The Shadow Commission by David Mack

Dark Arts, Book 3

Synopsis: November 1963. Cade and Anja have lived in hiding for a decade, training new mages. Then the assassination of President Kennedy trigger a series of murders whose victims are all magicians–with Cade, Anja, and their allies as its prime targets. Their only hope of survival: learning how to fight back against the sinister cabal known as the Shadow Commission.

Review:  I have not read the previous novels, but I must admit that I was curious to discover the story of this third volume. And then, it must be said that the cover is really very pretty, so how could I resist?

The story takes place in a kind of alternative reality whose story is a bit similar to our own, but with some magic. This is how we find Cade, Anja and their friends after the assassination of President Kennedy. Because on top of all this, our heroes become the target of a cabal and they will have to do everything they can to understand what is going on.

The ideas in this novel are quite nice, although I must admit that I was expecting more. Maybe it’s because I hadn’t read the previous novels, so it’s hard to tell. Apart from that, I had a good time with the story and I was curious to see how our heroes were going to do because it’s far from simple.

It was a good discovery and I’m thinking of trying Volume 1 to see what I missed.
