Life couldn’t be sweeter for Tres Amigas Café chef Rita Lafitte, decorating sugar skulls and taste-testing rich, buttery pan de muerto in anticipation of Santa Fe’s Day of the Dead bread-baking contest. That is, until her friendly landlord, Victor, is found dead next door.

Although the police deem Victor’s death a suicide, Rita knows something is amiss. To uncover the truth, she teams up with her octogenarian boss, Flori, the town’s most celebrated snoop. The duo begins to sift through long-buried secrets and to take full measure of duplicitous neighbors, but the clock is ticking and their list of suspects is growing ever longer. Just as the clues get hotter than a New Mexican chili, one of their main suspects winds up dead. Rita fears that the killer is dishing out seconds—and her order might be up.

Review: It’s been awhile since I had not read a cozy mystery novel, and it’s true that when I came across this novel, I was quickly intrigued. Murders, food and an investigation, what more could we ask for?

We meet with Rita, a young woman working in a restaurant and trying to get her life on trail after breaking up with her husband. Having left her home for a small apartment to accommodate her daughter, she thought she could finally live in peace. Yet all this will change once her owner dies next to her home. While the police (including her husband, the detective in charge) concludes on a suicide, the protests began to rain, including that of Rita and her boss, Flori. Forced to team up together, they will try to understand what happened and to discover the identity of the killer. But the tracks are quite numerous between the neighbors who threatened him the day before for him to leave for his land or his ex-wife who tells everyone that she is the heir and that everything belongs to her now.

I was quickly swept away by the story, I had a good time and it’s true that I was curious to learn the truth about what really happened. We follow with pleasure the assumptions of our heroine, agreeing on her ideas and being surprised by the revelations purposes. I confess that I did not expect at all at the end and I really enjoyed the way the author had directed her history.

I also expected to see a love triangle here with former husband and the new possible pretender, but this is not the case and I admit that it was nice to see Rita focusing on one person. It’s a pretty interesting character who does not hesitate to confront the most dangerous situations to help her friends. But despite that, she takes her role as mother to heart and it was nice to see her interaction with her daughter.

As you can see, there is a good novel, I took pleasure in discovering. To read.

La vie ne pouvait pas être plus douce pour le chef du Tres Amigas Café, Rita Lafitte, décorant des crânes en sucre et goûter le riche et beurré pan de de muerto en prévision de Day of the Dead à Santa Fe, concours du cuisson de pain. Autrement dit, jusqu’à ce que son propriétaire amical, Victor, soit retrouvé mort à côté.

Bien que la police estime que la mort de Victor est un suicide, Rita sait que quelque chose ne va pas. Pour découvrir la vérité, elle fait équipe avec sa patronne octogénaire, Flori, la fureteuse la plus célèbre de la ville. Le duo commence à passer au crible les secrets longtemps enterrés et à prendre la pleine mesure de la duplicité de leurs voisins, mais le temps est compté et leur liste de suspects se développe toujours plus. Et les indices deviennent plus chauds qu’un nouveau piment mexicain, l’un de leurs principaux suspects se retrouve mort. Rita craint d’être la prochaine.

 

Avis : Ca faisait longtemps que je n’avais pas lu de cozy mystery, et c’est vrai que quand je suis tombée sur ce roman, j’ai été assez vite intriguée. Des meurtres, de la cuisine et une enquête, que demander de plus ?

On fait connaissance de Rita, une jeune femme travaillant dans un restaurant et qui essaie de reprendre sa vie après s’être séparée de son mari. Ayant quitté sa maison pour prendre un petit logement et ainsi accueillir sa fille, elle pensait enfin vivre dans la tranquillité. Pourtant, tout cela va changer dès lors qu’elle retrouve son propriétaire mort à côté de chez elle. Alors que la police (et notamment son mari, le détective en charge) conclue sur un suicide, les protestations commencent à pleuvoir, dont celle de Rita et de sa patronne, Flori. Forcée de faire équipe ensemble, elles vont essayer de comprendre ce qui a bien pu se passer et de connaitre l’identité du tueur. Mais les pistes sont assez nombreuses entre un des voisins qui le jour précédent les menaçait pour qu’ils quittent leurs terres ou encore son ex-femme qui explique à tout le monde qu’elle est l’héritière et que tout lui appartient à présent.

