Kiss the Night Goodbye by Keri Arthur

Nikki & Michael, Book 4

Synopsis: THE PRICE OF LOVE

Nikki James is just an ordinary, risk-taking, psychically inclined private eye until she hooks up with Michael Kelly. Now she is something more: one of the few, the chosen, the magic-wielding undercover operatives of the Damask Circle, an organization protecting humanity from a rising tide of evil. She wants nothing more than to pass the Circle’s strict entry exams so she can get on with the business of planning her wedding to Michael. But she quickly realizes that buying a wedding dress is the least of her worries.

One hundred years ago, Michael Kelly hunted down and killed the sorcerer responsible for murdering his lover. Now the brother of that man is out for revenge, and he intends to destroy all that Michael holds dear in the process. When Michael is kidnapped, the trail leads Nikki to a dusty ghost town surrounded by a potent magical barrier, leaving her to battle a madman alone with only her wits, strength, and the one psychic gift she cannot fully control. And to make matters even worse, Michael no longer seems to remember who she is

Review: And here is the final book in the Nikki and Michael series. Finally, I do not really know if this is THE last volume but for the moment it is in any case the only remaining. I loved the whole series and I was curious to see what would happen now. A whole new life now begins for Nikki and Jake and I was curious to learn more about the Circle after all we had heard about.

So as I said Nikki is finally part of the circle, but firstly she has to pass some tests, something that stresses at the highest point. Yet thanks to her determination, she succeeds like no others. This could be a good thing, and Nikki might have had the chance to organize her wedding now if not a detail she had not taken into account, the desire for revenge of a man. In fact, the brother of a wizard that Michael killed many years previously decides that his time had come. And for that, he kidnaps our beloved vampire during a mission and enclosed him in a town to reproduce past events to resurrect his brother. But to make it a success, Michael must be in the same condition as he was a century ago, when he met for the first time Seline, and he did not know Nikki. Of course, to save him, Nikki is ready for anything and goes there under the shape that Seline had and tries to re-seduce her lover to make him understand the truth. All this will only be more complicated than expected …

Nikki begins to gradually accept her nature and sees the extent of her powers gradually. Whatever happens, she is still as determined to save him and be a part of his life. It’s really cute to see them together like this, yet it is also quite sad to see that he does not recognize her. In this city, however, Michael feels that “Seline” is hiding something, and he discovers that there is more throughout the story. Moreover, we see a whole new side of Michael, harder, but also more open in a way. Much more happens and he opens himself to Nikki and reveals a part of his past, when he had never done so. I loved to learn more about him and this allows us to understand why he has trouble with his condition and why he is afraid for the life of the young woman.

It was a great book and I hope that one day Keri Arthur will return back to this series and continue it even if the book does not end on a cliffy, I ‘m sure a lot of things could still happen . Of course, if everything stops here, we also have a very good final and I enjoyed reading the four volumes present. I recommend the series but it’s far from all the other series that I discovered from this author.

Kiss the Night Goodbye de Keri Arthur (VO)

Nikki & Michael, Tome 4

Chasing the Shadows by Keri Arthur

Nikki & Michael, Book 3

Synopsis: Nikki James is in San Francisco at the request of her partner and best friend, Jake. The wife of an old friend is missing, and Jake intends to find her—whatever the cost. The authorities believe the kidnappings to be the work of a sick mind, but Nikki knows that the truth is something much worse—especially since she seems to have an unexpected psychic link to the killer. But as always, she is more than willing to risk her own life to save another’s.

For Michael Kelly, Nikki’s bravado is a source of endless terror. He wants nothing more than to make Nikki a permanent part of his life, but he knows that her quest is sure to get her killed. As they chase through the sewers and tunnels of San Francisco and the body count begins to rise, Michael badgers her to stay off the case, but Nikki has no intention of complying. She wants him to realize that she’s either a full partner in his life or she’s out. But nothing prepares her for the price she has to pay for her stubbornness—the life of someone she loves.

Review: I was curious to read the third book. I must say that Nikki and Michael are finally together for our pleasure, something we have been waiting for since the first volume. But nothing is simple, and many things are waiting for our little couple.

Finally, as I said our heroes live together, but Nikki is still apart from his life for the Circle. And you can imagine that she really doesn’t like it, it’s not even something she readily accepts. But whatever happens, he remains determined to keep her away from it. But could this stubbornness break their relationship for good? By a quirk of circumstance, a Nikki and Jake’s case meets with one of Michael’s and despite his refusal, he is forced to work with her on this new mission. In fact, a Jake’s friend has been taken and she is not the first one. However, the mutilated bodies reappear and our heroes need to understand what is going on to save all these young women. But the danger is becoming more present, especially when the madman behind the murders decides that Nikki might be too dangerous for him and that she must at all costs be eliminated.

I admit that I was very curious to find out who the culprit was. I did not expect that the story would be solved like that and I was surprised more than once. The survey is well done and I found it very interesting to follow the tracks throughout the story. I was however heart broken about the relationship between Nikki and Michael. they’re both understandably, she wants to be part of his life, be his equal partner and he wants to do everything to protect her and keep her safe. But of course they want to go against the wishes of the other and sparks erupt more than once between them. I hoped they could reach a compromise and yet the two are the most stubborn people I know. In addition to this, we can see that the link between them is strengthened, while adding exceptional powers to each and I’m curious about their limits. Nikki has changed a lot since the first book and I hope she will accept the person she is becoming. Yet we also see that our two heroes love each other a lot and it was a pleasure to see them so happy when they do not fight.

Regarding the end of the book, as stated in the synopsis, a person close to her will die and I did not really expect that. I was very sad when I realized that we’ll never meet again this character again. At the same time, this death will make them understand many things. I’m curious to see what happens afterwards.

