School Spirits by Rachel Hawkins

School Spirits, Book 1

Synopsis: Fifteen-year-old Izzy Brannick was trained to fight monsters. For centuries, her family has hunted magical creatures. But when Izzy’s older sister vanishes without a trace while on a job, Izzy’s mom decides they need to take a break.

Izzy and her mom move to a new town, but they soon discover it’s not as normal as it appears. A series of hauntings has been plaguing the local high school, and Izzy is determined to prove her worth and investigate. But assuming the guise of an average teenager is easier said than done. For a tough girl who’s always been on her own, it’s strange to suddenly make friends and maybe even have a crush.

Can Izzy trust her new friends to help find the secret behind the hauntings before more people get hurt?

Review: I’ve read the first volume of the first Rachel Hawkins series and I really enjoyed it as it was a very nice surprise. So I was eager to read this new novel and see how it was.

Izzy is a very young girl in advance of her age, but since the disappearance of her sister, she is struggling to move on with her life. Living outside of society as a monsters hunter, she has no real friends and traverses cities with her mother when the need arises. But realizing that they have overcome too many obstacles and disappointments about the search for this sister, they decide it’s time to have a break and take a less complicated job. In fact, a ghost appears to terrorize a small school and who is better to take care of this case than Izzy? She will thus have the opportunity to live as a girl of her age and go to school for the first time. And mixing with other students seems more complicated than hunting some monsters. But she will manage to do it, and will even have some friends. But how can she enjoy this new life knowing that she will have to leave in a short time? But there is a more serious problem, the ghost of the school seems more determined to avenge his past.

Izzy is a quite interesting girl to discover but she is also full of doubts and fears. Her life in this small town gives her an idea of what she missed, what they can not have. And yet she remains hopeful. She discovered two adorable people Dex and Romy, two students with whom she quickly creates a friendship link and even more. It was really cute to see them evolve in this situation, trying to figure out if she does not manipulate them for her work. Both protagonists are adorable, Romy does not hesitate to speak her mind but she is also very sweet and calm. Dex is very intriguing, there is something different about him, which confuses our heroine who tries to discover his secrets by all means. There is another character that I really liked and it is Torin. Torin is a former sorcerer, prisoner of a mirror and he also became the only Izzy’s  friend. Of course, he wants only one thing: his release. But she remains determined in her choice and whathever he does, she doesn’t agree. I would love to learn more about him and understand who he really is.

About of the main plot, there are a lot of questions about the culprit of the appearance of the ghost. And I confess that I did not see it coming. It was a very good idea, and the author happens to distort all the assumptions that we have developed throughout the novel. I’m curious to see what will become of our family now, and whether they will come to find the Izzy’s sister. I’d really like to know what happened to her!
