Notorious Nineteen by Janet Evanovich

Stephanie Plum, Book 19

Synopsis: New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum is certain of three truths: People don’t just vanish into thin air. Never anger old people. And don’t do what Tiki tells you to do.

After a slow summer of chasing low-level skips for her cousin Vinnie’s bail bonds agency, Stephanie Plum finally lands an assignment that could put her checkbook back in the black. Geoffrey Cubbin, facing trial for embezzling millions from Trenton’s premier assisted-living facility, has mysteriously vanished from the hospital after an emergency appendectomy. Now it’s on Stephanie to track down the con man. Unfortunately, Cubbin has disappeared without a trace, a witness, or his money-hungry wife. Rumors are stirring that he must have had help with the daring escape . . . or that maybe he never made it out of his room alive. Since the hospital staff’s lips seem to be tighter than the security, and it’s hard for Stephanie to blend in to assisted living, Stephanie’s Grandma Mazur goes in undercover. But when a second felon goes missing from the same hospital, Stephanie is forced into working side by side with Trenton’s hottest cop, Joe Morelli, in order to crack the case.

The real problem is, no Cubbin also means no way to pay the rent. Desperate for money—or maybe just desperate—Stephanie accepts a secondary job guarding her secretive and mouthwatering mentor Ranger from a deadly Special Forces adversary. While Stephanie is notorious for finding trouble, she may have found a little more than she bargained for this time around. Then again—a little food poisoning, some threatening notes, and a bridesmaid’s dress with an excess of taffeta never killed anyone . . . or did they? If Stephanie Plum wants to bring in a paycheck, she’ll have to remember: No guts, no glory. . .

Review: I love Stephanie Plum, and Janet Evanovich is really one of my favorite authors (I do not say it enough), then how not to succumb to this 19th novel? I am always impressed by the number of volumes she wrote but it’s always a pleasure to read and reread them. I recommend also the series to everyone, especially to those who have not read it yet, you really will not be disappointed if you like chick-lit. Janet Evanovich is really master of that.

Stephanie is again (yes because it must be said that she has a habit of that) broke (have we already seen her a little richer?). She therefore needs to bring new people to bail them for some money. Unfortunately, the one that interests her the most disappeared from the hospital where he was treated after an operation, and nobody seems to know what he has become, alive or dead. This fact does not seem to bother anyone, not even the police who is not really interested in the case. However, this man could have disappeared with millions stolen from a retirement home, making Stephanie immediately suspicious. His wife would like to understand what happened and above all to find the money now that she is completely broke as well. But this disappearance that we thought quite logical, is far from easy. I admit though, after a time, with Lula’s discoveries and our heroine’s, I started to understand about the reason, once we have a few items on hand. However, I was quite surprised that the duo did not wonder about that. In addition to this, Stephanie takes a second job with Ranger, to help as a bodyguard (yes you doubt that she attracts even more problems). Indeed, a maniac seems to want to target Ranger and an old friend from the special forces. For this she will have to assist him and to participate in the wedding of his friend with a dress which of course is the most horrifying! I also really loved the part where she discovers the dress. But helping save his friend seems much more dangerous than expected when the man decides to take her as a target, believing that  she is in a relationship with Ranger. Stephanie has also a knack for attracting the most deranged madmen.

This novel will also present a lot of bombed cars, hers or others’. Of course it was also full of cakes, donuts and food of all kinds (yes in the end we just want to taste them too !!!). Stephanie still thinks about her relationship with Morelli and Ranger, but we see that she is not the only one either. I’m curious to see who she will choose in the end and at the same time I think it will be impossible. It was certainly a very good novel, I enjoyed this new volume. Stephanie is always crazy and funny as possible. I’m waiting for the next one now!

  1. Oh, my goodness, I just got a serious case of the munchies just from reading the review (it’s almost dinnertime) – but can you imagine what reading the book would do to me? I like the sound of Stephanie, and, I haven’t read this series yet, so it’s going on my list. Wonderful review, thanks 🙂 Enjoy your Sunday!

  2. I have been eyeing this series for years and still haven’t tried it. Maybe I will grab the first book during the summer and see how it goes. I need something funny as I am in the middle of another reading slump… ugh…..

  3. I made it to book 6 or so with this one, I think, and I enjoyed every single one. I prefer her Wicked series, actually, but Stephanie is just as fun. I’ll continue the series as soon as I can, but I have so many books to read. And wait, she hasn’t chosen a guy by book 19? Well, crap. That’s kind of disappointing.
