Born Wicked (The Cahill Witch Chronicles, 1) – Jessica Spotswood

Everybody knows Cate Cahill and her sisters are eccentric. Too pretty, too reclusive, and far too educated for their own good. But the truth is even worse: they’re witches. And if their secret is discovered by the priests of the Brotherhood, it would mean an asylum, a prison ship–or an early grave.

Before her mother died, Cate promised to protect her sisters. But with six months to choose between marriage and the Sisterhood, she might not be able to keep her word… especially after she finds her mother’s diary, uncovering a secret that could spell her family’s destruction. Desperate to find alternatives to their fate, Cate stars scouring banned books and questioning rebellious new friends, all while juggling tea parties, shocking marriage proposals, and a forbidden romance with the completely unsuitable Finn Belastra.

If what her mother wrote is true, the Cahill girls aren’t safe. Not from the Brotherhood, the Sisterhood — not even from each other.

Bonds of Fenris – S.J. Bell

Talia Thornwood’s life ended one year ago, when she became a werewolf. She survived the attack, and the horrifying transformation a month later, but the life she has now is barely worth living. She lurks about in a filthy, run-down house, with too many werewolves crammed into too small a space. Every day is a struggle against the stress of human contact, the romantic prodding of her obnoxious packmate Pierce, and the gnawing hunger for flesh in her soul.

She’s all but resigned herself to a dreary existence on the margins of society when she meets Corwin. Corwin is a werewolf like none other. He walks among humans as if it was nothing, and can keep his wolf under control even when the moon is full. Talia’s mind is suddenly opened to the possibilities before her, and the realization of how little she really knows about lycanthropy.

Corwin claims that he can teach her how to cope as he does, even how to transcend her affliction. But it will not be easy. It is a hard education that requires her to question everything her pack taught her, and confront exactly what she has become. And, more amazingly, what she never stopped being.

Bloodlines, Book 2

Synopsis : Keira has been through Hell, literally….. But now she’s back, and stronger than ever!

In this second gripping instalment of the Bloodlines trilogy Keira and her friends – Lily, Lucian, Tyler, Jake and Danny – continue to try and understand their elemental powers, and protect themselves from their enemies, whose ultimate goal is to destroy them.

This time, the stakes are higher – what seems to be a demon rebellion has broken out in hell and the Earth is plunged into chaos. Their problem is, no one – not even Lucifer himself – knows who the rebel leader is. It seems only Keira, her frightened but determined friends, and a new ally – a demon named Eligos – can find out who this person or thing is, why they are suddenly causing so much bloodshed, pain and upset for everyone, and destroy them.

Bloody awesome battles, amazing feats of magic, and a stronger-than-death passion, make for an intoxicating, unforgettable read in this powerfully imagined fantasy…

Melliane’s review : I think when we start this book we only wonder about one thing : What happened to Kiera when she was in Hell? And why didn’t she come back to see her friends when they were so sad about her death?

But Kiera doesn’t want to tell all the story at once, which was certainly a great thing, because we learn a lot of revelations. I think it was my favorite part of the story, and I was also very interested by her trip. Finally learning all the answers to my questions about her change, about Lilith or Lucifer was really nice. I think we can only like these two characters, Lilith is like her daughter. Determined, full of kindness and love, but also categorical when it’s about her own choices. We understand very well why Kiera stayed away from her friends, and in the same time I think it was great for her to be with her family she didn’t know anything about.

It’s quite frustrating in the beginning to see the actions between Eligos and our heroine. Indeed, we know they’re meant to be together and we don’t understand why our little demon keeps pushing her away all the time. I confess we’re very surprised when we know the reason. Yes, I made a lot of hypothesizes but of course I was wrong. Indeed, when we learn the truth we can only be dazed by the choice of Eligos to hide from Kiera. But we’re so happy for them when he understands that it won’t change anything. Seeing them together was very touching and we can only wish for them a bright future. We hope to finally learn the limits about the power of Kiera and what will happen now with all the events she goes through.

I didn’t think Tyler would change like this. When I think I really liked this character in the beginning… I can understand he was jealous about Eligos, but so much? He doesn’t want to assimilate what Kiera tells him, and so he provokes some events I didn’t think he could make. I confess it was something which was very disturbing, I didn’t expect that.

