Interview – Sandy Williams & Giveaway (+traduction)

Welcome to Sandy Williams, the author of the Shadow Reader series. Thanks to her for answering our questions.
**************

———–

Can you present yourself in a few words?

Sure! I’m a reader and writer of kickass romance. I’m best known for my urban fantasy books, The Shadow Reader Novels, but will soon publish a science fiction romance, which will be light on the “science” and heavy on the kickbutt action, adventure, and romance. I’m more than a little excited about it!

You worked as a librarian for a time. What made you decide to go to “the dark side of the force” and to write a novel?

I’ve always been on the dark side of the force. 🙂 I was writing long before I became a librarian. I decided to get my Masters in Library Science – the advanced degree required to become a librarian in the US – because my secondary dream job (writing is definitely THE dream job) was to become an archivist at a presidential library. I volunteered at a presidential library when I was in college, and loved being around so much history. It was awesome! Getting my Library Science degree would have helped me get that job, but I published a book instead. 🙂

Book 3 of The Shadow Reader came out last January (and just came out in France). Can you tell us a little something about this third book?

The second shadow reader book ended with what some people call a cliffhanger. I call it a hiccup, because it was just a teeny tiny obstacle preventing McKenzie from getting her happily-ever-after. The third shadow reader book wraps up the story and settles the conflict in the Realm. McKenzie grows in this book – I loved writing about her little extra abilities – and has to choose the life she wants to live. She also has a few issues to work out with a couple of hot fae men. 😉

I am sure people keep asking you that, but who would you choose: Aren or Kyol?

Kyol. I love him. So much. That’s not to say that I don’t love Aren, because I do, but for me and my personality, I’d go for the honorable, quiet, serious man. I understand why he made the choices he did, and I love him more for them.

I was delighted to read the very beginning of The Shadow Reader from Aren’s Pov on your blog. Will we read more from him in the future?

Yes! I’m working on one now and really, really want to write more. They’re fun, and I love revisiting the Realm and the characters. The only reason I haven’t posted more is because of time. I’m trying to get my current book finished in time for a January release date, so it’s taking up most of my creative energy. But stay tuned! I’ll post the next POV as soon as I can. And if you haven’t read the first one, you can do so here: http://bit.ly/1me6gRs

What do you love most in writing urban fantasy? And why fae, what appeals to you in those creatures?

I’ve always loved fantasy, and I think writing about it in a modern setting makes it more accessible to people who need to be grounded in the real world in some way. Plus, I love being able to walk down the street and think of all the ways paranormal beings can alter our society. It’s fun!

As for why I write about fae, it was mostly an accident. I didn’t choose to write about them; they chose to be the stars of my story. The idea grew from one scene that popped into my head: a girl had to be rescued from the ledge of a building by her worst enemy. The fae were exactly what I needed. One awesome thing about them is that there are so many variations on fae mythology, I could make them into whatever I wanted them to be. I was basically able to create their history and culture completely, and yet readers still understood they were fae and magical.

I have heard that you are currently working on a new book. Science-fiction with a strong romantic subplot? I can’t wait to read it. Can you tell us a bit more about this new project?

I love the book so much it scares me! It’s technically a sci-fi romance, but I like to call it a space urban fantasy. It has all the elements that urban fantasy readers love – a strong female heroine, tons of action, and a super strong, super hot hero – but it puts those characters in a different setting: on spaceships, space stations, and other planets.

This is definitely NOT an official blurb, but here’s a brief summary of the book.

It’s about Lieutenant Ramie Ashdyn, a woman who’s been charged with treason and the murder of her teammates. She’d deny the charges if she could, but an enemy has telepathically rewired her mind, preventing her from declaring her innocence. The only person who might be able to make her talk is the man who trained her to be a killer, Commander Rhys “Rest in Peace” Rykus. He needs the information Ashdyn’s team stole on their last mission, but her behavior, her silence, and the sheer amount of evidence against her raises his suspicions. He’s almost certain he didn’t train a traitor.

And he’s almost certain he didn’t fall in love with one either.

What do you love in this mix of sci-fi and romance?

