The Seer’s Choice by J. Kathleen Cheney

The Golden City

Synopsis: Genoveva Jardim’s father was a monster—a defrocked priest who used his healer’s gift to murder instead. Determined to make amends for the deaths her father brought to the Golden City, she turned her back on her life among the aristocracy. She’s chosen to work for the Special Police, learning how to use the healer’s gift she’d never even known she had. She wants to save lives instead of killing like her father.

Rafael Pinheiro has kept an eye on Miss Jardim for some time now. The very first time he met her, his seer’s gift told him he would someday marry her. What he can’t figure out is why he would choose her. She’s young and an aristocrat—hardly a match for a mere police captain raised in an orphanage. They don’t seem to have anything in common.

But when Miss Jardim’s life is threatened, everything changes…

Review: I enjoyed the first three volumes and learning that the author had written two more novellas after the end of the story, I admit that I was curious to discover them. I wondered if these short stories would take place during or after the story and it was nice to discover what happened to the other secondary characters a bit more, because yes, we follow here Rafael and Genova, two protagonists previously discovered. Moreover, even if we have the mention of Duilio and Joaquim, the story really focuses on these two!

So as I said here we follow Genova and Rafael. Both work in the special police but they did not expect to have a case concerning the young woman that would unite them. Indeed, it would seem that a man is harassing Miss Jardim and even if she wanted to handle the problems alone, she realizes very quickly that this is not possible. And that’s where something is starting to appear between her and our dear captain.

I will not say more not to spoil the reading (which you can imagine is pretty fast) but I had a good time with it. It was nice to see the universe and to know the future of some other characters. I’m just a bit disappointed about the fast relationship, and I would have liked a little more development, but it was an enjoyable read and I am curious to read the second story now!

The Seer’s Choice de J. Kathleen Cheney (VO)

The Golden City

After the War by J. K. Cheney

The Golden City

Synopsis: After the Great War, Alejandro Ferreira wandered across Europe, unable even to remember his name, until one night in Lisboa, a young woman recognizes him. She brings him home to his family–one he can’t recall, but very much wants to keep.
His seer’s gift has been as much of a trial as a blessing. It didn’t keep him out of trouble during the Great War, either–someone cursed him to lose his memory. Someone else is after him, wanting him to keep a secret he doesn’t even remember he has. And he quickly learns that all is not well between himself and his lovely wife. Without his memories or his seer’s gift, can Alejandro rebuild his life and unveil his stalker before they eliminate him?

Review: Here’s the latest novella of The Golden City series and it’s true that it’s a pleasure to find the characters again. We start this time much later, years after the third book and we find our characters in the continuity of their life. Yet this time, we will not see Duilio or Oriana but Joaquim, Marina, and of course, the main characters: Alejandro and Serafina.

I will not say much about the story as it is already very short but Alejandro returns to town after he left for war without knowing who he really is, having lost his memory. Thus he meets a woman who claims to be his wife and explains who he really is. Yet nothing will be simple and it seems that someone is looking for him. Moreover, the more he learns about his former self and the more he realizes that he does not like the person he was and he will have to decide who he wants to be now.

It was nice to follow the characters and to dive as always into the world of J. K. Cheney as it is a real pleasure. I do not know if we will have the opportunity to find the author for this series again but it was certainly a nice discovery.

After the War de J. K. Cheney (VO)

The Golden City

The Shores of Spain by J. Kathleen Cheney

The Golden City, Book 3

Synopsis: Even as the branches of peace are being offered, there are some who still believe those who are not human should be used as chattel. And they are willing to go to great lengths to retain their power.

Newlywed siren Oriana Paredes has been appointed Ambassador to her home islands now that communication between Northern Portugual and the magical races has been restored. But convincing her people that the new Portuguese Prince’s intentions are honorable after years of persecution is difficult. And her husband, Duilio, faces his own obstacles among the sirens where males are a rare and valuable commodity with few rights.

