le retrouver quoi qu’il puisse se passer, mais le pourra-t-elle à temps ?

C’était vraiment intéressant de voir le comportement de ce jeune garçon aveugle qui parvient à faire énormément de choses malgré les conditions dans lesquelles il se trouve, c’est impressionnant de voir la façon dont il joue pour essayer de manipuler ce tueur. De son côté Mallory se lance à cœur perdu dans cette histoire, en manipulant tout le monde pour arriver à ses fins.

Je ne vais pas en dire plus, mais je ne peux que vous conseiller de découvrir la série si vous aimez les policiers. C’était une très bonne surprise mais je suis étonnée d’avoir mis tant de temps à finir ce douzième tome. J’espère que nous aurons un nouveau roman très bientôt car c’était un plaisir de retrouver tous les personnages une fois de plus.

Review: Carol O’Connell is one of my favorite authors for mystery novels. Her Katy Mallory series is really fascinating and always full of ideas. So when I came across this other book, I did not hesitate long. As I do not read a lot of thriller novels, it was therefore a very good opportunity to go back to the genre.

Oren returns home after years of absence, leaving the army, where he has made more than his proofs to care for his dying father, or at least that’s what he believes. When he arrives at home, he realizes that the letters from Hannah, the housekeeper, expressing the near death of her boss, are quite far from the truth. Indeed, not only the judge is in perfect health but he had also hidden a terrible secret, something that will upset them both as well as the city. Once upon a time lived two brothers who loved each other enormously, but one of them, Josh, had a particular passion for photography. A passion that led him to follow and observe people, learning their secrets. But one day, the two brothers went into the forest and only one emerged: Oren. Since that day Oren blames himself the disappearance of his brother, and when he discovers that his father receives parts of the body of his younger brother on his porch, he is determined to find out what is happening. But the city has more secrets than we might think and people know more than they want to admit. Despite the link between him and his deceased brother, Oren decides to understand what happened and to find out who the killer is. And I must say that we embark on a totally crazy story. All the inhabitants of the city are unique and pay attention to what they say. We follow the tracks with our former military, seeking to know the truth about each person, discovering more than he would have thought. Plots, love, betrayal, madness, are a good mix for this book.

I really enjoyed understanding and determining with Oren who the culprit was. And it was actually very difficult to know what had happened. Everyone thinks they know who the murderer is and many lie in the hope of protecting their loved ones. But our investigator will manage to determine the truth in the lies. And although I doubted many times, the assassin was really well found. This is a very interesting psychological game and I loved every moment of this quest, reviving the past of each character and discovering a little better who was the brother he thought he knew.

So it was a very good book and if you are a fan of thrillers, I will particularly recommend this one to you. A nice surprise and I was very frustrated not being able to read the whole book at once because I really wanted to understand everything and put the pieces in place.

Personne ne sait ce qui est arrivé à Josh qui reste introuvable. Vingt ans plus tard, Oren, l’autre frère devenu enquêteur fédéral, revient à Conventry pour la première fois depuis le drame. Sur le porche de la maison familiale, il découvre des ossements humains, une mâchoire déposée devant la porte. Une mise en scène macabre qui se répète les jours suivants : c’est Josh, son frère disparu, qui revient à la maison… os par os. Oren se plonge dans ce mystère vieux de vingt ans pour tenter de savoir, enfin, ce qui est arrivé à son frère. Il découvre que la petite ville, en apparence bien tranquille, recèle des secrets que certains voudraient garder profondément enfouis…

Avis : Carol O’Connell est un des auteurs que je préfère pour les romans policiers. Sa série Katy Mallory est vraiment fascinante et toujours pleine d’idées. Alors quand je suis tombée sur cet autre roman, je n’ai pas hésité longtemps. D’autant plus que je ne lis pas énormément de thriller, alors c’était une très bonne occasion de m’y remettre.

