I Was a Teenage Weredeer by C.T. Phipps & Michael Suttkus

Bright Falls Mysteries, Book 1

Synopsis: Jane Doe is a weredeer, the least-threatening shapechanger species in the world. Blessed with the ability to turn furry at will and psychically read objects, Jane has done her best to live a normal life working as a waitress at the Deerlightful Diner. She has big dreams of escaping life in the supernatural-filled town of Bright Falls, Michigan, and her eighteenth birthday promises the beginning of her teenage dreams coming true.

Unfortunately, her birthday is ruined by the sudden murder of her best friend’s sister in an apparent occult killing. Oh, and her brother is the primary suspect. Allying with an eccentric FBI agent, the local crime lord, and a snarky werecrow, Jane has her work cut out for her in turning her big day around.

Thankfully, she’s game.

Set in the same world as Straight Outta Fangton.

Review: Here was a novel that I had heard some nice things about and I was curious to find out more about it. I haven’t read Straight Outta Fangton, but I will in the future. Anyway, it’s no problem and you can go into this first volume with no worries.

Jane Doe doesn’t like her gifts. In fact, if she comes from a shaman’s family, she has done everything she could to get away from it. She dreams of leaving the city and starting a new life from scratch. But her plans are called into question when her enemy and her best friend’s sister are found murdered. Emma, her friend, asks her for help, but she knows she will have no choice but to find out the truth when her brother becomes a prime suspect. Fortunately for her, the FBI agent in town is happy to have her help and hopes to partner with her to find the murderer.

This quest will bring our heroine to face her family’s past she didn’t know about, the secrets of the city and find out who she really is. Of course, she will also have to face many dangers!

I really enjoyed discovering Alex and Lucien and I must admit that I am curious to see what happens next.

This novel has a touch of YA, but the heroine is 18 years old, and some things are more adult at times, so I’ll say that it’s a very nice UF NA and I can’t wait to get into volume 2!
