City of Endless Night by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child

Pendergast, Book 17

Synopsis: When Grace Ozmian, the beautiful and reckless daughter of a wealthy tech billionaire, first goes missing, the NYPD assumes she has simply sped off on another wild adventure. Until the young woman’s body is discovered in an abandoned warehouse in Queens, the head nowhere to be found.

Lieutenant CDS Vincent D’Agosta quickly takes the lead. He knows his investigation will attract fierce scrutiny, so D’Agosta is delighted when FBI Special Agent A.X.L. Pendergast shows up at the crime scene assigned to the case. “I feel rather like Brer Rabbit being thrown into the briar patch,” Pendergast tells D’Agosta, “because I have found you here, in charge. Just like when we first met, back at the Museum of Natural History.”

But neither Pendergast nor D’Agosta are prepared for what lies ahead. A diabolical presence is haunting the greater metropolitan area, and Grace Ozmian was only the first of many victims to be murdered . . . and decapitated. Worse still, there’s something unique to the city itself that has attracted the evil eye of the killer.

As mass hysteria sets in, Pendergast and D’Agosta find themselves in the crosshairs of an opponent who has threatened the very lifeblood of the city. It’ll take all of Pendergast’s skill to unmask this most dangerous foe-let alone survive to tell the tale.

Review: I had a good time with the previous volume but I must say that I was completely carried away by this 17th novel. How to put it down before finished? This is an existential question because, for my part, I had a lot of trouble and I was eager to discover more! The authors manage perfectly to keep us in suspense until the end of the story!

Pendergast is trying to cope with the latest events with difficulty, and yet here he is again in a new affair that will need his enlightenment, accompanied by Lieutenant D’Agosta! A killer is in town and he seems to target wealthy people and to behead them. Nobody knows if the killer is one and the same person or if they have a copycat. Finding even one clue is almost impossible, so when people press the police to find a link it’s all the more complicated. Our two investigators will have to team up and especially dig their heads to try to understand what is happening and especially to stop the killers!

I found that the investigation was really well conducted, I had trouble finding the motives for the murders or even the identity of the culprit. There are several reversals of situations that I did not see coming and I must say that I was completely caught up in the story. I also found the end touching and I’m curious to see what will happen. The duo of author has once again managed to conquer me and I am impressed when we know that it is the 17th volume!

Nuit sans Fin de Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child

Pendergast, Tome 17

Erin Blake, Book 2

Synopsis: Barely three weeks after catching the killer of Erin’s mother and their biology teacher, Erin and her crew are back, up to their elbows in forensics projects. But this time it’s with the full approval of their parents.

With Uncle Victor at the helm, Erin and her best friends, Spam and Lysa, are prepping a new classroom for CSI summer camp, where they will serve as camp counselors. Meanwhile, Erin’s super-hot new boyfriend, Journey, is graduating, just in time for him to take a position as Victor’s intern in the new CSI lab on campus. Journey and Victor are going to take another look at the evidence in the murder trial that sent Journey’s father to prison. The girls are under strict orders not to meddle with the murder case, but that’s easier said than done…

Review: Here is a series that I was curious to try and even if I did not read the first volume I was very intrigued to discover this second one. I must say now that I had a great time and I can not wait to read more (including the first volume!)

Erin, Lysa and Spam have investigations in their blood and even when they try to be wise and discreet, this is something they can not escape. Yet they know that they can not make waves, that they have to be careful, especially as they are being watched by their parents. However, this time, good news came out, they were invited to become advisers for the new CSI summer camp. How to refuse such an offer? Especially when it’s Victor who is organizing it! But in addition to being able to look only from outside the progress of Victor and Journey’s investigation (something that is more complicated than expected, especially for Erin, Journey’s girlfriend), they find themselves embarked in a new story featuring a mysterious young man.

I really had a good time with this novel and I loved following our three heroines in their research and suspicions. We understand perfectly well that it is difficult for them to stand back. In addition to the vagaries of life, we follow the two cases in parallel and it is true that I was impatient to discover the truth behind all these events. I must say that I was really surprised by the end of the story because I really did not expect it!

Erin Blake, Tome 2

Lillian Frost & Edith Head, Book 2

Synopsis: Classic Hollywood. Silver Screen Style. Vintage Murder. A champagne cocktail of a mystery covered in movie magic stardust

December 1938. Lillian Frost has plunged head first into a world of boldfaced names and endless glamour as social secretary to movie-mad millionaire Addison Rice. Costume designer Edith Head is now in charge of Paramount Pictures’ wardrobe department, although her position is precarious: potential replacements are being auditioned on a regular basis. The two friends again become partners thanks to an international scandal: a real-life incident, a historical footnot long forgotten, in which the war clouds gathering over Europe cast a shadow on Hollywood.