Oren rentre chez lui après des années d’absence, quittant l’armée où il a fait plus que ses preuves, pour s’occuper de son père mourant ou du moins c’est ce qu’il croit. Quand il arrive chez lui, il se rend compte que les lettres d’Hannah, la gouvernante, lui faisant part du décès proche de son géniteur, sont assez loin de la vérité. En effet, non seulement le juge est en parfaite santé mais en plus il lui a caché un secret assez terrible, quelque chose qui les bouleversera tous les deux de même que toute la ville. Il était une fois deux frères qui s’aimaient énormément, mais un des deux, Josh, avait une passion particulière pour la photographie. Une passion qui le mena à suivre et observer les gens, apprenant leurs secrets. Mais un jour, les deux frères se rendirent dans la forêt et un seul en est ressorti : Oren. Depuis ce jour Oren culpabilise de la disparition de son frère, et quand il découvre que son père reçoit le corps de son jeune frère sur son porche en bout, il est bien déterminé à trouver ce qu’il se passe. Mais la ville recèle plus de secrets que l’on ne pourrait le croire et les habitants en savent plus que ce qu’ils ne veulent l’avouer. Malgré le lien qui l’unit à son frère décédé, Oren est décidé à comprendre ce qu’il s’est passé et à trouver qui est le tueur. Et je dois dire qu’il nous embarque dans une histoire totalement folle. Tous les habitants de la ville sont particuliers et font attention à ce qu’ils disent. On suivra les pistes de notre ex militaire, cherchant à découvrir la vérité sur chacun, en découvrant bien plus sur chaque personne qu’il ne l’aurait pensé. Des complots, de l’amour, de la trahison, de la folie, voilà ce qui fait le livre.

J’ai vraiment beaucoup aimé comprendre et déterminer avec Oren qui était le coupable. Et c’était finalement très difficile d’arriver à savoir ce qu’il s’était passé. Chacun pense savoir qui est le meurtrier et nombreux mentent dans l’espoir de protéger leur proche. Mais notre enquêteur arrivera à déterminer la vérité des mensonges. Et bien que j’aie douté à de nombreuses fois, et que je me sois moi-même prise la tête à de multiples moments, l’assassin était vraiment bien trouvé. C’est un jeu psychologique très intéressant et j’ai adoré suivre chaque instant de sa quête, faisant renaître le passé de chacun et découvrant un peu mieux qui était le frère qu’il pensait connaître.

C’était donc un très bon livre et si vous êtes adepte de thriller, je vous le conseille particulièrement. Une jolie surprise, et j’étais très frustrée de ne pas pouvoir lire tout le livre en une seule fois car on aimerait vraiment tout comprendre et mettre les pièces du puzzle en place.

Parfois un peu de magie peut bien vous couter plus cher que ce que vous l’auriez pensé…
Londres est le témoin d’un Carnaval Fantastique et le travail de Genny n’a jamais été aussi occupée ou plus accomplit. Seulement, beaucoup ne sont pas heureux. Genny croit qu’elle a détruit la malédiction d’infertilité des faes… mais les faes sont toujours stériles. C’est un sort dévastateur auquel le mystérieux Empereur pourrait avoir une solution – Si Genny peut le trouver.
Elle a besoin d’aide.
Elle se tourne vers le vampire Malik al-Khan, seulement pour découvrir qu’il s’occupe de ses propres démons et, quand la police demande l’assistance de Genny pour un kidnapping magique, ses propres problèmes se multiplient eux aussi. However, her nightwalker self is becoming dangerously attracted to Gideon. review: It’s impressive when I think I read the last book many years ago. I didn’t expect a sequel after all this time… So what a surprise when I discovered that a tenth volume would be out! I was so happy and I confess I was a little anxious that the series could finish like that since I always had a lot of questions and some unaccomplished hopes about our heroine.
Well it’s true it hasn’t any paranormal elements in it, but what a pleasure to follow this new story! Mallory is back, tougher than ever. Everyone has a lot of questions about her absence but nobody is brave enough to ask her the reason. And like always, all the characters are present for our great pleasure.
Carol O’Connell takes us in a new complex novel where we will suspect a lot of characters little by little. Indeed, I confess I didn’t expect a such development of the story. All the elements are linked in a way we didn’t know about and many characters are called in question… It was just awesome. Mallory has to deal with a lot of problems and we wonder how she can manage it. Nobody seems to understand her, not even Charles. Well Riker seems to be the only person who can see a little part of the truth, and it’s really pleasant to know he would do anything to protect her. I was very surprised by the Charles attitude in this volume, he is so different from the other novels. He wants to assert himself and he doesn’t understand that Mallory does everything she can to protect this little Coco. But more than that, he turns the only persons she trusted, against her. However Mallory isn’t a person who can show her feelings and she keeps everything for herself to develop some little revenge and she can be very rancorous.
Coco, this young girl, so different from the others, is so sweet. I didn’t know this pathology, and I don’t know if it truly exists, but we understand all the feelings immediately. She is so cute, she only wants someone to love her, and she wants this person to be Mallory, the one she loves the most in the world. We understand the Charles doubts for the intention of our heroine, but we also understand the determination of our investigator for resolving this case. Mallory is perhaps different from the other women, without a doubt, but she tried to take care of Coco in her own way.
The story is really sad and complex, and it’s true I didn’t expect a such novel. But I really enjoyed the whole story. We ask ourselves a lot of questions about these chapters headers written by a character we don’t know anything about. I wondered at first if it wasn’t some citations, but well, not at all. We can only learn the real reason later in the book and it’s very important to read all of them to understand the story.
We think, we doubt, we understand the characters little by little. I don’t read a lot of detective books but I really enjoy this one. Each volume is full of emotions and I really hope we would have an eleventh volume because I’m sure of it, Mallory, Riker, Charles and all the band still have a lot of surprises for us.