After that, I think the relationship between the characters is quite predictable, but in the same time we’re very happy for all of them. I think it’s the only thing which restraints me, all the feelings and the unspoken.
I’m very curious about the initiator of all of this. All the evidences we learn about, don’t allow us to really know everything, not even the reason. I can’t wait to read the sequel to finally learn the truth and to see how will be this epic fight.

Inessa’s review : The story picks up exactly where we’re left in the Volume 1, i.e. just after the clash with Argyle. So we find Keira, back home after three weeks of absence. Her friends ask themselves lots of questions about her, they want to know what happened to her. She finally tells them that she was in Hell. But as soon as returned, Keira must again face the danger because nothing is finished on the contrary, it’s just the beginning. A war is coming and the worst is that nobody seems to know who’s behind it all.
I enjoyed the first chapters with a flashback. Not only they allow us to know what Keira did during those three weeks she was in Hell but also thanks to them we can better understand the evolution of her relationship with Eligos. Indeed, both have became very close. Then we learn all sorts of information. We discover for example that Keira stayed in Lilith and Lucifer’s palace, that time doesn’t flow the same way there, and so on. We also learn many things about the organization of life in Hell. In fact, Hell is one among the many realms parallel to ours, like Heaven. In this book we are far from the image we usually have of Hell, the author makes an almost idyllic description (I said almost). It’s fairly interesting.
Regarding the characters, I still like the heroine Keira, who is still strong and has a bad temper. Her relationship with Eligos is very beautiful though often punctuated by ups and downs. She can always rely on her best friend Lily, who still supports her against all odds. Tyler, however is more and more annoying! What he does is unforgivable. The other boys, however are more removed, except Danny who is very present in this volume. Who would have thought that his relationship with Keira will evolve that way?
Overall I found this volume is better than the previous one. There are a lot more action, the twists and turns of the plot are numerous (I was surprised more than once!) I also love the change of point of views, even more numerous than in book one.
The novel ends with a final twist that leaves the reader completely speechless! I hope the sequel will be available soon because I confess I’m a little frustrated!

Bloodlines, Tome 2

Résumé (traduction personnelle) : Kiera a traversé l’enfer, littéralement…

*here is the english version*

Lindsay Anne Kendal : Interview and Giveaway

*La version française est par ici*

Hello everyone, we’re happy to present you an amazing writer : Lindsay Anne Kendal. She is the author of the Bloodlines series. She aggreed to answer a few questions for us.

Could you tell us a little something about the third book
?

I have to be careful here so as not to spoil anything. What I will say is the Revelations is where all Hell breaks lose. There are some extreme battles, revenge and treachery. You learn who is behind the attacks and their reasoning behind it. The question is, will you agree with the reason and want him to continue, or will you be against them?

Has it been difficult to write the first book? Or the second?

I didn’t have any problems writing the first book, or not that I can remember anyway. I had a block for a couple of weeks on Torment, but then everything just seemed to fall into place. I must admit, Revelations is taking me a while. Although I know what I want to write, I just can’t seem to find the words.

Does the inspiration for the characters come from people you know?

A few of them yes. Keira definitely had my attitude and outlook on things, and Lily is very similar to my sister. Eligos is my dream man, oh I wish I could meet him in real life, and the others are the friends I wish I’d had around me all my life.

Have you done a lot of researches about witches of salem?

I read up on a lot of the history yes. It’s very interesting to see what happened. I didn’t want to basically write a version of the trials though, so I didn’t let it suck me in too much. I just wanted the place as the setting and to touch on it a little.

Do you need very specific conditions to write? With music? In a coffee shop? Where does the magic happen?

I either write in the car whilst I’m out and about, or shut away in my bedroom. I hate writing in the day, I love to sit in the dark with my laptop. Music is my inspiration so when the stereo isn’t on, I have my headphones on and my Ipod playing. A cup of tea and some Pepsi Max also helps 🙂

Do you have a favorite author? Or book?

I love Bram Stoker’s Dracula. That has to be my favourite book ever. I also like Carolyn Crane and her Mind Games series. I cannot wait for the third book to be released.

Do you have any ideas for another series?

I have the first in a two part series being released in the new year. Leticia. This one is very different to Bloodlines, and is set in England.
I also have a secret project I’m working on, but it’s so secret I can’t tell anyone. Sorry!

