Nous somme très heureuses aujourd’hui d’avoir Amanda Carlson, la merveilleuse auteure de la série Jessica McClain C’est une fantastique série de fantaisie urbaine, vous pouvez d’ailleurs lire mon avis du premier tome ici. Si vous voulez en savoir plus sur le deuxième tome, revenez le 18 Avril pour lire mon avis. C’était excellent ! N’hésitez donc pas à vous plonger dans le premier roman qui sort chez Le Livre de Poche ce 10 Avril en France. Ou Hot Blooded le deuxième volume qui sort le 24 Avril en anglais. Pouvez-vous vous présenter en quelques mots ?
Mon nom est Amanda Carlson et je suis l’auteure de la série Jessica McClain. Je vis à Minneapolis, MN et j’ai trois enfants. J’ai toujours vécu ma vie ici et j’ai hâte de pouvoir découvrir le reste du monde.
Comment décririez-vous la série Jessica McClain ?
C’est une série d’urban fantasy pleine d’action et d’aventures. Jessica est la seule loup-garou femelle, et à cause de cela tout le monde surnaturel est après elle. Elle partage sa vie avec de nombreux supers personnages et cela la rend intéressante.  
Que peuvent attendre les lecteurs pour les prochains tomes ? *Croise les doigts pour en apprendre plus sur le tome 3 * 
Plus d’action. Dans HOT BLOODED, Jessica voyage pour sauver son homme et découvrir qui elle est et quel genre de pouvoir elle détient. Dans COLD BLOODED, elle approfondit les choses. Elle est tout de suite en fuite. Beaucoup de suspens et de rencontres tandis qu’elle se rend à la Nouvelle-Orléans. Ils ont tous été fun à écrire.
Alors Jessica, d’où vient-elle ?
LOL, de ma tête ! Jessica est tout ce que j’aime dans une héroïne. Elle est intelligente, coriace, forte et insolente. Elle est apparue dans ma tête complètement formée.
Si vous pouviez rencontrer un personnage de vos livres, qui serait-ce et pourquoi ?
Wow. Probablement Jessica. J’adorerais m’assoir et boire une bière avec elle.
Si vous le pouviez, voudriez-vous échanger votre place avec un de vos personnages ?
Pour une nuit avec Rourke ? Mon dieu oui, je voudrais être Jessica !
Comment choisissez-vous les noms de vos personnages ? Est-ce juste des noms que vous aimez, des gens que vous connaissez ou autre ?
La plupart des noms sont juste apparus dans ma tête, prêts à être employés. Ils sont toujours parfaits pour la personne. Je ne sais pas comment ça arrive, mais ils ne correspondent jamais à quelqu’un que je connais.

Pourriez-vous décrire votre journée habituelle ?
Je me réveille et me fais une géante tasse de café. Je m’assois à mon bureau et vérifie mes emails et réseaux sociaux. Ensuite, j’écris ou je modifie, prenant quelques pauses durant la journée – surtout pour vérifier Facebook ou Twitter. Les enfants rentrent à la maison et nous faisons les courses et préparons le diner. Ensuite je fais pratiquement la même chose. J’ai l’habitude d’éteindre mon ordinateur vers minuit et recommencer ainsi le jour suivant.
Quel est votre moment le plus mémorable (bon, mauvais ou autre) que vous ayez-eu en tant qu’auteur ?
Je dirais que c’est « L’appel » pour que me dire que mon livre a été vendu qui a été le meilleur des moments. Mon agent m’a surprise avec un coup de téléphone à l’improviste. C’était fantastique. 