J’ai été assez vite emportée par l’histoire, on passe un bon moment et c’est vrai que j’étais curieuse d’apprendre la vérité sur ce qu’il s’était réellement passé. On suit avec plaisir les hypothèses de notre héroïne, s’accordant sur ses idées et étant surpris par la finalités des révélations. J’avoue que je ne m’attendais d’ailleurs pas du tout à la fin et j’ai beaucoup apprécié la façon dont l’auteure avait dirigé son histoire.

Je m’attendais aussi à voir un triangle amoureux ici avec l’ex mari et le nouveau possible prétendant mais ce n’est pas le cas et j’avoue que c’était agréable de voir Rita se concentrer sur une seule personne. C’est un personnage assez intéressant qui n’hésite pas à se confronter aux situations les plus dangereuses pour aider ses amis. Mais malgré ça, elle prend son rôle de mère aussi à coeur et c’était agréable de voir ses échanges avec sa fille.

Vous l’aurez compris, on retrouve une roman agréable, que j’ai pris plaisir à découvrir. A lire.

THAT SINKING FEELING

Kidwella Castle in northern Wales is rumored to be haunted by a deadly ghost—the Grim Widow, who allegedly drowns unsuspecting guests in the castle’s moat. Not long after M. J. and her crew arrive at the castle to film their ghost-hunting cable TV show, Ghoul Getters, two new victims are added to the Widow’s grisly roster.

Fear ripples through the castle, especially when it’s discovered that the victims may have had help into their watery graves from the land of the living. The local inspector suspects father-son serial killers, but M. J. thinks that theory is all wet. To catch the true culprit she will need to dive deep into the castle’s past and bring some long buried secrets to the surface.

Review: Ah, M. J. and her team! I am always intrigued when a new volume comes out and I often read them fast enough. I may be a little less attached to this one than the previous ones but it is still a very good novel.

Our small team is heading to Castle Kidwella where a widow is known to wreak havoc. But from the beginning, something fishy is looming and this survey may be the only that they could abandon before the end because of the danger it represents. Indeed, almost killing Heath by being sucked into the castle moat, our heroes are facing more and more questions about their career choice. Moreover, their boss Chris seems determined to get the story of the century under penalty of firing them all. And while the urge to drop everything becomes stronger, this is also accompanied by a number of deaths by drowning in the moat, Gopher offers them to make a real movie with more money than they hoped for at the key. Hard to say … especially when they realize that abandoning their posts would mean letting behind them all the poor ghosts killed by the widow, prisoners of that crazy woman. Our small team will face a new challenge that may well be more dangerous than expected, but which would deliver many souls.

The history of the castle was really interesting to follow. So many things happened and we gradually discover the truth about the former owners. I was quite curious to see how the clash of the widow would be realized, as it must be said that she isn’t an easy target. The relationship between Heath and M.J. is also changing as they realize that they have actually quite different plans for their future, especially the city they both want to stay in. However, they are very much in love with each other and they are a very nice couple together. New characters appear here, including Michael, the new Gil’s boyfriend. Well I must say that he is also much more courageous and it was nice to see him get used and be interested in our little group. I’m sure that we will have the opportunity to see him in the next novels.

The end of the novel allows us to discover the first chapter of Volume 8 and all that announces the return of Steven! I’m so impatient about all that and I feel that it’s going to be epic to attend the meeting between Steven/M.J./Heath.

