—————

Welcome on Between Dreams and Reality. Can you present your new series in a few words?

J – Our initial pitch was Without a Trace meets Angel, only this Angel is an age-old Siren turned FBI Agent who is cursed by mortality and partnered with a hunky alpha werewolf. In search of redemption for past sins, they use the powers of seduction and strength, along with their knowledge of the supernatural and good old-fashioned detective work to rescue damsels, bring big bads to justice, and capture one another’s hearts.

S – The series features two FBI agents that solve missing persons cases with a paranormal twist – one is a Siren, the other a Werewolf. Emma Monroe, the Siren, was banished from Mt. Olympus by Zeus and cursed by Demeter for failing to prevent the kidnapping of Persephone by Hades. She’s been in our world ever since, trying to redeem herself for that epic failure by saving other missing women. In this incarnation, she’s partnered with Zack Armstrong, a hunky Alpha Were with a dark and dangerous past of his own.

How did you come up with the idea of the Fallen Siren series?

J – We were looking for a new twist on the paranormal romance angle. Using a siren came about largely because Samantha has this beautiful painting in her living room of Persephone and Hades. The Sirens were supposed to guard Persephone, but they were tricked and Hades kidnapped her. As a result, Persephone’s mother, Demeter, cursed the sirens. The curse is what is at the crux of our series.

S – The curse and Emma’s quest for redemption is the main focus, but almost as integral is Zack’s journey. He’s on his own path of redemption. One of the reasons he makes such a terrific partner for Emma is that they are very much in sync and on the same journey.

What are the best thing and the worst thing about working with someone else on a same story?

J– There are very few disadvantages and lots of advantages. Our writing styles are very close so it makes it easy to write separately and combine individual scenes into a coherent whole.  I wish we lived closer, though, because when we are together, the ideas just flow.

S – I have to agree with Jeanne here. I wish we lived closer or could see each other in person more often. On the other hand, technology does make collaboration fairly easy. Most important, though, is that our writing styles and personalities mesh well. Jeanne is a great writing partner.

How many books do you intend to write for the series?

J – We laughingly say we’ll write them as long as you read them!!

S – Right now we have three additional novels planned and we’ve pitched those to our editor. Keep your fingers crossed!

List 5 characters from Cursed and do word associations.

J – Emma: Heroine

Zack: Hero

Kallistos: Loyal

Liz: Pal

Johnson: Boss

S – Emma: Earnest

Zack: Noble

Kallistos: Steadfast

Liz: Loyal

Johnson: Tough

What’s the hardest scene for you to write?

J– The sex scenes. Luckily, Sam is an expert!!

S – That sounds weird. LOL! It is true that Jeanne always takes first crack at the heavy action scenes and I do first pass on all the love scenes.

You wrote a prequel for the series, is it important to read it? Is it better to read it in order?

J & S – It’s not necessary, but it does explain Zack and Emma’s past and details their first case together.

Could you describe your average day and writing practices?

J – I found there are no average days. Besides writing, there’s all the marketing stuff that goes along with publication. And then there’s keeping up with social media. And travel (DragonCon in Atlanta over Labor Day). And making time to exercise. And day-to-day housekeeping chores. In between all of that, I try to write everyday.

S – Exactly, and writing with a partner means that sometimes you have to wait for their pages before you can proceed. There are often times we’re able to write simultaneously. But sometimes I need to know where Jeanne takes a scene before I can go on to the next one. Of course, knowing she is waiting on my pages does help keep me on track with deadlines.

Who are some of your influences?

J – Authors Anne Rice, Robert B. Parker, Charlaine Harris, Ira Levin–all for their different writing styles.

S – I was a big reader of mysteries growing up. Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. Then, moving on to Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes. I discovered horror and thrillers and then my current love—Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. Love Charlaine Harris, Laurell K. Hamilton, Rachel Caine, Richelle Mead, I could go on and on…

What can readers expect from the upcoming sequels?

J & S – We’ve broadly outlined three more books with novellas in between. Book five won’t conclude the series, but it will be pivotal. Each of the stories will continue to feature a strong mystery plot. In addition to having a new case to solve, with each installment the relationship arc and Emma’s journey toward redemption will progress.

Do you have a favorite author? Or a favorite book?

J – Anne Rice’s Interview With the Vampire. One of the best, most original vampire stories ever.

S – That’s such a hard question to answer! I agree that Interview With the Vampire was amazing and innovative. This summer I reread Stoker’s Dracula. In fact, I just recently bought Leslie Klinger’s Annotated Dracula. It’s beautiful. One of my favorite contemporary novels is Wicked Lovely – a YA Urban Fantasy by Melissa Marr

Are there any other projects you’re working on or thinking about starting in the near future?

J – I have a mystery (no paranormal elements) up on Amazon now (Wonderland) and I hope it’s the first of many.

S – Jeanne and I are working on a couple other ideas for series. We spent some time together during Comic-Con brainstorming. We’ve narrowed them down to a favorite that we want to develop a bit more before pitching to our agent. Hopefully, she’ll love it as much as we do and find a home for it!

Bienvenue sur Between Dreams and Reality.

Et voyager (DragonCon à Atlanta pendant Labor Day).

Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys.
