City of the Lost by Kelley Armstrong

Casey Duncan, Book 1

Synopsis: Casey Duncan is a homicide detective with a secret: when she was in college, she killed a man. She was never caught, but he was the grandson of a mobster and she knows that someday this crime will catch up to her. Casey’s best friend, Diana, is on the run from a violent, abusive ex-husband. When Diana’s husband finds her, and Casey herself is attacked shortly after, Casey knows it’s time for the two of them to disappear again.

Diana has heard of a town made for people like her, a town that takes in people on the run who want to shed their old lives. You must apply to live in Rockton and if you’re accepted, it means walking away entirely from your old life, and living off the grid in the wilds of Canada: no cell phones, no Internet, no mail, no computers, very little electricity, and no way of getting in or out without the town council’s approval. As a murderer, Casey isn’t a good candidate, but she has something they want: She’s a homicide detective, and Rockton has just had its first real murder. She and Diana are in. However, soon after arriving, Casey realizes that the identity of a murderer isn’t the only secret Rockton is hiding—in fact, she starts to wonder if she and Diana might be in even more danger in Rockton than they were in their old lives.

Review: I was really excited to get into this new series by Kelley Armstrong. I usually like her novels a lot and I’ve seen some very nice reviews of this series, so how can I resist it?

I admit, however, that I am a little disappointed. I think the basic idea has already been too seen and reviewed. A village lost in the woods? A forest around where would live hostile beings who can kill? Yes, I was disappointed because it is a very common theme and I was expecting more. But all is not negative because that aside, the author’s ideas are very nice and I had a good time with the characters.

Diana and Casey are two young women fleeing their past, but when it catches them both, they know they have to disappear and what’s better than Rockton? Indeed, it seems that this city is all they expect, after paying a certain amount and a very thorough investigation, they can finally leave in this city for 2 years to keep a low profile. But just arrived, Casey will be put to the test to discover the identity of a killer and in a city where everyone has created a character, it will not be easy.

What I preferred in this novel are the characters, their secrets and interactions. We doubt everyone, wondering what exactly they are hiding, if the person they are proposing is not really who they are. I thought it was good and I loved following our beloved heroine’s investigation, as well as seeing how Rockton was handled.

It was a good read and I am curious to discover the secrets we do not know yet.

Casey Duncan, Tome 1

Rituals by Kelley Armstrong

Cainsville, Book 5

Synopsis: The fifth book and the exciting conclusion to bestselling author Kelley Armstrong’s “impossible-to-put-down” Cainsville series, in which she mixes hard-hitting crime writing with phenomenal world-building to create a brand of fiction all her own.

When Olivia Taylor-Jones found out she was not actually the adopted child of a privileged Chicago family but of a notorious pair of convicted serial killers, her life exploded. Running from the fall-out, she found a refuge in the secluded but oddly welcoming town of Cainsville, Illinois, but she couldn’t resist trying to dig out the truth about her birth parents’ crimes. She began working with Gabriel Walsh, a fiendishly successful criminal lawyer who also had links to the town; their investigation soon revealed Celtic mysteries at work in Cainsville, and also entangled Olivia in a tense love triangle with the calculating Gabriel and her charming biker boyfriend, Ricky. Worse, troubling visions revealed to Olivia that the three of them were reenacting an ancient drama pitting the elders of Cainsville against the mysterious Huntsmen with Olivia as the prize.

In the series’ fifth and final novel, not only does Gabriel’s drug addict mother, who he thought was dead, make a surprise reappearance, but Kelley Armstrong delivers a final scary and surprising knock-out twist. It turns out a third supernatural force has been at work all along, a dark and malevolent entity that has had its eye on Olivia since she was a baby and wants to win at any cost.

Review: I loved the other volumes of the series and I was impatient to be able to read this last volume to know how our heroes were going to get away with such a fate.

While Olivia tries to manage her separation from Ricky and her feelings for Gabriel, she must also be careful not to repeat the same mistakes as in her other lives. But if she had only that to manage… Here a woman pretending to be Seanna shows up in town and wants to see her son. While Gabriel has to face once more his past, Olivia will have to manage the new problems that accumulate. Indeed, a third force seems to be present from the beginning and is ready for anything to conquer her … and unlike the others, she is not interested in the choice of the young woman.

I really liked this last volume. We learn a lot about the characters’ past and what really happened with the parents of our heroine. She had fairly preconceived notions about her mother and father but it is true that we finally understand that nothing is necessarily black or white and that although they have both greatly participated in different ways to the murders, they also did it out of love.

The relationship between Olivia and the two men of her life is quite difficult because we wait at any time for it to slip. Moreover, the events are sometimes heart-breaking, but this time, each of the characters knows what to do.

You will understand that it is a very good conclusion for the series. It has not been easy, but all our heroes remained the same until the end!