Ce sentiment d’amortissement

Le château de Kidwella dans le nord du Pays de Galles est connu pour être hanté par le fantôme de la veuve Grim, qui aurait l’habitude de noyer les visiteurs peu méfiants dans les douves du château. Peu de temps après que M.J. et son équipe soient arrivés au château pour filmer leur fantôme pour l’émission de télévision Getters Ghoul, deux nouvelles victimes sont ajoutées au tableau macabre de la Veuve.

La peur se répercute dans le château, surtout quand ils découvrent que les victimes ont reçu l’aide de la terre des vivants. L’inspecteur local soupçonne un tueur en série de père en fils, mais M.J. pense que la théorie ne vaut pas grand-chose. Pour attraper le vrai coupable, elle aura besoin de plonger dans le passé du château et de déterrer des secrets depuis longtemps enfouis.

Avis : Ah M.J. et toute son équipe ! Je suis toujours intriguée dès qu’un nouveau tome sort et je saute très souvent dessus assez vite. J’ai peut-être un peu moins accroché à celui-ci que le précédent mais il est tout de même très bon.

Notre petite équipe se dirige au château de Kidwella, où une veuve est connue pour y faire des ravages. Mais dès le début, quelque chose de louche se profile et cette enquête pourrait bien être la seule abandonnée avant la fin vu le danger qu’elle représente. En effet, après avoir failli mourir avec Heath en se faisant aspirer dans les douves du château, nos héros se posent de plus en plus de questions sur leur choix de carrière. De plus, leur patron Chris semble décidé à obtenir le reportage du siècle sous peine de les virer tous. Et alors que l’envie de tout laisser tomber devient de plus en plus forte, cela accompagné par plusieurs morts par noyade dans les douves, Gopher leur propose de réaliser un véritable film avec plus d’argent qu’ils n’espéraient à la clé. Difficile de refuser… surtout quand ils se rendent compte qu’abandonner leur poste reviendrait à dire laisser tous les pauvres fantômes tués par la veuve, prisonniers de cette femme complètement folle. Notre petite équipe va devoir faire face à un tout nouveau challenge qui pourrait bien être plus dangereux que prévu mais qui délivrerait un grand nombre d’âmes.

L’histoire du château était vraiment intéressante à suivre. Il s’est passé tellement de choses-là et on découvre petit à petit la vérité au sujet des anciens propriétaires. J’étais assez curieuse de voir comment allait se dérouler l’affrontement de la veuve, car il faut dire qu’elle ne se laisse vraiment pas faire. La relation entre Heath et M.J. évolue aussi mais ils se rendent compte qu’ils ont des projets finalement assez différents pour leur futur, notamment la ville où ils veulent tous deux demeurer. Ils sont cependant très amoureux l’un de l’autre et ils forment un très joli couple. De nouveaux personnages apparaissent ici, notamment Michel, le nouveau petit ami de Gil. Bon il faut dire qu’il est aussi beaucoup plus courageux et c’était sympa de le voir s’accoutumer et s’intéresser à notre petit groupe. Je suis sûre que nous aurons ainsi l’occasion de le voir dans les prochains romans.

La fin du roman nous permet de découvrir le premier chapitre du tome 8 et tout cela nous annonce le retour de Steven ! Comme j’ai hâte de pouvoir le découvrir, je sens que ça va être épique d’assister aux joutes de notre trio Steven/M.J./Heath.

Synopsis: There’s a ghost on the loose—and a fox in the henhouse

Four years ago, the Eternal Slumber Funeral Home put Chicken Teater in the ground. Now undertaker Emma Lee Raines is digging him back up. The whole scene is bad for business, especially with her granny running for mayor and a big festival setting up in town. But ever since Emma Lee started seeing ghosts, Chicken’s been pestering her to figure out who killed him.

With her handsome boyfriend, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross, busy getting new forensics on the old corpse, Emma Lee has time to look into her first suspect. Chicken’s widow may be a former Miss Kentucky, but the love of his life was another beauty queen: Lady Cluckington, his prize-winning hen. Was Mrs. Teater the jealous type? Chicken seems to think so. Something’s definitely rotten in Sleepy Hollow—and Emma Lee just prays it’s not her luck.

