Wolfsbane by Patricia Briggs (VO)

Aralorn, Book 2 / Sianim, Book 4

Synopsis: Shapeshifting mercenary Aralorn leads a dangerous existence. Now she must return home for her noble father, the Lyon of Lambshold, has passed away. But when Aralorn and her companion Wolf arrive, they find he’s not dead, but ensorcelled by the ae’Magi, using him as a conduit to destroy Aralorn and Wolf. She must overcome this mysterious mist or fall to the blackest of magic.

Review: I was really surprised by this book (Yes I’m lucky for now). The first book was really nice but I confess that some parts were a little too long for my taste, and therefore it was a little difficult for me. So I was expecting the same feelings for this novel, but it wasn’t the case. Indeed, I get into the story from the start until the end. This time, not long parts, no, it is the total opposite. The story isn’t boring at all, and I read the book quite quickly.
We can feel that the author’s writing style is more accomplished, and the text is more complex than the first book. Patricia Briggs explains to us before the story that she used a lot of points in this roman for her other books, and that we can find them easily. But I confess I get so much into the story that I didn’t see any similarities with other novels. But now after a few days, they may be some details that come to my mind, but I’m not sure.
We can find our Aralorn and Wolf in the castle of Lion, trying to elude the new problems. It was a pleasure to follow their new adventures. When I think at the end of the first volume, I hoped to learn more about the Aralorn’s family and about Lyon, my wish was granted. Not only we meet her whole family but we can also learn some information about her childhood and the reason of her departure. It was cute to see Wolf and our heroine closer. We were waiting that for so long, despite it’s always a little difficult for them. They are now both more mature and they know what they want for their lives.
What about the story? It was a pleasure to follow the mystery of the Lion’s death. We suspect what’s going on, but wolf and Aralorn’s hypothesizes are well conceived and we agree with them each time. Finally, even if we know some elements, we stay surprised when we learn the true.
I haven’t read book two and three of the Sianim’s series, but I can say that now I would be curious about them. But I confess I would prefer a third volume for our Aralorn. It must be difficult to change for another character now I enjoy this one.

  1. YAY!! I love it when you enjoy a sequel so much more than the first book — that’s exactly the way it’s supposed to be! 🙂 I think I’ll be drawn in by anything that has to do with shapeshifters, and this one sounds like a great second book!

Awesome review, Melliane! I’ve heard tons of amazing things about books by Patricia Briggs before, but now I’m actually thinking of picking this up! 🙂

  2. You are my series guru! You know about so many series I’ve been meaning to read. I love it when the second novel totally takes you by surprise. That’s such a great feeling because it renews you!

  3. @ Mimi Valentine: you’re right it’s so great when it’s this way! I don’t read a lot of fantasy’s books but I really like this series.

@ Missie: Lol and you’re mine too! Yes it’s a nice feeling.

  4. Interesting that you say the first book felt different from this one. Book one was written a while ago and this book recently, no? That may explain that. I just love the covers for these books. Still not sure if I would read these (even though I LOVE her Mercy books) but I won’t cross them off just yet. 😉

  5. @ Melissa (Books and Things): Yes it for that I was surprised it wasn’t the case here. It was was really good!

@ Julie: The first one was her first book of all so as she say in the beginnig of Maques it was a little difficult. It was interesting but there are a lot of long parts. Yes this one is more recent so you can feel the writing style has improved. I think it’s really different from the Mercy books.

  6. I have a bunch of Patricia Briggs books but haven’t had a chance to read any of them yet. I plan to read the Mercy Thompson books soon (though I’ve been saying that for 4 years now…).

  7. @ Melissa (My World…in words and pages): Oh you never read a Patricia Briggs books? You really neet to! The other series is amazing!

@ Celine: Merci beaucoup! You can it’s a pleasure. It was nice, I don’t read a lot of fantasy books.