Rituals de Kelley Armstrong (VO)

Cainsville, Tome 5

Betrayals by Kelley Armstrong

Cainsville, Book 4

Synopsis: Olivia Jones knows a lot about betrayal – most of her life has been a lie. On the eve of her wedding, she discovered she was adopted – and that her biological parents were convicted serial killers.

Liv has found sanctuary in her new home of Cainsville, but she’s learned not to trust the town’s mysterious elders. So when her biker boyfriend Ricky Gallagher is linked to a series of murders, she’s reluctant to ask for their help. Meanwhile things have grown increasingly complicated with Gabriel Walsh, her boss and sometime friend. The fact that their fraught relationship is connected to an ancient myth in which they were passionate lovers doesn’t help matters, either…

As Liv fights to clear Ricky’s name, she discovers that her own life is at serious risk. Soon Ricky, Liv and Gabriel are tangled in a web of a betrayals. In order to survive, they will have to trust one another. But given their dark history, is that even possible? Or wise…?

Review: I love this series and although I thought at first that we had a trilogy, I was curious to get into this fourth volume! How not to be with all these intertwine fates and the persons trying to influence the decisions of our three main characters.

We thus find Olivia, Ricky and Gabriel for a new story that will put a strain on their feelings. Indeed, it seems that girls are murdered and that Ricky is related to all that happens and nobody understands why. You can imagine that when it comes to one of the men, Olivia is desperate to try to understand what is going on to clear their name. But now, this story will stage many different faes and Olivia will make choices that will impact her for the future.

I’m not giving too much away about the story not to spoil things but we are easily carried away by the chapters. The revelations follow one another about the past of the characters and it is true that I was fascinated by all the events. We are foretold a great betrayal in the story and I admit that I was really curious to see what would really happen! It also feels that the past of our heroes past catches them up and they can not handle what happens. It’s quite impressive to see that they are all affected by what happens and nobody knows how to really act. Besides, I did not expect at all for such a purpose and I admit that I am very surprised. I wonder what will be the consequences elsewhere.

It was once again a very good book and I’m curious to find out more. As I said, we have many revelations and I was fascinated by what the author has presented us. I urge you to start the series if it is not the case already, you will find something unique and different, which it must be said, is still very nice!

Betrayals de Kelley Armstrong (VO)

Cainsville, Tome 4

Deceptions by Kelley Armstrong

Cainsville, Book 3

Synopsis: TRUST NO ONE

Olivia Jones is desperate for the truth. The daughter of convicted serial killers, she has begun to suspect that her parents are innocent of their crimes. But who can she trust, in a world where betrayal and deception hide in every shadow?

RISK EVERYTHING

Liv does have one secret weapon: a mysterious sixth sense that helps her to anticipate danger. The trouble is, this rare power comes with its own risks. There are dark forces that want to exploit Liv’s talents – and will stop at nothing to win her to their side.

FACE THE TRUTH

Now Liv must decide, before it’s too late. Who does she love? Who is really on her side? And can she save herself without burning down everything that matters most?

Review: I loved the first and second books in the series so as soon as this new novel was announced, I threw myself on it to pre-order it. Admittedly, Kelley Armstrong has managed to create something really interesting and intriguing and I was excited to finally understand the truth about the world that the author had presented so far.

As I said we finally have our answers in this novel and I admit that I was caught by the story and the characters from the beginning of the first chapter. I had so many questions and I was really excited to find out what was going to happen now. Olivia must again confront many events … Oh yes, between James and his obsessions about her which only grow stronger and become more and more unhealthy, or the issues about the Todd and Pamela’s guilt over the murders perpetrated, but also the forces that operate in the shadows and trying to influence the choices of our heroine. But that’s not all because of Liv’s feelings are very difficult to identify for the two men in her life. Do not worry, there is no love triangles, Olivia is sure of her choice but that does not change the tensions.

I admit that I was really curious to understand the purpose of the story related to Olivia, to really understand the legend that catches up and interferes in her life and whether she could free herself from all that or not. Moreover, it is a little difficult to know everything but then the author gives us a huge response to our delight. I was very surprised by the death of a major character in the story and I confess that I was not expecting it. But that’s not all because as I said, many surprises await us here, particularly about Pamela and Todd and I confess that I did not think the story would take this direction.

In all cases, Liv evolves a lot over the chapters and the books and it’s always a pleasure to discover more about her although she endures many visions that are becoming more and more difficult to manage. Gabriel is faithful to himself, to his stoicism and his desire to understand nothing, not wanting to see the truth even when it is in front of him and his attempts to keep a clear mind. And then we have Ricky. Oh the dear biker who can only steal our heart, this bad boy who makes us love him as our heroine. This is the kind of biker that I would like to read more, the kind of boy we love to discover. Both are present here to help Olivia and they will do everything to protect her. These are two people in gold.

As you can see, I had a great time with the story once again. I do not know if this is really the end, but it was a very good third volume. I highly recommend the series!