In addition to their diplomatic mission, the two hope to uncover the truth behind Oriana’s mother’s death. Evidence suggests that Spain—a country that has been known to enslave magical beings—may have infiltrated the siren authority. Unable to leave their post, Oriana and Duilio must call on Inspector Joaquim Tavares to root out the truth.

But even his seer’s gift cannot prepare him for what he will discover.

Review: I was eager to read this third novel after the first two! It was nice to find that last book featuring all the characters we love. Unlike the others, however, the story is divided between Joaquim, Mariana, and Oriana and Duilio, allowing us to learn more about all the characters that were secondary.

Duilio and Oriana depart for the sirea islands as ambassadors to explain to her peers about the new government set up in Portugal and the rights that sireas might have now. This new position also allows to our heroine to try to understand her past and especially the murder of her mother as it remains unsolved so far. But this survey will push deep plots, forcing them to seek help and Mariana Joaquim who will have travel to Spain, where new dangers await them.

It was interesting to discover the culture of the sireas to see their lifestyle and to visit different countries between Spain and Portugal. It’s always a pleasure to find Oriana and Duilio after seeing the first attempt to integrate into the human world, we see her husband doing the same in this new environment that has nothing to do with all that he has seen before. The young woman will finally find her place, to understand what she wants for her future and it is a pleasure to see her growing and evolving with her relatives. It’s true that what I liked the most was to discover all the revelations that we have about her family and it was fascinating to learn them that way. It is the same for Joaquim and Mariana who gradually learn to coexist together and to accept the other and it was very touching to see their relationship evolve gradually.

It was a good book, a nice end to this trilogy and I am now curious to read the novellas associated!

The Shores of Spain de J. Kathleen Cheney (VO)

The Golden City, Tome 3

The Seat of Magic by J. Kathleen Cheney

The Golden City, Book 2

Synopsis: Magical beings have been banned from the Golden City for decades, though many live there in secret. Now humans and nonhumans alike are in danger as evil stalks the streets, growing more powerful with every kill….

It’s been two weeks since Oriana Paredes was banished from the Golden City. Police consultant Duilio Ferreira, who himself has a talent he must keep secret, can’t escape the feeling that, though she’s supposedly returned home to her people, Oriana is in danger.

Adding to Duilio’s concerns is a string of recent murders in the city. Three victims have already been found, each without a mark upon her body. When a selkie under his brother’s protection goes missing, Duilio fears the killer is also targeting nonhuman prey.

To protect Oriana and uncover the truth, Duilio will have to risk revealing his own identity, put his trust in some unlikely allies, and consult a rare and malevolent text known as The Seat of Magic….

Review: I really loved the first book and I could not wait to be able to immerse myself in the second volume and find all the characters again. It took some time, I confess, to achieve that but it was a pleasure to get into this fantastic world.

We thus find Duilio facing many problems. Indeed, he does not understand why Oriana who went back home, haven’t returned yet and is very concerned for her, convinced that something happened to her. His relatives do not help as they are constantly asking if she is finally back or not. But in addition to this, Duilio must also face some new gruesome murders that seem perpetrated by a healer and which affect humans as well as non-humans. Yet the absence of evidence makes the tracking very difficult.

I loved follow this second volume, to see the relationship between Duilio and Oriana evolve this way and it’s true that it was interesting to see the encounter between two so different cultures to see what they could do together. But I also really enjoyed learning more about the sirea, and to learn more about Oriana, her past and her history. There are many events that we did not know about and the truth comes out here. It was a delight to follow and I was really curious to know the end of the story. I can tell you that you will not be disappointed because the author presents revelations after revelations and we are always eager to learn more. We also meet a large community that is not necessarily expected and I loved to discover so many new characters that I hope to see very soon.

I think the main advantage of this series is the world that JK Cheney has created. Indeed, it is quite impressive and fascinating to see all she has managed to create here and she easily wins us. This is already a huge point, but when in addition the plot and characters follow are also well done, what more can we ask for? It was a great discovery and I am, as you can imagine, eager to immerse myself in the sequel and to follow the adventures of our characters!
