Deadtown by Nancy Holzner

Deadtown, Book 1

Synopsis: They call it Deadtown: the city’s quarantined section for its inhuman and undead residents. Most humans stay far from its borders — but Victory Vaughn, Boston’s only professional demon slayer, isn’t exactly human…

Vicky’s demanding job keeping the city safe from all manner of monsters is one reason her relationship with workaholic lawyer (and werewolf) Alexander Kane is in constant limbo. Throw in a foolhardy zombie apprentice, a mysterious demon-plagued client, and a suspicious research facility that’s taken an unwelcome interest in her family, and Vicky’s love life has as much of a pulse as Deadtown’s citizens.
But now Vicky’s got bigger things to worry about. The Hellion who murdered her father ten years ago has somehow broken through Boston’s magical protections. The Hellion is a ruthless force of destruction with a personal grudge against Vicky, and she’s the only one who can stop the demon before it destroys the city and everyone in it.

Review: After reading a very nice review of this book by Mel, I was curious to discover this first volume. I admit that it spent a lot of time in my TBR pile, but I’m glad I was pushed to start it.

Vicky is a young shapeshifter woman who has an outstanding job. In fact, she fights and kills the demons that inhabit people’s dreams, and so they can sleep peacefully. I must say that this is a really addictive work, and as she is the only one who practices this profession, she receives many requests. Her condition of Shapeshifter is also quite unique because despite her sister is one too, she is the only one who accepts that part of herself and who uses it. Our heroine is constantly immersed in the work and the only breaks she takes, allow her to spend some time with her lover, Alexander Kane, werewolf. Well, he is like her, always working, especially now that the elections are soon here and he is fighting against an opponent who wants to wipe the city of all the monsters who live here. I was quite surprised when, starting the book, I discovered that Vicky had a boyfriend, it’s pretty rare to find it in the first book of a urban fantasy series. But this is what adds a little originality to the story at the same time. It is true that we also wonder how our young heroine managed to remain so distant with her lover like that. Because although they are together, they do not see each other a lot and to understand what the other wants.

We can see at the beginning of the novel, the Vicky’s routine until a demon, a hellion, appears in her life, the man who killed her father 10 years ago. This event will totally mess up the life of our heroine, who wants now to revenge his death and then to kill him by any means. Added to this, a research group is determined to have her as a guinea pig to be able to examine her and understand her DNA, something she refuses, although it is not their opinion. They even turn to her sister trying to make her change her mind.

Nancy Holzner has created a very interesting world and I loved to learn more about it. Many creatures live here, including zombies, werewolves, demons, witches or even vampires. I also loved her roommate Juliet and I like the idea of Juliet Capulet, become a vampire, and repeating the story we all know. I had never thought of it and I think it’s a really interesting perspective.

All the characters we meet are really interesting, whether it’s our young Vicky, demons killer; Tina our eccentric zombie; Juliet our little vampire; Kane the werewolf or Daniel the detective. It was a very good novel with a plot that keeps us intrigued throughout the book and I can’t wait to have the second volume to see what Nancy Holzner has concocted.

  1. I’m so happy you liked it!! I thought for a first book in a series it was incredibly well done. You’ll like the second book as well – I have to read the third and fourth books as well! 🙂
