Night Owls, Book 1
Synopsis: Night Owls book store is the one spot on campus open late enough to help out even the most practiced slacker. The employees’ penchant for fighting the evil creatures of the night is just a perk
Valerie McTeague’s business model is simple: provide the students of Edgewood College with a late-night study haven and stay as far away from the underworld conflicts of her vampire brethren as possible. She’s lived that life, and the price she paid was far too high to ever want to return.
Elly Garrett hasn’t known any life except that of fighting the supernatural werewolf-like beings known as Creeps or Jackals. But she always had her mentor and foster father by her side—until he gave his life protecting a book that the Creeps desperately want to get their hands on.
When the book gets stashed at Night Owls for safe keeping, those Val holds nearest and dearest are put in mortal peril. Now Val and Elly will have to team up, along with a mismatched crew of humans, vampires, and lesbian succubi, to stop the Jackals from getting their claws on the book and unleashing unnamed horrors.
Review: Ah, I think I can say that this book was one of those that I wanted the most for the beginning of this year. A new urban fantasy series which promised to be really perfect! In addition, you all know my passion for the genre, so when the ARCs came out, I was more than happy. But I think I expected maybe a little too much unfortunately and I was a little disappointed … But I’ll come back to that later.
We discover Elly, a young girl who finds herself alone after the death of her protector. Become at his side a hunter of Creeps or Jackals, she was always taught to give to these creatures what they want and yet Father Value deviated from this rule and died… She doesn’t know what to do with this book, but she can not accept the surrender and will therefore visit an old friend of her father for advice. But nothing will happen as planned and she will bring with her the chaos that will endanger all those in contact with this book which she knows nothing about. But when later, she will be forced to team up with many different people with various temperaments, her life will change completely. She had always lived alone, she will care now about some and will do everything to help them. But we also follow many other characters in the story and I admit that the change between the chapters really disturbed me at first because I could not understand what was happening and who was who. However, we understand what happens when we progress in the story and we finally meet all the characters. I loved the succubus, Justin, and of course Elly as well. It was interesting to see how they would react to everything that was happening. And despite the life they had so far, the arrival of Elly will change everything and make them think about their future as they all hoped to live normally.
The ideas of the story are really interesting but I really struggled to hang on the characters or the story. I found that it was a bit too long, it does not move enough for me and we have to wait a lot for something to happen. I also had a little trouble reading the whole story but I ‘m still happy because the end reveals many things too. This is also what made me change my 2 stars I wanted to give into three as the conclusion is still good and it made me want to see what the author could give us for the future. But it is true that overall I was pretty disappointed and I think I expected too much. I’ll definitely read Volume 2 to really decide on the series and whether or not I continue. But I ‘m sure this novel will appeal to others.