At a swanky Manhattan dinner party the well-heeled guests speak ill of Adolf Hitler in front of a German maid with Nazi sympathies. The secrets she spills soon have all of New York society running for cover–and two of Paramount’s biggest stars, Jack Benny and George Burns, facing smuggling charges.

When an émigré composer seeking work at Paramount is found dead, Marlene Dietrich tells Edith she blames agents of the Reich. As Lillian and Edith unravel intrigue that extends from Paramount’s fabled Bronson Gate to FDR’s Oval Office, only one thing is certain: they’ll do it in style.

Review: I had a great time with the first volume. Lillian’s investigations are interesting and full of twists and turns. Besides, our heroine has to face a new problem. Indeed, Marlene Dietrich is looking for one of her old friends, a German emigrant, whom she wants to hire for his talents as a pianist. But it seems that he has disappeared.

In a background of World War II, or at least with the echoes of the Nazism in Hollywood, Lillian will set foot in a story that surpasses her. Between American spies and Nazi spies, our heroine will not know where to turn to. With the war approaching rapidly, no one knows what to think and the population is quietly deciding. Lillian’s adventures will lead her to meet many characters and when she discovers the body of the man she was looking for, she will realize that others wanted to find him. Monitored by all, our heroine will try to disentangle the true from the false with the help of her friends.

During this investigation, she will cross the road of a driver: Simon. He is an enigmatic man, hard to pin down and of whom it will be difficult to know on which side he is. I really enjoyed seeing his interactions with Lillian and I confess that I am curious to see what the sequel will bring us. Of course, there is Gene too, but it’s also difficult to decide on him. His relationship with Lillian is quite strange and complicated.

In any case, I had a great time once again with this story and I hope that we will have more because I am curious to discover a new investigation!

Dangerous to Know de Renee Patrick (VO)

Lillian Frost & Edith Head, Tome 2

City of Lies by Victoria Thompson

Counterfeit Lady, Book 1

Synopsis: Elizabeth Miles scours 1920’s Washington, D.C. for a killer in the first Counterfeit Lady novel from the author of the New York Times bestselling Gaslight mysteries.

Every woman plays a part—but some are more dangerous than others…

Like most women, Elizabeth Miles assumes many roles; unlike most, hers have made her a woman on the run. Living on the edge of society, Elizabeth uses her guile to relieve so-called respectable men of their ill-gotten gains. But brutal and greedy entrepreneur Oscar Thornton is out for blood. He’s lost a great deal of money and is not going to forgive a woman for outwitting him. With his thugs hot on her trail, Elizabeth seizes the moment to blend in with a group of women who have an agenda of their own.

She never expects to like or understand these privileged women, but she soon comes to respect their intentions, forming an unlikely bond with the wealthy matriarch of the group whose son Gabriel is the rarest of species—an honest man in a dishonest world. She knows she’s playing a risky game, and her deception could be revealed at any moment, possibly even by sharp-eyed Gabriel. Nor has she been forgotten by Thornton, who’s biding his time within this gilded orbit, waiting to strike. Elizabeth must draw on her wits and every last ounce of courage she possesses to keep her new life from being cut short by this vicious shadow from her past.

Review: I must say that I did not know about the novel at all but I really had a great time with the story. What to say? Everything seemed fantastic!

We discover Elizabeth Miles, a young girl who used to live on the margins of society. With her friends, she usually organizes scams to steal money from dishonest rich men. But while she usually does not have problems after these acts, the latest victim is far from appreciating it. Determined to find Elizabeth and to force her to return his money, or even to kill her, he will pursue her without respite. Yet the young woman, full of resources, does not hesitate to place herself in a feminist manifestation that demands the right to vote in order to escape her pursuers. Putting herself as a woman she is not, she gets arrested by the police and she is sent with all the others to jail. And you suspect that she is one of the only girls who absolutely wants to stay there to be safe. But then, under these conditions, she did not expect to connect so easily to Anna, a young febrile woman or to the matriarch of the group for which she will have great esteem. Elizabeth will help them understand how to act in jail and she will watch over them as best as she can. In parallel, we discover Gabriel, the son of the matriarch who arrives in town determined to save these young women. Thornton, allying himself with him, is also very interested to get them out!

I will not say more because it would be very easy to tell you everything but I can tell you that this novel is a pretty little pearl. I loved to follow Elizabeth, see her change at the touch of these young women and see her regret not to be a better person. It was also really interesting to have such a big part devoted to the cause that these women fight for! It was fascinating to have such a theme and it is true that we realize what these women have suffered a lot in order to advance their rights.

It was really a great story and I loved all the characters, be it Gabriel is his frankness, Elizabeth and her scams, Thornthon and his wickedness, Anna and her naïveté, and many other things that I’ll leave you discover!