Review: After a good time with the first book, I was curious to see what the author would introduce with her second volume. But I must say that once again we have a story full of humor, incredible characters and of course a new survey all accompanied by another ghost.

As I said, Emma finds herself haunted by a new ghost but unlike Ruthie, Chicken was buried 4 years ago. But thanks to her relations with the police, Jack exhumes the body to determine whether the man actually killed or not. While her boyfriend makes every effort to prevent her to investigate this new case, Emma remains determined to find the culprit. Who else but his wife could be the ideal culprit? Especially when we know that she was jealous of the award winning Chicken’s hen. Oh yes, and we can understand it because he literally idolized the animal and brought her to the forefront whatever happens. An unpleasant situation for his young wife I must say. I admit that I loved the conversations of the ghost about his favorite chicken! It’s pretty impressive to see what he was willing to do for her. You can imagine that it’s not common to see something like that! Besides, he had a Cadillac used only to transport his favorite animal. Yeah! Really!

It’s not all because Emma’s grandmother, this really wacky woman decides that it is time to concur as mayor of the city. We will also see the evolution of the relationship between Jack and the young woman, which is not so easy regarding the situations where we find Emma each time. I must say that to discover the culprit, the young woman does not hesitate to act, and even to completely change her appearance. Yep, we can see her blonde, seeing her attend a Miss contest and even singing! It makes you curious is not it? Especially when we know that she is far from that all. As for the murderer elsewhere, I quickly realized about his identity, perhaps because he stood out from the other characters but it’s true that I was curious to discover the reason behind this gesture.

In any case I had a great time with this new story and I’m curious to read more again for a new adventure for our funeral employee.

Il y a quatre ans, l’Eternel Slumber Funeral Home a mis Chicken Teater en terre. Maintenant Emma Lee Raines le déterre à la surface. La scène entière est mauvaise pour les affaires, en particulier avec sa grand-mère concourant pour être maire et la création d’un grand festival en ville. Mais depuis qu’Emma Lee a commencé à voir des fantômes, Chicken la harcèle pour savoir qui l’a tué.

Avec son charmant petit ami, le shérif Jack Henry Ross, occupé à s’occuper du vieux cadavre, Emma Lee a le temps de se pencher sur son premier suspect. La veuve de Chicken est peut-être une ancienne Miss Kentucky, mais l’amour de sa vie était une autre reine de beauté : Lady Cluckington, sa poule primée. Mme Teater était-elle du type jalouse ? Chicken semble le penser. Quelque chose est vraiment pourri à Sleepy Hollow et Emma Lee prie pour que ce ne soit pas sa chance.

Avis : Après avoir passé un bon moment avec le premier tome, j’étais curieuse de voir ce que l’auteure allait nous présenter dans son second volume. Mais je dois dire qu’une fois encore, nous avons une histoire pleine d’humour, de personnages rocambolesques et bien sûr une nouvelle enquête le tout accompagné d’un autre fantôme.

Comme je le disais, Emma se retrouve hantée par un nouveau fantôme mais à l’inverse de Ruthie, Chicken est enterré depuis 4 ans. Mais grâce à ses relations avec la police, Jack exhume le corps pour déterminer si l’homme a réellement été tué ou pas. Bien que son petit-ami fasse son possible pour l’empêcher d’enquêter sur cette nouvelle affaire, Emma reste déterminée à trouver le coupable. Qui d’autre que sa femme serait le coupable idéal ? Surtout quand on sait qu’elle était jalouse de la poule  primée de Chicken. Oh oui et on peut la comprendre car il idolâtrait littéralement l’animal et la mettait au premier plan quoi qu’il se passe. Une situation peu agréable pour sa jeune femme il faut le dire. J’avoue que j’ai adoré les conversations du fantôme sur sa poule préférée ! C’est assez impressionnant de voir ce qu’il était prêt à faire et comment il agissait pour elle. Vous vous doutez que ce n’est pas chose commune à voir ! D’ailleurs il avait une Cadillac seulement utilisée pour transporter son animal préféré.