Quand vous vous asseyez et que vous écrivez, savez-vous à l’avance comment l’histoire se finira ou vous laissez-vous guider par le stylo ?
Non, je laisse le stylo me guider. C’est ce que j’aime le plus dans le processus d’écriture. Quand une histoire me surprend, c’est le plus beau des cadeaux. Cela me garde toute excitée.
Quelle a été la scène la plus difficile à écrire?
Je déteste les « entre deux temps », quand les personnages vont d’un endroit à un autre. Ceux-ci sont les plus durs à écrire, car c’est difficile de faire quelque chose de banal quelque chose d’intéressant. 
Comment vous sentez-vous maintenant que vos livres vont sortir en France ?
Je suis SI excitée !!!! J’espère que les Français adoreront les livres. Si je vends bien, je pourrais être capable de venir! C’est un rêve que de venir à Paris et de découvrir la France.

Can you present you in a few words?
My name is Amanda Carlson and I’m the author of the Jessica McClain series. I live in Minneapolis, MN and have three kids. I’ve lived here all my life, but I can’t wait to visit the rest of the world.
How would you describe the Jessica McClain series?
It’s an exciting action and adventure urban fantasy series. Jessica is the only female werewolf, and because of that the supernatural world is after her. She shares her life with a bunch of fun characters and that makes it interesting.

What can readers expect from the upcoming sequels? *fingers crossed to know more about the third novel*
More action. In HOT BLOODED Jessica is on a journey to save her man and discover who she is and what kind of power she can wield. In COLD BLOODED, she jumps back into the thick of things. Immediately she is on the run. Lots of suspense and close encounters as she makes her way down to New Orleans. They were both so much fun to write.
So Jessica, where’d she come from?
LOL, my head! Jessica is everything I love about a heroine. She’s smart, tough, strong and sassy. She popped into my mind already fully formed.
If you could meet any characters in your book, who would it be and why?
Wow. Probably Jessica. I’d love to sit down and have a beer with her.
If you could, would you change places with any of your characters? 
For a night with Rourke? Hell yes, I’d be Jessica!
How do you pick the names of your characters? Are they just names you like, people you know or do they have some other meaning?
Most of the character’s names just pop into my head ready to go. They always fit the person well. I have no idea how that happens, but they are never from anyone I know.

Could you describe your average day and writing practices?
I wake up and pour myself a giant cup of coffee. I sit at my desk and catch up on email and social media. Then I either write or edit, taking little mind breaks during the day—mostly checking in with facebook or twitter. The kids come home and we run errands and cook dinner. Then I do more of the same. I usually close my laptop around midnight and start over the next day.
What is the most memorable moment (good, bad, or other) you have had in your life as an author? 
I’d have to say getting “The Call” that my book had sold was the very best moment I’ve had so far. My agent surprised me with a phone call out of the blue. It was fantastic.
When you sit down and write do you know how the story will end or do you just let the pen take you?
No, I let the pen take me. It’s what I love the most about the writing process. When the story surprises me it’s like the best present ever. It keeps me excited.
What’s the hardest scene for you to write?
I hate the in between time, when the characters are getting from one place to another. Those are the hardest to write, because it’s hard to make something mundane jump off the page.
How do you feel now that your books are soon out in French?
I’m SO excited!!!! I so hope the French audience love the books. If I sell well, I may I’ll be able to come for a visit! It’s a dream of mine to see Paris and the French countryside.

Summer is almost gone and we’re headed into fall. It’s been a great summer for me, but fall is going to be even better! My first book, FULL BLOODED, is going to release into the wild in September. I’m so excited.
To celebrate the change of season, I thought I’d share my Top Ten Favorite Fall Things.
Top Ten Fall Things:

10. Raking leaves. Yep, I love the ritual every year of raking the leaves. I have a big backyard with a big oak tree. We get the entire family out there and rake a big pile and the kids have fun jumping in before we bag it all up.

