Kiss Of Steel (London Steampunk, 1) – Bec McMaster

When Nowhere Is Safe

Most people avoid the dreaded Whitechapel district. For Honoria Todd, it’s the last safe haven. But at what price?

Blade is known as the master of the rookeries—no one dares cross him. It’s been said he faced down the Echelon’s army single-handedly, that ever since being infected by the blood-craving he’s been quicker, stronger, and almost immortal.

When Honoria shows up at his door, his tenuous control comes close to snapping. She’s so…innocent. He doesn’t see her backbone of steel—or that she could be the very salvation he’s been seeking.

Tarnished Knight (London Steampunk, 1.5) – Bec McMaster

In the steam-fuelled world of Victorian London, vampires, werewolves and slasher gangs stalk the night and a man made partly of metal is about to discover just how far he’ll go to protect the woman he loves…

After a vicious vampire attack left him struggling to leash the dark urges of the craving virus, John “Rip” Doolan thinks he’s finally starting to master the darkness within. The only thing that threatens to shatter his hard-won control is Esme, his closest friend and the only woman he’s ever wanted. If the stubborn beauty ever realized precisely what was going through his mind, their friendship would be ruined.

For six months, Esme has waited for Rip to recover and take her as his thrall, not daring to hope for more. Too afraid to put her heart on the line, she is devastated when Rip reveals that he never had any intentions of making her his.

But when a savage gang of Slashers start causing havoc in Whitechapel, Rip and Esme have no choice. They must face up to the depth of the passion that burns between them and forge a new relationship…or risk losing each other forever.

Angelopolis (Angelology, 2) – Danielle Trusson

A decade has passed since Verlaine saw Evangeline alight from the Brooklyn Bridge, the sight of her new wings a betrayal that haunts him still. Now an elite angel hunter for the Society of Angelology, he pursues his mission with single-minded devotion: to capture, imprison, and eliminate her kind.

But when Evangeline suddenly appears on a twilit Paris street, Verlaine finds her nature to be unlike any of the other creatures he so mercilessly pursues, casting him into a spiral of doubt and confusion that only grows when she is abducted before his eyes by a creature who has topped the society’s most-wanted list for more than a century. The ensuing chase drives Verlaine and his fellow angelologists from the shadows of the Eiffel Tower to the palaces of St. Petersburg and deep into the provinces of Siberia and the Black Sea coast, where the truth of Evangeline’s origins—as well as forces that could restore or annihilate them all—lie in wait.

Conceived against an astonishing fresh tableau of history and science, Angelopolis plumbs Russia’s imperial past, modern genetics, and ancient depictions of that most potent angelic appearance—the Annunciation of Gabriel—in a high-octane tale of abduction, treasure seeking, and divine warfare as the fate of humanity once again hangs in the balance.

Bitter Disenchantment (Coveted 0.4) – Shawntelle Madison

Werewolf Natalya Stravinsky’s outspoken sidekick, Aggie McClure, is featured in this prequel novella. Before Agatha set foot in South Toms River, New Jersey, she had the fight of her life to face. Destined to be the alpha female over her Manhattan pack, Aggie was fully prepared to take on her role until her father arranges a marriage without her consent. She wants out–but the only way is with money–something her new controlling husband won’t give her to escape. But such odds never kept a wolf like Aggie down. To sever the twisted tie, she finds herself pitted against raging wood nymphs and backstabbing brownies in an underground supernatural fighting ring. With every victory, the sweet taste of freedom is closer, but her husband isn’t willing to let her go that easily. Until the very end, Aggie must fight for the one thing she’s never had: a choice.

Regret nothing.

Sirantha Jax has the J-gene, which permits her to “jump” faster-than-light ships through grimspace. She loves nothing more than that rush, but the star roads have to wait…

Her final mission takes her to La’heng, a planet subjugated during first contact. Since then, the La’hengrin homeworld has been occupied by foreign conquerors.

All that’s about to change.

Now, as part of a grassroots resistance, Jax means to liberate the La’hengrin. Things aren’t any simpler on the business side of Spellman Investigations. First, Rae is hired to follow a girl, only to fake the surveillance reports. Then a math professor hires Izzy to watch his immaculate apartment while he unravels like a bad formula. And as the questions pile up, Izzy won’t stop hunting for the answers—even when they threaten to shatter both the business and the family.

Bloodstone (Deadtown, 3) – Nancy Holzner

The killer—dubbed the South End Reaper—uses a curved blade for his grisly work. And even though there’s no real evidence pointing to a paranormal culprit, the deaths are straining the already-tense relations between Boston’s human and inhuman residents.

