And here it is, a new post for our event. Don’t forget to check the new links here. Indeed, you can find a new author on Carien‘s blog as well. So today, you’ll discover Sally MacKenzie, the author of two wonderful regency romances. Thanks to Sally for this nice interview!

———–

Can you present you in a few words?

I live in Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C., and write funny, hot, Regency-set romances, much to the amusement–or horror–of my husband and four sons (and two daughters-in-law). The “Naked nobility” (seven books and two novellas) was my first series; the “Duchess of Love” is my second.

How would you describe the Duchess of Love series?

Miss Venus Collingswood has always been a matchmaker. In “The Duchess of Love,” the novella that begins the series, she is trying to find a match for her bookworm sister–and ends up catching a duke for herself. The three books–Bedding Lord Ned, Surprising Lord Jack, and Loving Lord Ash–are set thirty years later. Venus, now the “Duchess of Love,” is the ton’s premier matchmaker, but the matches she most wants to make or mend are those of her three sons.

What would you most like potential readers to know about you and/or your book?I was a huge fan of Georgette Heyer when I was a schoolgirl. I recently re-read one of her stories, and even though the plot wasn’t quite my cup of tea, I still laughed out loud. I strive for a similar humor in my books, albeit with a bit more “spice.”

When I was about 10 or 11 years old, I decided I wanted to be a writer. It took a while to achieve that goal, and I’ll confess I got distracted along the way–raising four sons can do that to a person. It wasn’t until I turned 50 that I sold my first book, The Naked Duke. It was a great way to enter the “empty nest” stage of life!

If you could, would you change places with any of your characters?

I wanted to change places with Georgette Heyer’s heroines when I was a young girl. I wanted to live in a grand house and marry a handsome, wealthy noble, even if that felt rather un-American (and un-feminist). But now–no I don’t want to change places with mine or anyone else’s characters. I’m very happy with my own hero and the four sons we’ve raised. (And if either of the two married ones would like to produce a grandchild or two, I certainly wouldn’t complain, lol.) I am also quite attached to indoor plumbing, air conditioning, modern medicine, and washing machines. (Being of mostly Irish heritage, I realized I’d more likely be the maid than the mistress in Regency England.)

List 5 characters from the Duchess of Love series  and do word associations.

Venus, Duchess of Love: well-meaning matchmaker who’s not beyond a little meddling

Ned, the hero of Bedding Lord Ned: widower, worrier, needs his childhood friend (with a little help from his mother) to show him that love is closer than he thinks

Jack, the hero of Surprising Lord Jack: teasing troublemaker (for a good cause), has a secret, knows his way around London’s underbelly

And the animals:

Sir Reginald, the duchess’s cat–crafty, match-making thief

Shakespeare, dog Jack and Frances find in the London stews–intelligent, can wrap people around his paw with his tricks, but brave and loyal

What is the most memorable moment (good, bad, or other) you have had in your life as an author?

Well, by far the weirdest experience was when a reader approached me at a large book signing to tell me how much she hated my books. Since she said it in the same tone people use when they say they love my books, I didn’t feel attacked. I think I reacted pretty calmly. She told me everything thing she didn’t like–and I spent most of our conversation trying to recall what bits of the stories she was talking about. It was one of the more surreal experiences of my life.

Of course there are many, many happier memorable moments. I love meeting readers who do like my books. And meeting my French publisher at a signing was definitely a thrill! Maybe someday I’ll come to France for a visit. The last time I was there was, ahem, a few years ago…

When you sit down and write do you know how the story will end or do you just let the pen take you?

I always know my hero and heroine will live happily ever after!

I don’t outline my books before I write them, so I don’t know scene by scene what will happen. The Naked books sort of grew out of each other. I would get to know the next hero and/or heroine in the book or two before their book. But when I moved on to the Duchess of Love, I had to plan the series from scratch. So I spent some time brainstorming with my agent to get the core pieces of the series–a match-making mother and her three sons. Then I had to write a proposal for my editor. I spent a lot of time musing and scribbling in a notebook, fleshing out the characters and what might happen to them. I wrote a short overview of how the books fit together, and then a little summary of each book–though the details of Jack’s and Ash’s books were very, very vague.

Whenever I start writing, things change. The characters have a way of deciding what they want to do, and I try to keep my eyes open and follow where they lead me. Here’s an example: In Surprising Lord Jack, Jack and Frances come upon a stray dog. The boy who is watching Jack’s carriage tells them the dog’s name is Shakespeare and he belonged to a local actor who’s recently left London rather suddenly. I thought it was odd that the man would leave his dog behind, but it wasn’t until I was almost at the end of the book that Shakespeare’s owner appeared and I discovered why he’d fled.

What is the best thing about being a published author?

The very best thing about being a published author is hearing from readers–either in person or via email–who have enjoyed the stories. (Hearing from readers who hate my books is somewhat less wonderful ;).) It’s always a bit of a surprise and a great pleasure to discover my literary “children” have found a home in someone else’s heart.

And, given that writing has been an “after kids” career for me, it’s been a great adventure. I am SO tickled that my books can be read in French and other languages.

What authors have been an influence for you? And have you read any books lately that you want to share with us or have you been too busy with writing to read?

As I’ve said, my main influence was Georgette Heyer. I used to share her books with my mother, another Regency fan. When I was raising my sons, mom and I would go to the bookstore once a month to pick up the newest Regencies, books by such authors as Mary Balogh, Marian Chesney, Marion Devon, Edith Layton, and Joan Wolf. Sadly, I don’t read as much as I used to–I am too busy writing!

Are there any other projects you’re working on or thinking about starting in the near future?

Top secret, lol, even from me!!  I finished the last book in the Duchess of Love series–Loving Lord Ash. It will be out in the States next March. Now I’m just beginning to think about a next series.

  2. Hi, everyone! I’ll have to wait until my husband gets home to help me translate the comments in French, but I gather you like the books! And I have great news!! I just found out yesterday that the two Naked novellas (The Naked Laird and The Naked Prince) as well as the novella that is the prequel to Ned and Jack’s books–The Duchess of Love–have all sold French rights, so they will be coming to you eventually.

At the moment I’m going through the copy edits for Ash’s book (Loving Lord Ash) which will be out in the States in March. So back to those. I’m trying to tweak everything so the story is the best it can be, but sometimes my head feels like it’s going to explode. They are due Tuesday. (Well, they were due yesterday, but that didn’t happen. ;( So back to work for me.)

  3. I’ve always been meaning to start this series because the books sound like so much fun, but I haven’t had the chance yet. I think I need to get started right away. 😀

  4. I love Georgette Heyer as well! I remember you did another post about this author a long time ago and I thought her books sounded really good. I have them on my tbr list but I haven’t read anything yet. Thanks for the chance to win this 🙂

  5. I read Sally’s The Naked series and love it.
Very fun to read this interview and looking forward to read another series from Sally.

  6. Thanks for the nice interview ladies, I enjoyed reading it. I did enjoy the Naked series a lot, but still have to start the Duchess in Love series. I am looking forward to that.
Sally, what is your favourite Georgette Heyer novel? I love the Grand Sophie in particular.

    • Oh, aurian, that’s always such a hard question. I read them so long ago, that they have sort of all blended in my mind. They’ve been re-released over here, though, and I’ve been collecting them, but haven’t had time to re-read them. But I do remember the Grand Sophie! A great story.

  7. Bonjour,