9. The harvest moon. I love seeing the moon full and bright on a cool fall night. It’s amazing to see, so big and orange in the sky.
8. Baking again. Summers are too hot to do much baking, so when fall rolls around it’s time to make cookies and breads: pumpkin & banana are favorites. I’d love to try a lemon poppy seed one soon. I have to look for a good recipe.
7. Carmel apples! They start selling them at the local stores in October and it’s always a treat to get them. YUM!
6. Wrapping up in a comfy sweater and sitting on the porch. Yes, summer is great, but the best time of the year for me is dusk on the back porch, sipping tea with a sweater wrapped around my shoulders.
5. The smell of fall. There’s something about the dry leaves, mowed grass and cool air that gives fall a delicious scent.
4. Chili!! I love cooking chili in the fall. Once the pot of chili goes on, we all know it’s heading into winter.
3. Boots. I love wearing tall boots over my jeans. Pair that with a cute jacket and you feel like you could rule the world with your swagger.
2. My anniversary. I got married in the fall and every year it’s so much fun to celebrate. Eighteen years this September to an awesome guy. Cheers, honey. Here’s to eighteen more.
1. HALLOWEEN! That’s when all the vamps, witches and wolves get to come out and play. I hope this year is warm enough to go without a coat. I may dress up as a werewolf this year. What will you be?

L’été est presque fini et nous allons bientôt entrer en automne. Ça a été un super été pour moi, mais l’automne sera encore mieux ! Mon premier livre, FULL BLOODED, sort en Septembre. Je suis si excitée.
Pour célébrer ce changement de saison, j’ai pensé partager le Top Ten des choses que j’aime le plus pendant l’automne.
Top Ten :
10. Ratisser les feuilles. Oui, j’adore ce rituel chaque année. J’ai un grand jardin avec un gros chêne. Nous amenons la famille entière et faisons une grosse pile pour que les enfants puissent sauter dedans avant de les mettre dans un sac.
9. La lune des moissons. J’adore regarder la pleine lune lors des nuits d’automne. C’est superbe de la voir si grande, si orange dans le ciel.
8. Se remettre à cuisiner. Il fait trop chaud l’été pour vraiment cuisiner, alors quand l’automne arrive, il est temps de faire des cookies et du pain: citrouilles et bananes sont mes préférés. J’aimerais essayer un au citron et graines de pivot mais je dois trouver une bonne recette. 
7. Des pommes au caramel! Ils commencent à en vendre au marché dès Octobre et c’est toujours une jolie surprise. YUM !
6. M’emmitoufler dans un confortable pull et m’assoir sur le porche. Oui, l’été est bien, mais les meilleurs moments de l’année sont pour moi, le soir sur le porche, buvant du thé avec un pull autour de mes épaules.
5. L’odeur de l’automne. Il y a quelque chose au sujet des feuilles mortes, l’herbe fauchée et l’air frais qui laisse une senteur merveilleuse.
4. Chili!! J’adore cuisiner pendant l’automne. Une fois qu’un pot de chili apparait, on sait que l’on arrive en hiver.
3. Les bottes. J’adore porter des bottes au-dessus de mes jeans. Ajoutons à cela une jolie veste et vous sentez que vous pourriez gouverner le monde avec ce style.
2. Mon anniversaire. Je me suis mariée pendant l’automne et chaque année c’est un plaisir de le célébrer. Dix-huit ans en Septembre avec un homme génial. Santé, chéri. Voilà dix-huit de plus à venir.
1. HALLOWEEN! C’est le moment où vampires, sorcières et loups sortent pour jouer. J’espère que cette année sera assez douce pour y aller sans manteau. Je pourrais peut-être me déguiser en loup-garou cette année. En quoi vous déguiserez-vous ?
Amanda is a graduate of the University of Minnesota, with a BA in both Speech and Hearing Science & Child Development. She went on to get an A.A.S in Sign Language Interpreting and worked as an interpreter until her first child was born. She enjoys playing Scrabble to an unhealthy degree, shopping trips to Ikea and has a great weakness for tropical beaches. She lives in Minneapolis with her husband and three kids.