As the bodies pile up, Vicky, her formidable aunt Mab, and her werewolf boyfriend Kane investigate, only to find that the creature behind the carnage is after something much more than blood…

Archangel (Samaria, 1) – Sharon Shinn

And so it came to pass…
Through science, faith and force of will, the Harmonics carved out for themselves a society that they conceived of as perfect. Diverse peoples held together by respect for each other and the prospect of swift punishment if they disobeyed their laws. Fertile land that embraced a variety of climates and seasons. Angels to guard the mortals and mystics to guard the forbidden knowledge. Jehovah to watch over them all…
But an age of corruption has come to the land, threatening their peace and placing the Samarians in grave danger. Their only hope lies in the crowning of a new Archangel. The oracles have chosen for this honor the angel named Gabriel, and further decreed that he must first wed a mortal woman named Rachel.

It is his destiny and hers. And Gabriel is certain that she will greet the news of her betrothal with enthusiasm, and a devotion to duty equal to his own.

Rachel, however, has other ideas…

Review: After a very good first novel, it was a pleasure to immerse myself in the second volume of the adventures of Edie Spence. I enjoyed the first book with its originality and the hospital environment in which we evolve. And this new novel is no exception to the rule!

We find our young heroine in her life full of events. Well, since she knows Anna, she has many more problems than usual. Okay, it’s true, that working in Y4 does not help either. But then when she thought she could have a normal life again, everything turns upside down in a few seconds. Indeed, Anna needs her for her vampiric ceremony, a ceremony that seems very important. In addition to this, she finds herself in the middle of a werewolves power struggle when she saves their pack leader after an accident. But it is not over, her family comes to see her and her brother is here as well, being convinced that he will be able to be a better person now, although she isn’t really convinced about that. I must say that after all the troubles; it is difficult to trust him. And even if she wants to, she realizes that he always manages to find problems whatever he does.

After discovering a first volume that plunges us into the vampires world, this one allows us to discover the werewolves one. And I must say it is much more complex than we might think. We meet some new characters, we quickly enjoy. I especially liked Lucas, the nephew of the pack leader who seems quite interested in our little Edie. And I must say that I completely fell under his spell! I think it is difficult to be otherwise. We find a young man who despite what he would like, has a destiny he doesn’t want. But of course this is impossible and we see how he manages his feelings and how he can control this situation. He is brave, kind, but tough when necessary. However we see the flaws in his shell throughout the story, showing us his fragility. Asher is also there and it’s true he does everything we can to help our heroine, and although I appreciate him, I really think Lucas is as important. However, I was quite surprised to not see our zombie, I thought he would appear in the book, but with all these changes, we finally don’t care about it. There’s so much in this novel and we’re carried away by the story as soon as we read it. I admit that as soon as Lucas is featuring, we only see him!

I really enjoyed this novel and it was difficult to put it down once started. However, I was very surprised by the end of the book. We wonder how Edie will manage to find a way out. This is terrible because once finished we only want more and have the third book in hand. This novel starts some big changes for our heroine and I can not wait to read more. I just have to wait I think.

Baiser Nocturne de Cassie Alexander

Edie Spence, Tome 2

Thomas Kestrel has a problem. Nine years ago, he signed over his soul to save the woman he loved…only to realize he’d been set up. Now, to save himself from damnation, he must find and kill the thirteen key signatories who signed their souls over to the same man he did. Which would be a lot easier if the cute redhead he has nothing in common with wasn’t distributing Ho-Ho’s to the demons wading through soul contracts, creating a riot with talk of labor codes and unionization. He’d fire her if not for the fact that Kate’s irresistibly attractive—or that she’s created a program that makes finding signatories easier.
In fact, it’s so successful, she’s already found one.

The five songs that make me want to write the most:

I have almost no idea how people managed to write books in olden days, when they didn’t have iTunes. (Did Dickens hum hymns to himself, or opera music, or what?) Listening to music is such an essential part of my writing now I almost can’t imagine writing without it. I’m in love with my Pandora stations, and my phone for being always being able to play them.

When I’m actually doing the writing itself I like to listen to a lot wordless techno and trance — I swear it helps my plotting, because it keeps my heart running and my mind fast. Simian Mobile Disco, Infected Mushroom, Phutureprimitive, Eskmo, that sort of thing.

But when I’m thinking about writing, there’s five songs that I love that always make me want to write:

1) Glorious, by Muse

This is an old Muse song that was the extra track on their Japanese album, as an incentive for the more expensive local price. I adore it. I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve listened to it. I love how it comes on slow and then Matt Bellamy sings so poignantly. The lyrics are vague, but you can feel him longing for more, for the entire length of the song. Is it a woman, a relationship, or belief in belief itself? I have a secret theory that this song is a response to the book The Stars My Destination. With it’s refrain about faith, and how it “rockets through the universe, it fuels the lies, it feeds the curse” — it sounds to me like it echos the end of that book where the protagonist is ultimately forced to have faith in the world and that we won’t self destruct. And the lovely part about having a secret theory about a Muse song is that Matt would probably approve, conspiracy theorist that he himself is.

Whatever it is — there’s something that’s just out of reach that he’s building towards, and it is, literally, Glorious.

