Truth or Beard by Penny Reid

Winston Brothers, Book 1

Synopsis: Beards, brothers, and bikers! Oh my!

Identical twins Beau and Duane Winston might share the same devastatingly handsome face, but where Beau is outgoing and sociable, Duane is broody and reserved. This is why Jessica James, recent college graduate and perpetual level-headed good girl, has been in naïve and unhealthy infatuation with Beau Winston for most of her life.

His friendly smiles make her tongue-tied and weak-kneed, and she’s never been able to move beyond her childhood crush. Whereas Duane and Jessica have always been adversaries. She can’t stand him, and she’s pretty sure he can’t stand the sight of her…

But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica finds herself in a massive confusion kerfuffle. Jessica James has spent her whole life paralyzed by the fantasy of Beau and her assumptions of Duane’s disdain; therefore she’s unprepared for the reality that is Duane’s insatiable interest, as well as his hot hands and hot mouth and hotter looks. Not helping Jessica’s muddled mind and good girl sensibilities, Duane seems to have gotten himself in trouble with the local biker gang, the Iron Order.

Certainly, Beau’s magic spell is broken. Yet when Jessica finds herself drawn to the man who was always her adversary, now more dangerous than ever, how much of her level-head heart is she willing to risk?

Review: Here is an author I was curious to try after having heard so much about her. I saw this series on a lot of time on blogs and I was curious to immerse myself in this first novel.

Jessica has her life drawn, she knows what she wants! After returning home, she is only waiting to put some money aside to discover the world, a dream she has since little and that she will finally be able to achieve. But returning to town means facing the Winston twins. While Beau always helped her, he was her hero and her crush, her brother Duane is her nemesis, always there to annoy her and to beat her down. Yet, one evening, when she thinks that the man in front of her is Beau, she will go a little further until he rectifies her mistake and his identity. He is not the brother she thought. More confused than ever and even she knows she should hate him, she will slowly fall into his net. Yet she knows that she can not give him the future he wants. She can not offer him more, because she knows that she has to leave and nothing can stop her.

I found this novel very nice and I really liked to discover all the Winston brothers. The mix with the bikers was very interesting too and I was curious to see how things were going to settle. I just have some doubts about some aspects of the story, such as Jessica’s aunt game or Duane’s waiting for Jessica for so long. Even though it’s touching too, I thought maybe it was a little too much to see that Duane was so into her. But this is only a detail, and I must say that it was a good discovery of the author of which I greatly appreciated the humor throughout the novel. And I am now all the more curious to discover the story of other brothers and other characters because it is clear that many things are still standing out!

  1. This is the second review I’ve seen for this author today. (Different book.) And she has been on my radar for a long time. I really want to give her a go!

I understand your frustration – what if she’d never come back? Would he have just withered away waiting for her?

Great review! I’m glad you enjoyed the humor

  2. I love this author and this series. It is connected to the Knitting in the City series which really comes first. It doesn’t matter but eventually it ties in. Beauty and the Mustache is the 4th in Knitting and really the start of this series I’m glad you enjoyed it.