Interview with Amanda Carlson

Do you know Amanda Carlson and her fabulous Jessica McClain series? If this is not the case, you really need to give it a try, you won’t be disappointed. Blooded is the prequel to the series, and Full Blooded, the first novel in the series will be out on September 1st in the U.S. (click on the links to see our reviews). Both are interesting and after reading one, you can only ask for more! To help you learn more about Amanda Carlson and her books, we have her today on the blog for an interview. Can you introduce yourself in a few words?
Sure! My name is Amanda Carlson, and as well as being an author, I’m a wife and mother of three. I live in Minneapolis, MN, where I was born and raised. My kids are 16, 14 & 12 so writing life is a bit easier now that they can take care of themselves.
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I’ve always been a writer. In high school I used to get out my yearbook, full of pictures of my classmates, and pick out names and faces to be in my stories. Then, in 1998, when we got our first computer, I used to write short stories about my kids and send them to unsuspecting family members. Then I started taking classes and joining local writing groups. My writing evolved from there into what I’m doing now.
How many books do you intend to write for this series?
As many as they’ll let me! I’m hoping for at least six. (Maybe a few spin-offs?)
Was it difficult to write the first book? How long did it take? 
I wrote FULL BLOODED on and off for two years. I didn’t feel it was good enough, so I left it alone for a long time. The next book, HOT BLOODED, took less time. About three months with lots of editing to get it right.
How did you come up with the idea of the novella? 
After I sold the series, my agent and I thought it would be a good idea to showcase my voice, because I was a debut author. I chose a pinnacle moment in my heroine’s life, and it became the prequel to the story. It ended up a very action packed entry for Jessica and the series. I loved writing it!
How do you find your titles? Did you imagine them all when you started the series or do you brainstorm each time?
FULL BLOODED came to me right away, and once I settled on it, the rest came easy. HOT BLOODED and COLD BLOODED were natural choices. I was pleasantly surprised my editor chose to keep them. I think they fit the series nicely.
How did you end up writing Urban Fantasy books? Is there any other genre that appeal to you?
I started out writing romance first, many years ago, but never found my voice there. I got bored with the story, even though I love reading romance. It wasn’t until I jumped into UF world building that I got hooked into urban fantasy. It’s so much fun to write! I may branch out someday and do hot and steamy PNR. That would be fun too.
Does the inspiration for the characters come from people you know?
Nope. The characters are all unique in my mind. But I am pulling from the knowledge in my head, so it’s arguable I could be using inspiration unconsciously. But for me, they are all their own.
Is there a character more difficult than the others to write?
 No. They all come into my head fully formed and ready to go. I love it! I particularly love changing up the voices as I write the story. It’s never boring.
Who is your favorite character in the series?
 Jessica is my favorite, because she started it all. But Rourke is a close second.
Have you already other plans for future series? Or is it top secret?
I have two other series in the works! They are both secret at the moment. I have no idea when and if I will sell those, but I’m hoping to write many more books in the Jessica McClain series as well. I hope to have a long career writing in this genre. That would be a dream.
Can you tell us a little something about the first book? And the second one?
The first book is Jessica’s “coming out” party. We learn about her world and get to experience a lot of “firsts” with her. There’s a ton of action. The second book is exciting because she’s on a journey where she encounters lots of supernatural roadblocks. It’s non-stop action and adventure from start to finish!
Did you need to do a lot of researches for your books?
No, not really. Some of my characters have real names from mythology and history, like Selene the Lunar Goddess from Greek mythology and Eudoxia is the real name of Ivan the Terrible’s daughter. But for the most part the world building is my own.
Do you have a favorite author? Or a favorite book?
My newest favorite author is Amanda Bonilla and her Shaede Assassin series! One of my favorite authors of all time is Georgette Heyer. Whenever I need a pick-me-up I grab one of hers out of my collection.
Where is your favorite place to write?
Most of the time I write in my office. It’s a sunroom attached to my bedroom, with lot of light and happiness. Occasionally I go to a coffee shop or on to my screen in back porch if the weather is nice.
Your books are going to be released in France, do you see yourself meeting your French fans one day?
YES! That would be a dream! If I sell well in France, it would likely be sooner than later, so spread the word. I’ve often dreamt about visiting Paris. It would be wonderful. I also can’t wait for you to read the French version and tell me how close it is to the English version.