2) Howl, by Florence and the Machine

So fitting for Moonshifted — it’s about werewolves…and also obsessive love. (Your cool factoid here is that a portion of the lyrics actually come from the movie The Wolf Man: Even a man who is pure in heart, and says his prayers by night, may still become a wolf, when the autumn moon is bright.) The protagonist of this song is willing to do anything to be with her lover — anything. She’s willing to hunt for them with bloodied feet, tear their chest open and crawl on into their heart, if she has to. I love the blending of metaphorical love and the breaking down of rationalism. If you haven’t been in love like that before, you’ve wanted to be. Even if you won’t admit it out loud. It’s the stuff of teenaged dreams, and plotting gold. Your characters have to care about each other, desperately, for your book to work. Otherwise, why write it at all?

3) This River is Wild, by The Killers

Another song about longing — and about a kid who needs to get out of his home town where he doesn’t fit in. Essentially, the plot of every fantasy novel, ever. This song encapsulates that moment when you’re fourteen or so and you know you don’t fit in, but you don’t know where else there is for you to go yet. The restless agitation, the need for escape, the unhappiness, even anger, and an aching uncertainty — this song has it all, all the reasons your character needs to go out on a quest and make bad decisions.

4) Blue Jeans, by Lana Del Rey

There’s nothing like watching your lover walk through the door and out of your life forever for character trauma. The rejection of the man (or woman!) that you loved that you weren’t good enough to keep around — is there any worse pain for your character to feel? Any knife quite so sharp?

5) Infra-red, by Placebo

And the last good thing any plot needs — vengeance. Someone call the ambulance there’s gonna be an accident. When your characters are willing to do whatever they need to exact revenge, when you’ve backed them so far into a corner due to circumstances that the only way they can survive is to come out swinging — you’ve usually got a good book.

I don’t think any of these songs have ever been off my playlist since the times I first heard them. I sing along with them at full volume — and they always make me feel like I have a story in me that I’d better hurry up and tell.

The Wolf Man : Even a man who is pure in heart, and says his prayers by night, may still become a wolf, when the autumn moon is bright.)
3 — This River is Wild, de The Killers

Someone call the ambulance there’s gonna be an accident.

Nightshifted (Edie Spence, 1) – Cassie Alexander
Nursing school prepared Edie Spence for a lot of things. Burn victims? No problem. Severed limbs? Piece of cake. Vampires? No way in hell. But as the newest nurse on Y4, the secret ward hidden in the bowels of County Hospital, Edie has her hands full with every paranormal patient you can imagine—from vamps and were-things to zombies and beyond…

Grey’s Anatomy was never like this…

L’étrange Odd Thomas/Odd Thomas (Odd thomas, 1) – Dean Koontz
“The dead don’t talk. I don’t know why.” But they do try to communicate, with a short-order cook in a small desert town serving as their reluctant confidant. Odd Thomas thinks of himself as an ordinary guy, if possessed of a certain measure of talent at the Pico Mundo Grill and rapturously in love with the most beautiful girl in the world, Stormy Llewellyn. Maybe he has a gift, maybe it’s a curse, Odd has never been sure, but he tries to do his best by the silent souls who seek him out. Sometimes they want justice, and Odd’s otherworldly tips to Pico Mundo’s sympathetic police chief, Wyatt Porter, can solve a crime. Occasionally they can prevent one. But this time it’s different.

A mysterious man comes to town with a voracious appetite, a filing cabinet stuffed with information on the world’s worst killers, and a pack of hyena-like shades following him wherever he goes. Who the man is and what he wants, not even Odd’s deceased informants can tell him. His most ominous clue is a page ripped from a day-by-day calendar for August 15.

Today is August 14.

In less than twenty-four hours, Pico Mundo will awaken to a day of catastrophe. As evil coils under the searing desert sun, Odd travels through the shifting prisms of his world, struggling to avert a looming cataclysm with the aid of his soul mate and an unlikely community of allies that includes the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. His account of two shattering days when past and present, fate and destiny converge is the stuff of our worst nightmares—and a testament by which to live: sanely if not safely, with courage, humor, and a full heart that even in the darkness must persevere.

L’heure de l’Ange/Angel Time – Anne Rice

It’s the present day.  Toby O’Dare—aka Lucky the Fox—is a contract killer of underground fame on assignment to kill once again.  He’s a soulless soul, a dead man walking.  His nightmarish world of lone and lethal missions is disrupted when a mysterious stranger, a seraph, offers him a chance to save rather than destroy lives. O’Dare, who long ago dreamt of being a priest, seizes his chance. Now he is carried back through the ages to thirteenth-century England, to dark realms where accusations of ritual murder have been made against Jews, where children suddenly die or disappear.  In this primitive setting, O’Dare begins his perilous quest for salvation, a journey of danger and flight, loyalty and betrayal, selflessness and love.