C’est tombé du ciel, dit-elle, quand elle était à la recherche de son oncle, qui s’est transformé en arbre. Pauvre enfant, pensèrent-ils tous. Mais ensuite ils trouvèrent un corps dans l’arbre.

Pour Mallory, fraichement revenue dans l’Unité Spéciale des Crimes après trois mois sans nouvelles, il y a quelque chose au sujet de cette fille qu’elle comprend. Ils disent que Mallory est endommagée, mais elle sait reconnaitre un esprit comme le sien. Et celui-ci va la mener à une histoire de crimes extraordinaires : des meurtres s’étant déroulés quinze ans auparavant, chantage et complicité et une cruauté particulière que seule une personne ayant une histoire telle que Mallory peut reconnaitre. Dans les semaines suivantes, elle va devoir tout gérer… à sa propre manière.

Avis: C’est impressionnant quand je me dis que j’ai lu le tome précédent il y a plusieurs années. Je ne m’attendais plus vraiment à une suite… Alors quelle surprise quand j’ai découvert qu’un dixième tome allait sortir ! J’étais vraiment contente car j’avoue que j’avais un peu peur que la série se termine ainsi avec encore de nombreuses questions et de nombreux espoirs inaccomplis au sujet de notre héroïne.
Bon c’est vrai ce livre n’a rien avoir avec le surnaturel mais quel plaisir de suivre cette nouvelle histoire ! Mallory est de retour plus coriace que jamais. Tout le monde se pose des questions sur son absence mais personne n’a le courage de lui demander quoi que ce soit. Comme toujours tous les personnages sont présents pour notre plus grand plaisir.
Carol O’connell nous emmène dans une nouvelle histoire complexe où l’on suspectera de nombreux personnages petit à petit. J’avoue que d’ailleurs je ne m’étais vraiment pas attendu à un tel déroulement de l’histoire. Tous les éléments sont liés, de nombreux personnages sont remis en cause… C’est génial. Mallory va devoir gérer de nombreux soucis et on se demande encore comment elle fait tout ça. Personne ne semble vraiment la comprendre, pas même Charles. Bon Riker semble être la seule personne qui entraperçoit la vérité, et c’est assez agréable de voir qu’une personne semble prête à tout pour la protéger. J’ai vraiment été surprise par l’attitude de Charles dans ce tome, il est si différent des autres romans. Il veut s’affirmer plus, mais n’arrive pas à voir que Mallory fait tout pour protéger cette petite Coco. Mais en plus de cela, il retourne contre elle les seules personnes en qui elle avait confiance. Mais Mallory n’est pas personne à montrer ses sentiments, elle garde tout pour elle et élabore des petites vengeances car elle est aussi bien rancunière quand elle le veut.
Coco, cette jeune fille si différente des autres, fait chaud au cœur. Je ne connaissais pas du tout cette pathologie, je ne sais pas vraiment si elle existe non plus mais c’est vrai qu’on comprend ses sentiments tout de suite. Elle est si mignonne, elle est seulement en quête d’amour et cet amour elle le veut de Mallory, la personne qu’elle aime le plus au monde. On comprend les doutes de Charles quant aux intentions de notre héroïne, mais on comprend aussi la détermination de notre enquêtrice à résoudre cette affaire. Mallory est peut-être différente des autres jeunes femmes, c’est sûr, mais elle a essayé de prendre soin de Coco à sa propre manière.
L’histoire est vraiment triste et complexe, et c’est vrai que je ne m’attendais pas du tout à un tome pareil. Mais j’ai vraiment beaucoup aimé toute l’histoire. On se pose de nombreuses questions sur ces entêtes de chapitres écrit par un certain personnage dont on ne connait rien. Je me suis demandé au départ si ce n’était pas des citations mais non. On ne comprend que bien plus tard la vérité et il était très important de bien tout lire pour arriver à finalement comprendre le déroulement de l’histoire.
On réfléchit, on doute, on comprend les personnages petit à petit. Je n’ai pas beaucoup de séries policières que j’apprécie particulièrement mais celle-ci est une exception. Chaque tome est riche en émotions et j’espère vraiment qu’un tome 11 paraîtra car je suis sûre que Mallory, Riker, Charles et toute la bande nous réserve encore de jolies surprises.