Pouvez-vous vous présenter en quelques mots ?
Bien sûr ! Je m’appelle Amanda Carlson, et en plus d’être un auteur, je suis une femme et mère de trois enfants. Je vis à Minneapolis, MN, où je suis née et j’ai grandi. Mes enfants ont 16, 14 et 12 ans alors écrire est devenu un peu plus facile à faire maintenant qu’ils peuvent prendre soin d’eux.
Quand avez-vous réalisé pour la première fois que vous vouliez devenir écrivain ?
J’ai toujours été un écrivain. Au lycée, j’avais l’habitude de sortir mon agenda de l’année, rempli de photos de mes camarades, et choisir des noms et des têtes pour les intégrer dans mes histoires. Puis, en 1988, quand nous avons eu notre premier ordinateur, j’ai pris l’habitude d’écrire de petites histoires sur mes enfants pour les envoyer à quelques membres de la famille. Puis j’ai commencé à prendre des cours et à prendre part au groupe d’écrivains locaux. Mon écriture a évolué en ce que je fais maintenant.
Combien de livres comptez-vous écrire pour la série ?
Autant qu’ils me laissent en faire! J’espère en faire au moins six. (Peut-être quelques spin-offs ?)
A-t-il été difficile d’écrire le premier livre? Combien de temps cela a-t-il pris ?
 
J’ai écrit FULL BLOODED en plusieurs fois pendant deux ans. Je ne pensais pas que c’était assez, alors je l’ai laissé reposer pendant longtemps. Le deuxième livre, HOT BLOODED, a pris moins de temps. A peu près trois mois avec beaucoup de changements pour qu’il soit bon.
 
Comment l’idée d’une nouvelle vous-est-elle venue ?
Après avoir vendu ma série, mon agent et moi avons pensé que ce serait une bonne idée de montrer ma voix, comme je suis un nouvel auteur. J’ai choisi un moment important dans la vie de mon héroïne, et c’est devenu le prequel à mon histoire. J’ai réussi à faire une bonne entrée en matière pour Jessica et la série. J’ai adoré l’écrire.
Comment trouvez-vous vos titres? Les avez-vous tous imaginés quand vous avez commencé la série ou vous prenez-vous la tête à chaque fois ?
FULL BLOODED m’est venu tout de suite, et une fois choisi, le reste est venu facilement. HOT BLOODED et COLD BLOODED sont été des choix logiques. J’étais agréablement surprise que mon éditeur les garde. Je pense qu’ils conviennent parfaitement à la série.
Comment en êtes-vous venue à écrire de l’Urban Fantasy ? Y-a-t-il un autre genre qui vous attire ?
J’ai d’abord commencé à écrire de la romance, il y a plusieurs années, mais je n’ai jamais réussi à trouver ma voie là-dedans. Je m’ennuyais avec l’histoire, même si j’adore lire de la romance. Le jour où j’ai découvert le monde de l’UF, j’ai été tout de suite emballée par l’urban fantasy. C’est si drôle à écrire !  Je peux toujours faire des ramifications et faire une romance paranormale hot et sensuelle. Ca pourrait être sympa aussi. 
Vos personnages sont-ils inspirés des personnes que vous connaissez ?
Non. Les personnages sont tous unique dans mon esprit. Mais comme ils viennent de ma tête, on pourrait se demander si je m’inspire inconsciemment. Mais pour moi, ils sont chacun eux même.
Y-a-t-il un personnage plus difficile à écrire qu’un autre ?
Non. Ils sont tous venus dans mon esprit formés et prêt à partir. J’aime beaucoup. J’aime particulièrement changer de voix quand j’écris l’histoire. Ce n’est jamais ennuyant. 
Quel est votre personnage préféré dans la série ?
 