Bloodlines by Lindsay Anne Kendal (VO)

Bloodlines, Book 1

Synopsis : Keira Jameson used to lead a normal life, she just had a gift, passed down through the generations of her family. Now, after hearing voices, having strange dreams of others calling out to her, and her grandfather’s last words haunting her, she sets out to find other families like hers.

Along with her best friend Lily, the only person outside her family to know about her gift, Keira begins a hunt for her ancestors. A chance meeting with a young man, Lucian Turner, sets them on the right track, but their discoveries change the way Keira will see herself for ever more. Fear, superstition and heritage are shaping Keira’s future and she must face her enemies, even if this could mean losing her life.

She cannot escape her destiny.

Melliane’s review : Firstable I would like to thank Lindsay Anne Kendal who gives me the opportunity to read her first novel. I didn’t know this one at all , so I didn’t have any specific expectations before starting it. I can tell now this first volume was a great surprise.

We meet our heroine : Kiera and her inseparable best friend : Lily, who have gone to Salem to discover the truth about the Kiera’s ancestors. But they both didn’t expect to be welcomed by a band of four persons who just want to make her leave the city as soon as possible. We quickly like the two characters, these two young girls are very different but finally they are perfectly complements, which allows them to evolve together all along the story like two sisters.

From the beginning, we’re very intrigued by Kiera, we would love as much as her to know where she came from, what really happens, the limit of her powers…. Following all these rumors and legends about the witches of Salem was really interesting, I confess that I’ve been captivated by every story and I really liked each. The main story keeps us very curious all along this first novel. We learn some big revelations we didn’t expect about and whose we can only be surprised. A lot of discoveries allow us to understand little by little the elements to really know more at the end of the volume.

In a lot of books, we find a love triangle, but in this one it was different too. There aren’t two boys, no, but three ! All right I know the third is more subtle than the others. We could think it will be too much, that it makes the story more abstract, but it wasn’t the case. The author succeed to make each relation in a way we can believe it, we understand what Kiera sees in them all.

This book initiates a story more complex, some big changes happen for every characters and we’re very curious for the sequel. A great story about witches and demons which leads us in an inevitable fight.

Inessa’s review : First of all I would like to thank the author Lindsay Anne Kendal for allowing us to discover her novel.

Keira Jameson isn’t a girl like any other. Following the death of her grandfather, she decides to go to Salem with her best friend Lily to find other families like hers and learn more about herself. Once arrived, they quickly meet Lucian and his friend Jake. But the reception in Salem is far from being warm because the two young women are attacked by a group of four men wearing long robes with hoods.

I found this novel very lovely. Overall I liked the characters. I have hooked up with Keira, the heroine who seems very self confident and sure of her powers. Throughout the story we ask lots of questions about her: How is she so special? What did her grandfather want to say to her before he dies? Why does her eyes turn white when she uses her powers as those of the others become black? Etc. The answers are given little by little as we progress in the reading. Then Keira can count on the support of her best friend Lily who will always be on her side. Their friendship is so strong: they are very close like sisters.

The boys are all very endearing, although Tyler and Lucian annoyed me sometimes. I found their attitude a little excessive. After all, those two guys have always known each other before Keira, they just meet her so why being so jealous and possessive? It must also be said that Keira doesn’t do anything to calm the situation and this creates tensions in the group. But the arrival of another character, Eligos, could get everyone to agree. At least I hope so! Ah … Eligos is undoubtedly the most fascinating character, though we don’t know much about him except his nature. I hope we’ll learn more about him in the next books!

Regarding the story itself, I found the first half of the novel was a bit slow. Indeed Keira wants to know who or rather what she is, where she comes from and all sorts of information about her own bloodline and the bloodline of the four boys as well. It doesn’t happen much things. But I enjoyed the story of the five families during the witch hunts, trials of Salem etc. It was really interesting.

The second half of the novel, however, is much more rhythmic, especially with the emergence of Eligos (yes, him again!) There’s more action, the story becomes more and more exciting and I started to really enjoy the book from there. A multitude of enemies arrive and a war seems to be emerging. Keira and her friends will have to fight for their survival. The story takes an unexpected turn in Chapter 24. I enjoyed the passages from Lucian’s point of view. I even think they are my favorites!

To conclude this book is a pleasant surprise, the style is very fluid, it’s very entertaining. I can’t wait to read the sequel.