I can’t read a romance without a strong, high stakes plot. And I can’t read a book with a strong, high stakes plot without it having a romance. Sci-fi romance is the perfect blend. Plus, space is really freaking awesome! Did you watch the movie, GRAVITY? The first ten minutes of that movie, way before the debris rained down hell on Sandra Bullock, took my breath away. It’s amazing what humans have been able to do. And the beauty of Earth and the universe… wow. Just wow. How could I not want to set books in outer space?

Thanks to you (newsletter & blog), I discovered Rachel Bach’s (Paradox Trilogy) and Linnea Sinclair’s (Dock Five Universe) books. Any other books to recommend?

I want to jump up and down and squeal because I’m so happy you found and loved those books! Those are the books that I want to run around and thrust into everyone’s hands. I want the whole world to read them and love them as much as I do.

I’m super, super picky about my sci-fi romance. I like reading about humans falling in love and humans overcoming adversity, so if a book puts too much alien stuff or science stuff in it (science was SO not my subject in school!), the book loses me. I have found a few that I’ve loved, though. GRIMSPACE by Ann Aguirre is phenomenal (and the reason I wrote The Shadow Reader in first person present tense). I also enjoyed Erica Hayes’s DRAGONFLY and Marcella Burnard’s ENEMY WITHIN.

Jack Campbell has a series called The Lost Fleet that is really, really good, too. The reason I know it’s so good is because I loved it and it has practically zero romance. But I remember several scenes where I was literally breathless because I was worried so much about ships blowing up. The series is heavier on the science and military stuff than I usually recommend, but if you’re going to try any science fiction book that doesn’t have romance in it, this is the one. It’s fantastic.

The world is about to end and you have to assemble your perfect apocalypse team with five fictional characters – who would that be?

Woah. That’s a good but difficult-to-answer question! Hmm. Okay. Here goes:

Devi from Rachel Bach’s FORTUNE’S PAWN because she’s freaking awesome and I’d like to have a good girl friend hanging around after the end of the world.

Charley Davidson from Darynda Jones’ FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT because I’ll need a little comedy in my life.

Arcadia Bell from Jenn Bennett’s KINDLING THE MOON because she’s lucky, I’d love to hang out with her, and I’d let her bring Lon along because they are the best couple ever. Plus, she has some really useful knacks.

Mercy Thompson from Patricia Briggs’ MOON CALLED because I’d love to be her friend, and we might need a good mechanic with us.

Ramie Ashdyn from SHADES OF TREASON (my working title)! Yall are going to love her. I do. She’s seriously smart, brave, and kickass.

Yep. Five fictional characters. All women. Girl Power for the win!

Ramie Ashdyn de SHADES OF TRAHISON (mon titre)! Vous allez tous l’aimer. C’est mon cas. Elle est sérieusement intelligente, courageuse, et coriace.

Yep. Cinq personnages fictifs. Toutes des femmes. Girl Power pour la victoire !

But any hope for a normal life is shattered when she’s captured by Aren, the fierce and uncompromising rebel leader. Time is running out, and as the fight starts to claim human lives, McKenzie has no choice but to decide once and for all whom to trust and where she ultimately stands in the face of a cataclysmic civil war.

  1. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh, trop trop trop trop bien !!!

  3. First thing that caught my eye were the covers too. And I love reading about the fae in UF, I agree it’s really interesting to see the various ideas that different authors have when it comes to the approach to writing them. And oh Gravity! Those first ten minutes were indeed breathtaking…but it doesn’t make me want to go to space any time soon, lol.

  4. I love the first book of this series! I need to read the other two but it’s a solid fae-based UF… and I love her apocalypse heroes assembly, I don’t know the others but Arcadia Bell, Mercedes Thompson, and Charley Davidson can make for great heroes.

  5. I’m still not 100 percent sure what a fae is! So out of it. I’m reading about a 7-year-old who accidentally wore polka-dotted panties under her white pants to school, if that tells you where I’m at in my writing and reading journey. I do miss grown-up books sometimes!

  6. The world is about to end and you have to assemble your perfect apocalypse team with five fictional characters – who would that be? YOU ASK THE TOUGH QUESTIONS. For me though? Katniss Everdeen, Rose Hathaway, Celaena Sardothien, Allison Sekemoto and Hermione Granger, badass characters. 😉

  7. WOW ! Encore ?!!