Jessica est ma préférée, car elle a tout initié. Mais Rourke est proche derrière elle. 
Avez-vous déjà d’autres projets pour une future série? Ou est-ce top secret ?
J’ai deux séries en travail! Elles sont toutes les deux secrètes pour le moment. Je ne sais pas si je les vendrais, mais j’espère écrire pleins d’autres livres dans la série Jessica McClain aussi. J’espère avoir une longue carrière dans ce genre. Ce serait un joli rêve.
Pouvez-vous nous dire un petit quelque chose sur le premier livre ? Et le deuxième ?
Le premier livre présente le “coming out” de Jessica. On apprend à connaitre son monde et à assister à toutes ses « premières fois ». Il y a énormément d’action. Le deuxième tome est excitant comme c’est un voyage où elle rencontre de nombreux obstacles surnaturels. Il y a de l’action et de l’aventure non-stop du début à la fin.
Avez-vous eu besoin de faire beaucoup de recherches pour vos livres ?
Non, pas vraiment. Certains de mes personnages ont de vrais noms issus de la mythologie et de l’histoire, comme Selene la Déesse de la Lune de la mythologie grecque et Eudoxia est le véritable nom de la fille d’Ivan le Terrible. Mais la plus grande partie de mon monde vient de moi.
Avez-vous un auteur préféré ? Ou un livre ?
Mon nouvel auteur préféré est Amanda Bonilla et sa série Shaede Assassin. Un des mes auteurs préférés depuis toujours est Georgette Heyer. Si j’ai besoin de lire quelque chose qui me plaira à coup sûr, je prends un de ses livres de ma collection.
Quel est votre endroit préféré pour écrire ?
La plupart du temps j’écris dans mon bureau. C’est une pièce ensoleillée rattachée à ma chambre, avec plein de lumière et de bonheur. Occasionnellement je vais dans un café ou sur le porche si le temps est agréable.
Vos livres vont sortir en France, vous voyez-vous rencontrer vos fans Français un jour ?
OUI! C’est mon rêve! Si je vends bien en France, ça pourrait se faire vite, alors partagez l’info. J’ai souvent rêvé de visiter paris. Ca serait merveilleux. J’ai aussi vraiment hâte que vous puissiez lire la version Française pour me dire si elle est proche de l’Anglaise.

Jessica McClain, Novella

Synopsis: Jessica McClain was born the only female in an all male race. The only problem is-she’s no wolf. Called a curse, a witch and the Daughter of Evil by the superstitious wolves, Jessica decides to fight for her freedom, at age nineteen, the only way she can-in the ring.

When she’s brutally attacked right after her fight, is it enough to finally earn her freedom off Compound, or will she be forced to endure the hatred even longer . . .

review: I saw a lot of wonderful reviews about this novella and I have to say I was therefore more than curious to discover by myself how it was. So when I had the occasion to get into it, I was very happy to discover this new series. And WOW! I think it’s always difficult to write some short stories like that, we’re anxious to have a little too fast story, that we couldn’t have all the important points, etc. Well I can tell you this novella is amazing! It’s been a long time since I didn’t get into a story I was very curious to learn more about.
I think you know that, the read was really fast but it allows us to discover Jessica, a young woman despised by her whole pack, as many of them want to kill her, even if it means death in return. Everything is settled in this book and we can understand how it is for our heroin to live like that, her feeling of injustice, her will to leave this world and to start a new life. Some other characters are introduced to us like her father or even her brother and I’m so curious to learn more about them now. It’s the same for Nick, the friend of Jessica.
This short story is a nice introduction to a story that looks more than interesting. I confess I can’t wait to read the first book to learn more about everything. In those few pages, we can discover a light and fluid writing style with a great topic. Well I think you know now I really want to read more.
