Unbroken by Rachel Caine (VO)

Outcast Season, Book 4

Synopsis: For millennia, Cassiel was a powerful Djinn-until she was exiled to live among mortals. Now the threat of an apocalypse looms, and Cassiel is in danger of losing everything she has come to hold dear…

As the world begins to fall apart around her, Cassiel finds herself fighting those she once called her own-the Djinn. With Weather Warden Luis Rocha and the rescued child Ibby by her side, Cassiel struggles to find a way to protect those that are in her charge and come to terms with the leadership role she never asked for.

Cassiel is opposed by a powerful Djinn bent on raising an army of kidnapped Warden children to bring about nothing less than the end of the world. It will take everything Cassiel has to stop the Djinn from starting a war that will wipe all of humanity from the face of the earth. She knows that this might not be a battle she can survive, but protecting those she loves is worth any cost…

Review: I think it’s always quite sad to get into the last book of a series we enjoy a lot. We always hope the novel will have a real end to the story. With all the answers of course and without disappointing us. I confess I haven’t read yet the Weather Warden series that is in the same world. But I’m now very curious to read it to learn more about this whole universe.
This volume concretizes everything we wanted. Well, the war is finally here and hell breaks loose. Cassiel will have to deal with more important things than she would have thought. And I have to say, it won’t be easy between the the attacks, the missions and the concerns, she will have to do a lot for the persons she cares. It’s always very surprising to see how our Djinn has evolved with her new humanity despite she would never be like any other woman. She understands now a lot of concepts but some others are really not for her. It’s however always very touchy to assist to the evolution of her relationship with Luis and Ibby.
I didn’t really understand Es, it’s a strange character and I think it’s always very complicated to know what she really wants. She is so selfish but sometimes she surprises us by her actions. It’s therefore quite difficult to have a real opinion about her.
The Isabel evolution in this fourth volume breaks our heart. We suspected that after all she has been through, she would be changed in an important way. But it’s true I didn’t think she would be like that. She is more mature, without any innocence and in the same time she is always this little 6 years old girl who needs her two parents.
The action is omnipresent all along the book; and everything happens quite fast, without any downtime, getting us in the rhythm of the story. We always learn a lot about Cassiel but also about the other characters and it’s a great pleasure.
I wondered all along the book if the story would have a good end because of all the events. But I have to say I’m finally very happy about the final. It was a really great volume that perfectly ends the series.
I think Rachel Caine has always a particular writing style that allows us to get straight into each of her story. If you enjoyed the three other books, I’m sure it will be the same with this one too. And if it’s not the case yet, what are you waiting for? A story about Djinn? What more can we ask for? I think it’s a very original idea we don’t often meet in books.

  1. I have yet to read anything by Rachel Caine, but I think I would want to read that Weather Warden series first before starting this one since it’s set in the same world.

It’s so exciting when a series gets progressively better, and yet you still have a lot to look forward to!

    • It’s maybe a better idea but I don’t think it’s a poblem otherwise. It’s like a new series too. (well I say that but I haven’t read any of the other series yet). Yes it was a really nice series with a lot a surprises.

  2. Task #1: Read something by Rachel Caine! I can’t believe I haven’t picked something up by her yet, especially with how much you and so many other bloggers love her books! 🙂 And this series sounds like a great place to start! I’m really intrigued about the cool world in this one, and I love characters that grow like Isabel!

Awesome review, Mel! This is definitely one of the more original-sounding books out there — I didn’t even know what Djinn was before your review LOL! x) <3