Ce n’est pas tout car la grand-mère d’Emma, cette femme vraiment loufoque a décidé qu’il était temps qu’elle se présente en tant que maire de la ville. Nous verrons aussi l’évolution de la relation entre Jack et la jeune femme, ce qui n’est pas non plus si facile vu les situations dans lesquelles Emma se retrouve à chaque fois. Il faut dire que pour découvrir le coupable, la jeune femme n’hésite pas à agir, même à changer complètement d’apparence. Ouep, nous pourrons la voir blonde, la voir assister à un concours de miss et même chanter ? Ça rend curieux n’est-ce pas ? Surtout quand on sait qu’elle est loin de tout ça. Pour ce qui est du meurtrier d’ailleurs, j’ai assez vite compris son identité, peut-être parce qu’il sortait du lot mais c’est vrai que j’étais curieuse de découvrir la raison derrière ce geste.

Dans tous les cas j’ai passé un très bon moment avec cette nouvelle histoire et je suis curieuse de lire la suite encore une fois pour avoir une nouvelle aventure de notre employée de pompes funèbres.

Take Ruthie Sue Payne–innkeeper, gossip queen, and arch-nemesis of Emma Lee’s granny—she’s adamant that she didn’t just fall down those stairs. She was pushed.

Ruthie has no idea who wanted her pushing up daisies. All she knows is that she can’t cross over until the matter is laid to eternal rest. In the land of the living, Emma Lee’s high-school crush, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross, isn’t ready to rule out foul play. Granny Raines, the widow of Ruthie’s ex-husband and co-owner of the Sleepy Hollow Inn, is the prime suspect. Now Emma Lee is stuck playing detective or risk being haunted forever.

Review: I was immediately attracted by the cover and I admit that I took the book before reading the synopsis. But how not to be drawn to it? A heroine working for a funeral company, humor and ghosts that are determined to haunt her until she helps them? Yes? Are you intrigued? I knew it! So as you can imagine, I spent a good time with this first volume and I’m curious to read more now.

Emma had an accident some time ago and has since hallucinations or at least that’s what she believes. Yes until a new death occurs and Ruthie, the old lady that she is preparing for the funeral, materializes before her. Now, Emma realizes that she is not crazy in fact but that does not change how people look at her. So of course everyone is watching her and everyone is asking many questions about her sanity when she talks to herself. So yes excuses rife as to why she seems taken into animated conversations all by herself. But specifically back to the story, Ruthie has just died, but she knows she was murdered and she wants Emma to find her murderer. Alas, our heroine is far from being an investigator, but she remains determined to help the old lady, especially when the only suspect of the story is Granny, Emma’s grandma. Taking things in hand, the young woman will ally with the sheriff of the city to discover the real culprit! Jack is the only person who believes in her gift and this story could link them together.

I enjoyed exploring this story, it is fresh and full of ideas. I always appreciate a ghost novel, and it was very nice to read this one. Although this is not really complicated, it was interesting to follow the Emma’s adventures and to try to understand with her who was the person responsible for the Ruthie’s death. It’s pretty funny to see the relationship between our two heroines changing along the course of the story while they were not really close at the start. Through her investigation, Emma will find out more about her grandmother, things she did not expect elsewhere. I admit that the murderer was also a surprise for me because I didn’t get a name for the culprit and I agreed with Emma’s assumptions. But that’s not all because it was also quite touching to see her with Jack without understanding what he really wanted. But their relationship slowly evolves with the chapters and I’m curious to see what will happen for the future.

So it was a good introduction to this series and I’m now curious to read the second volume.