So it was again a good book and I look forward to read the fourth volume. Big changes are announced and I’m really curious to learn more about the Circle!

Chasing the Shadows de Keri Arthur (VO)

Nikki & Michael, Tome 3

Hearts in Darkness by Keri Arthur

Nikki & Michael, book 2

Synopsis: Life has never been so insane for Nikki James. There’s another teenager missing. She has another vampire to contend with. Her partner and best friend Jake is in the hospital dying. And a madman is kidnapping the wealthy. Just when it seems nothing else could possibly go wrong, Michael returns-but not for her. This time, however, Nikki has no intention of running from either the case or from what still lies between her and Michael. And she isn’t going to let him run, either. The last thing Michael Kelly needs is a confrontation with Nikki-especially when his control over his bloodlust is still so tenuous. But when a kidnapper steps up his agenda to murder, he’s forced into a partnership with Nikki to keep her safe. Soon Michael discovers the biggest danger he faces may not be from his need to “taste” her, but from his desire to make her a permanent part of his life-a life that is sure to get her killed. Nikki is determined to make Michael see that life apart is worse than death. But before she can make him see the light, a specter from Michael’s past rises that could destroy any hope she has of a future with him. Because this time the threat isn’t physical. It’s a matter of the heart. Nikki must compete with the woman-the vampire-for whom Michael gave up life.

Review: I admit that I was curious after the first book to explore the adventures of the second Nikki and Michael’s volume. The first novel was fun to read but it is true that it lacked a little detail for me to be completely carried away but I think I got it here.

Nikki took over the course of her life, although the absence of Michael is a little difficult. She regrets not having told him what was on her heart and she is angry with him for running away. But even if it’s his fault, it is equally difficult for Michael, and despite the love he feels for her, he refuses to force her to take part in his life as it’s very dangerous. Yet despite his absence, Nikki will still manage to investigate a story a little too much for her and at the same time it seems it’s linked to Michael’s job. And despite his desire to stay as far away as possible from her, he is forced to return to work with her to protect her. And even if their investigations seem different at first, I was surprised to see how they were linked together. In fact, Nikki is looking for a young man who disappeared after a strange encounter on the net, kidnapped by vampires and for a girl who has not been seen for five months. Regarding Michael, he tries to find the responsible for the disappearance of several wealthy men in a big complex. And for that, he will have to team up with Nikki, pretending to be a couple on honeymoon, something that is much more difficult than he thought for his control.

I admit that I was quite intrigued to see how the stories were going to join and it’s really a great find from Keri Arthur. The plot is very interesting and we have a big villain. I confess that there are several things that I did not see coming but what is certain is that I was eager to see the evolution of the relationship between Nikki and Michael. I must say that it’s hard for Michael to admit that he needs her in his life. But it also goes both ways, but it must be said that when the woman is determined to have something, nothing stops her. The powers of our heroine are constantly changing and I was curious to see how it would all go. Indeed, she is able to do things that did not exist before. I loved the end of the novel, which ends quite well without cliffy and I’m curious to see what the author has for us in the future novels. It’s really a pleasure to read it and it is fun to discover each novel.

Hearts in Darkness de Keri Arthur (VO)

Nikki & Michael, Tome 2

Dancing with the Devil by Keri Arthur

Nikki & Michael, Book 1

Synopsis: Private Investigator Nikki James grew up on the tough streets of Lyndhurst and believes there’s nothing left to surprise her. All that changes the night she follows teenager Monica Trevgard into the shadows-and becomes a pawn caught in a war between two very different men. One fills her mind with his madness, the other pushes his way into her life-and her heart. Nikki knows how dangerous love can be, but if she wants to survive, she must place her trust in a man who could easily destroy her.

Michael Kelly has come to Lyndhurst determined to end the war between himself and another brother of the night. For 300 years he has existed in life’s shadows, gradually learning to control the life from death cravings of a vampire. Nikki not only breaches his formidable barriers with her psychic abilities, but makes Michael believe he may finally have found a woman strong enough to walk by his side and ease the loneliness in his heart. But will his love be enough to protect her from a madman hell-bent on revenge? Or will it drive her into his enemy’s deadly trap?

Only together can they overcome the evil threatening to destroy them both. But the secrets they keep from each other might prove to be the greatest threat of all.

Review: I was really curious about this Keri Arthur’s series. I’ve read many of her books and I was curious to see how she would carry out her ideas in this novel. So when I discovered the new edition of the series, I thought it was a very good opportunity. Especially since the new cover is really attractive!

I must say I was completely surprised, the novel is very different from what I had the opportunity to read by Keri Arthur. It is much softer and at the same time the plot is really well built. If I did not know who the author was at the beginning, I would never have found it.

Nikki is a sensitive heroine, but has more courage than anyone. So when she decides to investigate the disappearance of some young women, she does not expect to have to face an enemy like this, and from the hunter she quickly becomes the prey . She will enter a world that will change her life, a world where vampires, zombies and other creatures live. Yet she has also some gifts, and we discover that throughout the novel. She did not expect either to meet Michael, the man who makes her succumb and yet seems so far away from her. But he will do his best, protecting her as much as he can and being near her when she needs it.

I enjoyed getting to know each character. Nikki is a young woman with a long history and I looked forward to understand what had made her the person we discover. And it’s true that her life was more than difficult and we are in awe of the person she has become even though it is still hard for her. Michael is very secret and do not reveal much about her nature, but in the novel we learn a few things and I look forward to more. The two together make a beautiful couple, and they complement each other perfectly, even if they are struggling to accept what happens. I must say that I also loved the big villain of the story. He is perfect, sadistic, crazy, twisted, everything we would expect from a character like this.

A very nice early series and I’m curious to see what the result will be now.
